Ran a new best in my 00 GTP today. The car is bone stock, the only changes from last time was that I took out all the misc. crap (jack, spare, loose stuff, etc...), aired the fronts down to 25 PSI, aired the rears up 45 PSI, and took out the drivers side head light. My old best was a 14.5 @ 94.

First pass:

2.085
9.193 @ 76.06
14.334 @ 95.71

Backed it up with a:

2.104
9.204 @ 76.16
14.343 @ 96.14

Good times. You'll surprise a few crossfires with that

Does the headlight opening give fresh air to the intake?

And why do you air down the front tires? I'm taking mine to the track in May for the first time and have no clue what to do.

The stock air box opening is right behind the DS headlight, so I thought pulling the headlight out might speed the car up a little. I don't really know if it made a difference.

The car is front wheel drive. If you air the tires down a little, the contact patch gets larger and you theoretically have a bit more traction. If you air the tire down too far, it will start to cup in towards the center, which lessens the size of the contact patch, and works against you. It's kind of a balance when it comes to street tires and PSI.

Pumping up the rear tires to a higher pressure makes them roll easier. They will be harder, and maybe even bow out slightly in the center which puts less rubber on the road which equals less rolling resistance.

You aren't going to break any records your first time out, so take it easy. Make your first pass at 80% or so, give yourself a chance to get familiar with the tree, the finish line, return road, etc...

OK now this makes sense. The whole time I was thinking that you should have reversed your operation but didn't realize the Pontiac was front wheel drive.

14.3? You'll surprise and beat plenty of L98s with that.

Yeah man, I was pretty pleased with it. I think I can get into the 13's with just some minor stuff.

You can put mine on that list, even if parts don't fall off...

...that's a pretty good time for a 6th generation Grand Prix.

Some of the credit should go to Capitol Dragway in MD. The track had teeth this last weekend, the bite was incredible. Anyone who has ever tried to launch a GTP knows that overwhelming the front tires is a piece of cake, even with a stock car. I could very nearly wood the car right from the line, which is pretty rare for these cars.

I think if I could have made some more passes, I might have been able to go mid 1.9's with it.
