Been fooling around with them for years. We built my setup soon after we bought our house and had the room for it. It isn't as big as that one in the link, but we have fun nonetheless.

The outside is a 2-lane high-banked oval 1:32 scale track. Its digital, which means we can run 4 cars at one time, and I've got 3 lane-change sections. Since these pics, I've added a pit road and catch fence.
The infield is a 4-lane HO scale track. Each lane has a dedicated power supply with multiple leads. I also installed toggle switches to control polarity (lane direction).

I love those things. Brings back a bunch of memories.

Speaking of little cars....check out what is going on in the parking lot at Rockingham tomorrow. These cars go 132 feet in 2 seconds and run 115 mph. To cool!!!

This was an article on The Rocks Website today.

ALSO THIS WEEKEND IN THE PARKING LOT
The IMDRA

Billy Weeks took a wrong turn after his college classes and stumbled across a model car drag racing competition in a parking lot. He got hooked.
“I have been involved with it for more than 20 years,” said Weeks. “I have three or four cars.”
This weekend the International Model Dragway Racing Association (IMDRA) will hold the fifth annual eastern nationals at Rockingham Dragway.
“We have been averaging about 100 racers,” said Weeks, a Richmond County resident. “The cars run off nitromethane or rechargeable batteries.”
Owners of radio controlled racers from California, New York, Florida and New Jersey will travel to Richmond County for this weekend’s competition. The cars ravel down a 132-foot strip in less than two seconds. They race 12 categories with cars that go as fast 115 mph.

Weeks explained that any league that is organized for road cars is also available to the model cars. The equipment made for the model car races is also very similar to the stock car races.
The president of the IMDRA, Ron Hicks, began by racing full-sized stock cars and stopped when he got married.
“I wanted to get involved in something else so I found this and it is just as exciting,” Hicks said.
“There will be people here who put anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000 in their cars and who bring 15 cars,” said Weeks.
Many of the cars are made out of carbon fiber and T1 aluminum, which Weeks said is the same aluminum used on space shuttles.
Weeks will not be racing this weekend, but is helping the IMDRA organize the event. He really looks forward to each of the races.
“I enjoy just having fun and working on the cars,” Weeks said.

Each of the five years the race has been held in Rockingham the racers have set new records.
“There are going to be a lot of contestants from all over the country and it is going to be a lot of fun,” said Hicks.
The track is open Friday for testing. It is $50 to enter a car in the first race and $25 for each additional race. Spectators get in for free.
Qualifying begins at noon on Saturday and eliminations begin Sunday at 11 a.m. Attendance is free and is located in the front parking area outside the track.

Don't they just fly off the track if you go too fast? Or do they lose power and slow down?

I guess I'm not sure how the racing goes... I mean you're not changing lanes, so the skill has to be in throttle control right?

Yep. But I haven't run one since I was 12.
At one time, they had something called magna-track which helped hold them down, didn't last long.

yea the skill is in the throttle control.. keeping it on the track and going as fast as possible is pretty much the goal... also I think car setup comes into play as well but I'm not that adavanced into it.. there are an infinite amount of tire options.. and people use weights ect.. and there are rules for each class ect..

Its getting big around here again too. They opened a store in one of the local strip malls dedicated to slots, RC cars and the like. It has a huge track (like ten lanes or so) that you can rent cars or bring your own. I was getting into it and then my wife said... "C'mon little boy lets go home now"

My first big slot track experience was in Hampton Beach New Hampshire in the late 60's. On the main drag was a pizza joint with an 8 Ball pin ball machine, a head shop complete with black light posters, LP's, incense, etc, a concert hall and a few other tourist shops. Hangin on the strip across from the beach. Oh ya!

It's alot of fun, it can get expensive but not nearly as bad as R/C cars.. I'm selling my slots and a few of my R/C cars.. the wife says I have too many toys/hobbies so I am going to condense the herd, and am thinking of buying a Clob Buster and a Clodzilla kit maybe not sure.. (it's a bad ass Monster Truck)

Yep! it's easy to do... my RC10GT (1/10scale nitro truck) has almost every mod availble on it.. I probably have well over $700 in it.. but it's not worth nearly that now.. but I've owned it probably for over 15 years... its also on e-bay now..

I am having a hard time imagining how you can get 5K in something that small. 1500 maybe. Unbelievable! If I spent 5K on my vette I could get in the low 12's I'm thinking. Maybe less.

Easy, get an F1 r/c car that works like the real one. Titainum suspension parts. This think even had adjustable shocks. It was gas powered too, BTW.

Of course the shocks on this guy's real race car cost $1,500 each.

Excessive, and he's probably exaggerating a bit, but I can believe it.

I have a few that cost $200 off the shelf, yet I've probably have spent a few grand in all on them by now. I really don't want to count it.

But the beer is always free because this is my backyard:

If one was thinking of buying and setting up a slot car track in their basement, how long a track is minimal? 25' 50' 75'

I see track packages anywhere from $500 to $1700 and higher

The easy answer is ... as much as you can afford.

What scale are you considering? HO, 1:32, 1:24?

My table is about 4' by 13'.
The 1:32 oval is roughly 25ft in track length, and that isn't much. If I were going to set up a road course, I don't think I would consider anything less than about 40ft.
The HO course is also roughly 25ft, and I would consider it average size for a 4-lane home setup. If I were doing a 2-lane, I would certainly go longer.

Slot cars and competition tracks bring back a lot of memories of high school. Our little HO cars had reeds that drove a drive sprocket. We found out real quick we could rewire the windings and make the little things fly. When we accelerated the other cars slowed up. The problem was the heat generated would cause the body to melt right their on the track. Not Cool. Sugar Plum Race Way bragged they had the biggest track in the state. Four lane, high bank and lots of dog legs. Track was more than 300 ft long and drivers had to set up on a raised deck to see the whole track. I melted 2 cars and was asked not to come back. Thats ok, In the parking lots of the race track were a lot of Ponitac LeMans with OHC6 and Mustangs with 6 cylinders, I guess their need for speed was in an HO car.
