My motor mount heat wrapping is trashed! Worn away, torn away, sopped with oil and grease. Have any of you replaced the foil heat wrap successfully and where can you buy that. Is it a replaceable GM part?

The parts fiche does not show the wrap as being a separate part.
I know you can make one with a heavy duty stapler and some exhaust wrap... I have a spare set, but they are going in soon... I suspect that by 175k miles, the OE ones are about done. |

Just get the DEI starter shield from Summit, cut in half amd you'll have enough for both mounts. It has more insulation than exhaust wrap.
They also have metal ty-raps but, I don't know id they are long enough. |

yea... the mount itself. I have no idea what its lifespan is, but 175k seems reasonable!

I got my material on e-bay, but the Summit stuff would be fine, I'm sure. I didn't replace the mounts themselves, but I'd have to believe they're available somewhere.

I remember reading about using the motor mounts off a mid 90s truck - something about them being solid and not allowing the motor to torque as much....can't remember if it was for l98s or lt1s, I'll look into it later.

While we're on the topic, those of you with original mounts on your LT1 need to inspect them. I replaced mine last summer while doing a bunch of other work.
Had suspected sagging for years, and not only were they both saggy but one was split. |

When I get back to Pearl, I will do a heat test to see how hot the engine mounts get. I have headers, so I think the temp goes down, as the cast irons retained lots of heat/

Steve,
Headers let out a ton of heat, tho... the cast iron may hold it, and that may mean the mounts don't get as soaked. |

Are your headers wrapped or ceramic coated. Since they are a primary source of under hood heat, it seems as if taking care of the source would drastically reduce the need for motor mount heat wrap. Just a thought.

Here is a good shot of how close the headers are to the motor mount. And I dont have these, the plates protecting the knock sensors. This must be a 94-96 vette.

Temps with AC on after running down the highway, oil temps 220, coolant 205. 210 was the highest temp it showed with my thermotec laser temp gun. I then revved it up for a minute straight at 2200-2500rpm, and it was 210 again. That was the hottest temp from above and at the point where the headers were the closest to the motor mount.

I got a slight problem getting the car out right now, snowplow put a bearm at the end of the drive and it's frozen, would bottom out the car. It might melt in the next 2 days.

No worries. I was looking at the headers and they come real close to the bushings on the upper control arm on the passenger side. I wrapped that a long time ago to keep the one closest to the passenger away from the header heat after doing poly bushings. Also, I wrapped the brake booster, as I remember Guldstrand kept cracking them , as I have too, after the #7 header tube is real close to the booster. I remember it being around 200 degrees difference due to the barrier I put on the booster. So, maybe wrapping the motor mounts is a good idea due the heat affecting the rubber over time. |

Ok stock setup but the ambient was only 54*
204 water/ 214 oil Shooting right on the wrap, 145 drivers, 168 pass. So, I don't know how conclusive it is. I don't think the slightly shiny/ slightly dirty wrap skewed things too much. |

Adding to this thread. I started another thread today, that I shouldn't have. Anyhow here is some additions to the preceeding information.
I removed the old crusty heat wrap to find a broken rubber mount on one of mine today. But also wanted to show the finished product of the re-wrap project. I used DEI heat shield fabric. This is a woven fiberglass mat with a reflective heat coating on one side. This is not the thin self-adhesive sheeting. I created a pattern from the old fabric once removed and transferred it to the new materials. I then cut out the correct size and shape. The edges on the factory cover were hemmed. I used contact cement to fold over one inch of material on all sides to create the hem. I then removed the old thick fiberglass matting pad from the old fabric and bonded that to my cut our piece of fabric shielding. I used DEI high temp spray-on contact cement for this job as it was a lot easier to cover a larger area with the spray. Then using the original cover as a model I folded the corners creating the container shape for the motor mount to sit in. I stapled the folds using 1/2 galvanized staples. I would have used stainless steel but I could find any. I'll see how these do. Then I took a length of DEI heat shield tape and wrapped around the whole mount just for some added insurance. It turned out pretty good. Here are some shots - one of the broken mount and another of the completed job. |
