I was going for the full 360 and came up short. What did I do wrong?

(Vid is a little better quality if you click this link and select HQ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmDu32Ux1bQ&feature=channel_page )

I was just trying to get a nice drift going, but once it was too far gone, I figured what the hell and floored it.

I'm thinking if I scrubbed off less speed and didn't countersteer, it would have kept spinning?

I just watched it about 20 times. It's hard to tell from the vid since I can't tell how you were applying the throttle. While the turn in was agressive (that's fine), it looked like you tried to turn sharper that was necessary which may have initiated the drift. There was some track on driver's left that could have been used. Flooring it made it worse (but you already know that). Letting the wheel spin back to neutral was Ok and you really didn't have a chance to countersteer by that time (happened too fast).

Seems to me there was just too much steering input. Possibily feathering the throttle would have brought you out of it (Possibly). It would have scrubbed off speed.

This is a very good example of what can happen when you "Ride the traction circle" and just get a little ahead of it. We teach the traction circle in our classes.

" You're not going fast enough until you've spun a few times"

BTW, very good hand position. I notice you're taking care of your thumbs.

I think that's what happens when you try to drive a vette like a Miata.

Try to do one of these.

Bill, the only traction circle I was going for was rubber donuts on the asphalt.

I managed to get a few decent drifts on the last session, basically just throwing the car around on purpose to practice car control. I know, not the time or place to be screwing around like that... I got the point after the smoke cleared and there were 3 cars closing in on me.

This is better: I think the tires are angry though.

Yea, the cars closing on you is what's scary. I have had a couple of busted up racecars because the "closers" weren't looking far enough ahead.
Drifting & autocross are kinda the same in that: Where the hell do you practice?

Yea, a bit of a push but good correction.

Pos some more vids.

Tires angry at Willow? Crap, that's normal. Willow's really fun in August, the tires start to melt before you even take a lap.

You're going fast enough that it's probably time to start recording temps & pressures.

Actually at Willow springs they rent out a skidpad for $40 where the cars go out one at a time and screw around to their heart's content, but I'm not ready to subject my $220 tires to that.

I haven't been to Willow in a long time but I did spend all day yesterday on a skid pad with teenage drivers. Glad it wasn't my tires.

Canon sd850is. Its a point-and-shoot but can record 30 min vids at 640x480 at 30fps onto a sd card. Most other cameras have decent video too but don't let you record vid clips that long. I figured I need a digital camera anyways, so this satisfies both needs and is better quality than the digital8mm cameras.

Canon also has a vid camera out now that does HD vid on sd cards for $500.

That's pretty impressive for a point & shoot.

Some of my students have been using the MotorSports Hero camera. I'm not sure I like the 170 dgree lense but the price is great - $199.99

From what it looks like as Bill mentioned sharp steering input + throttle = spin. It is hard to tell though.

You caught right up to him in that corner!

The compression and the camera mount don't do it justice.

I found it's tough to get good vid inside the car because the contrast is so huge with the dark interior vs. outside.

There's also a Panasonic camera that does 848x480, but I read that it was just doing 848x240 and using line-doubling for the in between pixels.

We'll have to start a camera thread in the race section, I had one at CF awhile back. Knowing what features you need for that is about the last thing the Circuit City clowns could help you with.

I uploaded a sample vid, this is about as good as I can do on youtube at least, if you click the HQ button.

I had a better upload site before but they shut it down.

At work we've gone round and round for years with in car cameras. Our current setup is from "Chase Cam". Marketing seems to be happy with them at this point:

Here is some in car shot with the cameras:

It all depends on the day. Cloudy days aren't a problem, but sometimes the sun is just blinding. I can't read the stupid digital guages with my own eyes, so the camera wouldn't read them anyways, unless it was at night or something.

We just got that software - takes the datalog from the Motec ECU for a given run and displays real time tach, throttle position, gear selection, and I believe MPH.

I'll see if any of the vid's are on the net somewhere...

Here's another cool in car - three alternating camera angels, topo map, MPH, You have to listen through the interview at the beginning but it's worth the wait.

Just ticked past 100K. But I really don't want to know how bad the bearings and rings look! The magnetic drain plug always comes out with metallic bits on it.

It has a stock engine minus some plenum porting and a carsound cat and no mufflers. All the other cars out there sounded like weedwackers.

I'm going for broke. I still need to get that full video edited...
