My car came with a new rear hatch w/s and I finally got around to installing it. The name of the supplier on the bag is The Last Detail - Corvette Parts and Accesories. Pt. #692712 . I printed off some Willcox instructions. The top section (E to F) is supposed to be 66" but this one seemed to be an inch longer (hard to measure accurately). So I start putting this thing on thinking I'm going to hafta stretch it in the corners like Willcox says but it's too long. The bottom section is not too bad, I can work in the extra but the top section has too much, it wants to pop off. Has this happened to anyone? It looks like I'm going to have to cut it, probably in the center at the top to get it to fit. The welting also doesn't hold very well. I read some peolple have to use a rubber mallet to drive it on. This one went on really easy.

Maybe it would help to refrigerate it or soak in a bucket of cold water before installing to shrink it a little?
As far as it not holding, I know there's some kind of sticky goo on mine. |

I wonder where I can get that sticky goo or what it's called? It's sticky but doesn't go hard.

3m weather strip adhesive is like a contact cement isn't it? Good for holding the rubber to the body portion but I want something to help hold the u'shaped welting part on that's not tight enough.Quote:

That sucks. I have zero tolerance for stuff that doesn't fit. If it doesn't fit your car, it probably doesn't fit any of the customers they've sold to either.
I guess expecting anything out of TLD wouldn't go far either since you didn't buy it, and since anything they could even exchange it with would be the same length. Is this U shape part the piece with teeth that is supposed to hold onto the body flange? Why wouldn't glue work there? |

Yep, works well when applied right, apply a lite coar to the W/S ad to the body, let it skin over, apply a very lite coat to either and put together. Note, a lot of it in stores is yellow, but they make it in black, hides better. Use blue masking to hold it down ovenite. |

Yes, the u-shaped part with the teeth. The 3m w/s glue I have on hand works like contact cement. Put it on each 1/2 and when tacky push both parts together. I just assumed it wouldn't be best for the u-shaped stuff that has to be slid on. I'll look for something that sets up over time and tape it in place.

I have been using "Dynatex Super Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive, flexible adhesive, bonds rubber weatherstripping to doors, windshields, trunk lids, windows and lights. #49429." It is black, gooey, stretchy, and sticky, solvent based. I am very happy with it's adhesive qualities. It's probably similar to the 3M stuff. Yes both surfaces are coated, but is not a contact cement in the strict sense of the meaning. It does not bond instantly with no wiggle room. The piece can be moved, slid, and adjusted to its final position.

Maybe you are better off it being too long. I am not looking forward to the day mine needs replacing.

Well I couldn't find the dynatex stuff locally so I used some Permatex stuff I had on hand. I took a few days and did the top section in sections, taping it until dry. Started at the top center. After that dried I did the rest down to the corners and taped it overnight. I was able to get it on without cutting it shorter. At least I don't have to worry if it shrinks. I didn't glue any of the lower portion but if it starts coming off I can do that later. It appears to be a good quality piece except for the u-shaped welting not having enough holding power. I coated it all with some Sil-glide spark plug boot lubricant.
