My boss told me I can have his son's Mitsubishi GT3000 for free if I come get it. It has a new Jasper Engine with less than 15k miles on it, but the transmission is toast.

I know little about the car except he says its in good condition, just not driven for the past year. It has been sitting in front of his house and he wants it gone.

It has an automatic transmission but I'm not sure of much else about it yet.

You think it might be worth repairing and selling or should I just get it and sell it as is? Or just pass on the whole idea?

Since it's your boss, only you know if it would be kosher to take it, and turn around and sell it.

I don't know much about the 3000GT, but I always thought they were nice looking cars. I'd look at it, and if it was in good shape, I'd put a new transmission in it and have fun.

A friend had a 3000GT VR4 - cool car, cost a friggin' fortune to maintain.

I already flat out told him that if I took it, I would be re-selling. He had no problem with that. He is just sick of the car sitting and doesn't have the time or inclination to do anything with it except have someone come pick it up and haul it away.

They have a certain curb appeal. The price is right. Why don't you call a tranny shop and pose the rebuild question? See what they guestimate. That ought to tell you if it's a play or pass.

The big hang up is if it's the base 3000GT or the VR4. VR4 has more appeal as it has more power and AWD.

Do a search on ebay to find out what a trans might cost and go from there.

Also check and see what a comparable car sells for to see if it is worth doing.

Base Model - No AWD

I'm startin' to think like Pappy. Just bring the car home, clean it real nice and advertise it as is.... It has the papers that came with the Jasper motor, I could use that money to build a hot transmission for my C4

if there is anything else wrong, many parts on the early cars are now unobtainium... good luck with that.

Engine controllers? Forget it... the transmissions are garbage, regardless of style or year.

I guess this is a no-brainer. Thanks for bringing me to my senses. I'll let him keep it for a door stop.

Thanks for the insight

Probably a good idea.

I had a freebee, a friend asked to park his crappy motorhome, 72 Dodge, at my house for a month.

A month turned into a year and a half. I told him to get it out a here. He said he had to go out of town on a 6 month job and gave me the title.
Put it in the paper for $500, 3 months later only one offer from a very poor lady, offered $300. But the thing had to be towed to her place and she couldn't afford the tow.

SO, I said I'll pay the tow cause I wanted this junker off my property. The tow truck hooks up and we find that the idiot owner had pulled the emergency brake and it was locked up. Tow guy says give me $100, see ya later.

I spend a full day, pulling the rusted axles out to get the brake drums off.
Get the tow guy back, another $100.

So after the newspaper adds, tow, etc. I got paid $80 to spend 8 hours working on a piece of junk that I got for FREE.

I imagine if someone really wanted this car to repair and make good, it might turn out to be a good deal for the right person, but I just wanted something that was quick and easy to flip, but I don't think it will be so easy to flip and make much money.

It might be a good car for a teenager to work on, but it's pointless for you. The car is worth maybe $2k in running condition. Plus, for the rest of your life, your boss will be hounding you about it. Tell him to throw it in autotrader with a description and take $500 for it.

You should be able to easily get at least $500 for it as it sits. Why not take the easy money?

That's a thought, but I have to decide if its really worth $500 or even $1000 for the aggravation. Towing, Clean up and dealing with dumb-buts who come to see the car.
