Guy that used to work for me has a 73 coupe, 454 auto with A/C 72K on the odometer, mint interior, but needs a paint job. He bought this car new and has taken great care of it, always garaged. Anyway he wants to sell and offered it to me for 5K. Should I buy it or pass ?

Let me see? Big Block... Last year for chrome rear bumper. Yup! I'd buy it if I had the dough! It will go up in value. Just a matter of time.

Consider the cost to get it where you'd like it. For under $10k you could have a pretty nice early C3 if it doesn't need a bunch of suspension, brake, and drive train repairs.

Check the frame and undercarriage. Rust and corrosion could be a deal breaker. The birdcage is another area of concern. As with any purchase you should do all your inspections before you pull the trigger. Sounds like it may be a keeper. Good luck.

Rust is a C3 killer, check those areas carefully. If it truly has always been garaged, it should be fine.

If that checks out, it sounds like a great deal!

First question is:

Do you want it?

That's the most important thing. Buying a car (especially one that can cost a ton of $$$ in the long run) that you don't want is pointless.

Unfortunately, without knowing the actual condition of the frame and other components, it's hard to say the actual value. Although $5k does sound like a good deal for a big block (with one chrome bumper, at least).

I'd say get it checked out by someone skilled in C3s and know the weak points. They can give you a valid estimate of repairs and that can help you decide.

I love 73 Big blocks! If it checks out I don't think you can go wrong for 5K.

If the rust isn't a problem, for $5k, it's an absolute steel.

If nothing else, you can paint it for $4k, another $1k to fluff and puff it, and then unass it for $20k or so.

Or, you have one helluva cool ride for $10k!!!

Buy it. If it's that great of a deal it won't be hard to get out of later.

Order a case of primer rattle cans and take it to the strip.
