I'm thinking about doing this and was wondering if anyone has done it before and if they thought it worth the time and attention? I would assume it needs a good hi-temp bonding agent.

I thought about it, but ended up just spraying some undercoat/sound stuff. I've seen it done on another forum, but am skeptical as to how it (something like dynamat?) would hold up to the elements, power washing, etc.

TJ WOng did a write up on the other forum a few years ago. I will try to post up the pics. Basically someone put cats in past the factory shielding and it got a little hot. So,he installed the shielding and I beleive shallow pop rivets? to hold it up. DEI probably makes some good stuff too, but getting it to stay up is why TJ WOng did it more than once.

Steve - thanks for the photos. The last photo is what I'm looking to do. I have cleaned the whole underside of the car and want to install this stuff. DEI and others on eBay and Amazon sell it for about $55 per 3.5 sq. ft.

All ya need is 3M High Temp Contact Cement.

We use it on the open wheel engine covers where the headers are 1/2 inch from the mat and fiberglass.

Haven't seen it come loose.

Most of the ones I seen tonight are self-adhesive backing. I need to get off my ass and just order it, so its here next week. Its amazing how much dirt and grime there is under that car. I keep cleaning and it never gets clean. From the rear storage buckets back past the rear-end is a mess still. My batwing is covered in oil and gunk from years ago when the original motor was leaking like a sieve.

The front end, back to the end of the seat wells is clean. I still have some cleaning to do up front but its pretty good. Not show car good, but clean enough.

I like the idea of the 3M high temp contact cement.
Does it really adhere that good. If So I will be doing it soon then as my floor boards get warm.

I agree, I wish I did that with my 96. The Magnaflow Cats come without heat shields. I wrapped them with heat wrap and that reduced a lot of the heat problem but, it still gets warm down there.

You can get it both ways, Don.

Yep, superclean is the key to keeping it up there.

Yea, it's good stuff. The shield mat on my Formula Ford's been on for 5 years. And heatwise, it's really good.

I like it better than adhesive back because you out a layer on each surface and let it almost cure before putting the mat on.

I usually do 3 washings with full strength SG and a brush. Let it dry and check for any leftover greese with brake clean lightly sprayed on a rag.

And you'll have to google it, it's not in local stores, Some of the race suppliers do carry it though.

I mostly have experience with DEI (Summit) but hopefully some here have more with the trans tunnel stuff.

Here is a message from TJ to me yesterday.

I used this material:

http://www.designengineering.com/cat...und-insulation

You have to use pop rivets that are backed by a 3/16 fender washer that will secure the heat shield to the tunnel fiberglass. I just 3/8" grip 3/16 pop rivets with the washers to attach the shield material. Its pretty simple, if you can remove the transmission to get additional access and working room. Then cut the material out using tin snips or some very heavy duty scissors, it has an adhesive backing but you need to secure it with the pop rivets as time and heat will degrade the adhesive and it will fall off. The insulation works very well and is still on the car to this date.

I just called my local speed shop. I'm lucky that I have Speed Unlimited directly across the street from Andrews Air Force Base. I can walk in off the street and get most any of this kind of stuff. Its probably a bit cheaper on eBay but here I can drool over all the other cool stuff too. They have it in stock, so looks like I'll be picking some up next week.

Is this the kind of rivet you are talking about? Wide flange?

Wide flange is as big as they go.

An alternative is regular rivits and body washers. Home D usually has body washers in stock.

I'll pick some up. I think I have a bunch of the wide flange rivets in my box. Gotta check. Aluminum washers? I don't want them to rust.

Good point. They're galvanized. They're made for cars, sometime called fender washers. But at Home D, the quality ????

You could always paint them for extra protection.

You may want to experiment first with the pop rivets.
I would suggest aluminum pop rivets as they will "pop" sooner than the steel ones hopefully before they pull through the material. Also, the washers are a good idea to spread the pressure out and conform to the surface better. I have seen some nice thin
gauge washers (1" to 1 1/2" dia.) which is all you would need to hold the insulation.

Agreed... and Yeah... I don't really like the idea of punching more holes in the bottom of my car. I think I'm going to try the adhesive first and if it begins to peel off or I have trouble with it I'll rivet it later. When the car is running and on the road, I normally take it to our club's shop night once a month at the dealership and put it up on a lift to inspect the bottom of the car anyway. So if I keep an eye on it, it should be ok. Just a thought.

I have the DEI self-adhesive stuff all over the firewall and under foot area of my car. I used it to seal all of the places where I brought the cage and wiring through. It's been there for years with no issue. I certainly did't clean it to the extent Bill did before installing...

Keep in mind my car isn't as exposed to the elements, but it certainly sees rain, and certianly higher temps than most.

I would use the washers on both sides of the tunnel to spread the clamping force of the rivet out more.
