Just watched it. I was 19 in '68. There were a lot of us.
Cicero had factories that made everything from T.V. picture tubes to 12' diameter gears so there were plenty of decent paying jobs for a guy if he didn't go to college or get drafted.
If your old man agreed, you could go down to a dealer on Ogden ave. (rt.66) and buy a GTX, GTO, GTA or maybe just a Nova 307 4 speed brand new.
Dorsal Blanton had a 440, 4:11, pistol gripped 4 speed that would put your head on the rear parcel shelf when he hit 2nd. gear on a side street.
It was a 1/4 mi. from the stoplight on Ogden and Kostner to the Cicero Ave. bridge where guys would race at night.
But that was then.

Well, I didn't have someone to buy me stuff then so, I had to go used. 60 Impala, 348, 3 duces, factory 4 speed.

Nice. I'm picturing red w/red and white interior.
What I meant by "if your old man agreed", well if you were single you were probably living at home and your parents still had some say-so about what you spent your money on.
If you were married you probably weren't driving a muscle car.
I had a '62 Imp. convert, 283 powerglide. Paid $450.

I paid $600.
It was blue & white. Had a 60 T-Bird hood scoop welded on with the front open. The interior was rolled & pleted blue & white. Tach & gauges.

Blew it up on the strip and put a 409 in it.

The stock shifter was about 5 feet long and went under the seat.

Hell of a car for a senior in high school.

I also had a bike - 305 Honda Scrambler.

I remember drooling over those Hondas.
Gorgeous little bike.
Parental guidance (probably a good thing) interfered with that. Rumor was this senior with a '58 Imp. with a 409 could pull wheelies, but I think it was just that,a rumor.

When I was 19, I had a Toyota Celica GT Coupe. Yee-ha.

At least it was better than my prior car - a 1976 AMC Pacer... yuck-o-rama.

1968... I was 8 years old and shifting my dad Malibu SS while he pushed in the clutch. Ten years later I was driving a red Camaro Z28 and getting in trouble with law on a weekly basis until my dad and the cops took my car away for almost the whole summer on 1979. That taught me a thing or two about speeding and racing on the street.

That's why I quit spending money on horsepower for the street.

I watched that show, there was some mis-information and downright wrong statements made in the process. It was pretty interesting though.

When I was a senior I had a 64 Polara 500, a really nice car. 383 Magnum 727 and 3.23 gears. Wasn't hot at all compared to most of my friends. One had an LS6 Chevelle, another a Hemi GTX, another a 67 L71 Corvette, 440 Road Runners, GTO's, 383 Baracuda.

I know just how you feel Tom. I had a 66 T-Bird Landau and my friends were driving GTO's. I was going to buy a 68 440 RT 6-pack for $850 but my Mom made me buy my T-Bird back from a friend of hers that restored it. (rigin friggein sasaphras mo-deckin sumple bumkin)

That is so amazing since that is what I also drove for my senior year. They were good looking cars and I have always looked for one. I think mine had a two barrel on it. My next car was a 65 Vette 2 top Roadster. I will post some pictures of them soon.

My next car was my 64 Coupe! Looks like we had very parallel lifes. Mine was a 4bbl model black buckets, floor shift, PS, PB, Factory AM/FM w/Factory reverb, Factory vinyl top, factory Magnesium 500 wheels. It was a Factory Executive car and my moms cousin was the first official owner, which is who I bought it from.

Not really. When my mother said to me "You're going to college, right?", I said sure but I'm working a year in between HS & college so I can buy a Corvette first.

She wasn't real happy but she got over it.

Gave $1800 for mine....I saved for a while to get it and still had to borrow $600 to buy it. My folks weren't too happy either, but like Bill's, they got over it. Wish I had mine back.

Ran across mine about 15 years after I sold it. They had painted it maroon with the torch red interior....it didn't look too good. Silver with the red was much better.
