Hello Gurus;

A few years ago I made the mistake of installing cheap weatherstrip on my '91 Coupe. Now the windshield strip is cracked and I don't like the way the door seals or the hatch seal are sealing.

What do y'all recommend as far as good/best brands and vendors for weatherstrip? Since I'm thinking of replacing all but the targa seals would be better off (i.e. cheaper LOL) with a whole car kit?

Thanks all!

Joe

Thanks! Think I saw that, those posts seem to lean towards GM or Wilcox -- any opinions on those 2? Thanks again!

I used Willcox. Everything fit as it should. It has only been six months so I can not comment on longevity...

Don't buy Metro, that's all I can say. Wilcox or GM.

Looks like Wilcox is the way to go.

Does anyone remember seeing a link or message about a discount from Wilcox for forum members? That would be nice! Thanks!

Yep. That's at another forum. Tell them you were referred by Corvette-Guru in your comments.

Thanks everyone, I just ordered the pieces I need from Wilcox, with discount not bad.

Should have spent the $ and done it right the first time but that's what I get for trying to be cheap LOL

At least this time I'll have the 'experience' from having done it before! :-)

Let us know how you like it. I always like reviews. The only bad review I've heard on Wilcox is the rear hatch ws either isn't long enough or doesn't sit right in the corner. I'm interested to see if you experience this.

Expect it to be too thick and take some time to compress properly for the doors and roof to work as they should.

Also find some good weatherstrip treatment to put on there to keep it from sticking and keep it protected from UV.

The GM stuff is butter soft and fragile, and the stuff I got the coating was defective, not bonded in many places and started peeling and flaking off.

Yep - this is natural and as the weatherstrip "works itself" in the doors/roof/rear hatch will close properly after a few weeks time.

Search Google for a product called "Gummi Pflege" This is a fantastic german weatherstrip treatment. I treat my weatherstrip every month or so and a 12oz bottle lasts for years. I buy mine at PelicanParts.com

A couple more tips - If the weatherstrip arrives with a chalky white powder on it soak the weatherstrip in a bucket of warm water for a while. This will help remove the white powder. Do not try to clean the weatherstrip with chemicals as it may damage it.

Before installation lay the weatherstrip out in the warm sun for a while (if you have warm sun in your area) or, in front of a warm heater draft. This will help loosen up the weatherstrip and make it more flexible during installation.

When installing, measure out the weatherstrip and start at the center of the panel. It is tempting to start at a corner (ie the windshield corner, rear hatch corners, etc) but, best figment will be achieved if you start at the center of the windshield above the rear view mirror and work out to each corner than down. Same with the rear hatch, targa panel, etc.

Willcox (Corvette Rubber) is my preferred brand. I will be changing out the weatherstrip on my '93 this spring with weatherstrip from Willcox. I have also used Lonestar long ago with good results.

Years ago Willcox posted at the other forum: "We have the CRC brand kits on the forum special price section of the web site."

So I asked if they still sell CRC, and got this response: "It's actually a sponge rubber coated in latex. It's American made except for the rear hatch. There isn't an American version of that weatherstrip. I've had no problems with this rubber lasting. The only problems I've seen is people being to rough with the removable top. That will tear both the weatherstrip and the roof panel up."

Does anybody of you know if Willcox sells still CRC stuff?

Best wishes
Eike
