Raidmagic | Anyone have powdercoated suspension parts? | ||

If so post up some pics so I can see them please. I'm going to be rebuilding my front suspension and am planning on powdercoating some maybe all of the suspension.
I'd like to see some that's done and how it looks. Thanks |

I would make sure to mask off the areas with critical dimensions, such as where the bushings go.

Another option might be to JetHot coat them.
The coating is very durable and leaves a perminant shine. |

I strongly urge you to not powder your suspension pieces. The powder will cover up any flaw or cracks that may develop in the alum material. If you are looking to shine them up and coat them, I believe POR-15 sells a clear.

Well that's a quality point but what about all the new parts for sale that come powdercoated? What's the difference? I'm not opposed to painting them I was just looking for the durability of powdercoat. I'm not interested in polishing them as I'm not interested in keeping them polished and the work that takes. I like the jethot coat idea, my headers are like that and look nice. Any other ideas? |

I got the idea for JetHot coating from Grassroots motorsports magazine. They used that coating on their suspension arms.
Unlike powdercoating, I suspect you would be able to see stress cracks. To be honest, I am not sure if I could see them on a raw arm... just saying... The only way I would feel good would be to do a magnaflux type of test (I know, aluminum, but something of that ilk for aluminum). |

If you are talking about these from the DC thread Those pieces are anodized. And most suspension pieces that are colored are anodized. |

On mine everything else on the drive train is coated. The only things not coated on mine: the block, cylinder heads, rear knuckles, lower struts, and front upper and lower arms (as those looked good):

No I'm refering more to most anything made by BMR. I've been looking around at different pieces for our cars and most other cars just to see. |

You don't do a walkaround first? That doesn't sound like you... To OP, why do you feel you need the durability of PC? The suspension parts don't really see wear aside from at the joints and from weather. Paint or anodizing will be fine. |

Doesn't anodizing reduce strength and make the parts more brittle? |

Considering annodized alum is used in the aerospace industry, doubt the process weakens alum. Might call NASA and ask them though. They use anodizing. |

remember, powder coating uses heat... and heat could weaken the aluminum.

I didn't consider the steel vs. aluminum side. I'll just stick to painting them and touch them up as needed when they get rock chipped or whatever.
Thanks guys. |

Why would you paint them? Bare aluminum will be way easier to maintain the look of IMO, assuming you don't want a different color.
