What would be a good system or type extinguisher for your C4?

Unfortunately, I am not well prepared enough and do not carry one, even though I should. If (when?) I do it will be a basic dry chemical fire extinguisher because that can be used on basically anything burning including oil/gas/electrical. No need to get fancy, IMHO. That is what I have hanging on the wall next to the car and tool area, though, so at least I thought that far ahead.

Matthew

Edit - sorry, didn't know you wanted one for racing, just thought for general street driving.

Steve, a system or just a handheld?

I've had mine attached to my harness bar.

A better way of doing it is a mount that attaches to the passenger seat mounts.

A full system is even better.
Properly installed, it shouldn't interfere with anything.

I agree on the full system especiallyif you're going to do track days. It's very rare bt I've seen one car burn up with a extinguisher mounted on the pass seat, the guy went into a tire wall on the pass side, jumped out because of flames in the cockpit and couldn't reach thru to get at the extinguisher.

A full system with a 10lb bottle only runs about $400.

Steve, there are several options here, and like anything, it's all in how much you want to spend.

For a car like yours with an interior, you'll want a halon gas extinguisher (or system). They're probably $80 or so, depending on size. The advantage is that you can put out a fire without destroying your interior or engine compartment with chemicals or powder.

A cheap-o ABC extinguisher is also useful, but has the side effect of damaging whatever you spray it on. Of course, if the fire's bad enough it doesn't matter, but most fires are small oil or other fluid spills that can be put out before real damage is done. On LT1 cars, the power steering reservoirs used to catch on fire...

Of course a full system is ideal, probably a 10 pound bottle. You usually run one nozzle into the cockpit and one into the engine compartment. A smaller, 5 lb bottle is ok but will only have enough to save your skin, not the car's. They run about $500.

The ones mounted to the passenger seat are a joke. You have to unbuckle yourself and then start reaching over the console to the UNSTRAP THE EXTINGUISHER, and then be prepared to use it. Most people do not have the thought process to handle that, and at certain times it can be unsafe. Same goes for mounting it on the harness bar behind you.

Having a dedicated system with a push/pull switch on the dash is the easiest and quickest to operate.

Yep, $479 = damn cheap insurance.

And with a pull cable, a corner worker can do it for you.

"Most people do not have the thought process to handle that", yep, ever see a guy grap the extinguisher & throw the hood up? Boom....

I sell both a mount that mounts to the front of the seat and the Amerex Halon (or Halotron) fire extinguisher that mounts to it with an all steel quick release. The mount is $75 and the Halon is about $175. On my C4, I had a P/S hose blow at Loudon and because I had the Halon (which is a colorless, oderless, zero residue gas) I put the fire out and limited the damage to the hose and 4 plug wires. I now carry one in My C6Z and truck as well.

I have 2 of those fire extinguisher cans I bought from Lowe's for like $20 each. They are about the size of a can of tire foam. One is behind the driver's seat and 1 behind the passenger seat. If needed I can reach them while still in the driver's seat, or can get it pretty quickly if I'm working under the hood and start a blaze. They aren't strapped in though so probably not legal for racing.

Yep, they have to be positively retained for racing.

They're a good idea for the street though.

Any vehicle on the track should have a mounted system. As stated above Halon is the best. CO2 is good but if you are in a enclosed confind area it can cause a person to suffocate, CO2 can displace the oxygen in the lungs.

I think track workers are great people and desirve our thanks. Unforunately they can still panic in an emergancy and not handle an extinguisher properly. Fire can really freak someone out.

On the street a mounted hand extinguisher is always good to have. It should be within easy reach of the driver when he is belted in. Again I would choose Halon for the reasons stated above.

Good luck,

I believe you haven't been around good corner workers if you feel this way. We have the best in the business out here, at least in SCCA.

You are right.

I'm sorry if you think I was being disrespectful of anyone.

I did not mean to imply that all or even many would panic. Fire is a very scarry thing and no one knows how they will react until they have delt with a fire, and every fire is different. I have been in fires of severl types and I know from experience that even a trained professional can panic in a fire.

With that said I was simply emphasizing that an onboard system is essential in a race car.

I totally agree. I've been on fire in a racecar and I mildly paniced but experievce came in, I was out and hit the bottle in 10-15 seconds. That came from practice, getting out of the car quickly.

When I'm working with guys that race, I always make them do a couple of quick exits.

And I'll again say, $479 for a syetem is cheap insurance.
