Well, after 4 years I finally found one and pulled the trigger. Paid today and should ship this week. Excellent seller from TGO.

Intake is dirty from sitting but will clean up nice, no stripped holes, etc. Not sure if I'll blast it or dip and powdercoat...we'll see. Got another car buddy here who wants to look at it and give me a recommendation.

Had NOS installed, I bought without the lines.

A few pics below.

I'm excited to get it!

Matthew

Ported plenum, ported SLPs, ported Edelbrock big mouth base. SR should give me another 400 rpm I'm hoping.

I think I might have a buddy locally who wants it for his 88 camaro. He told me to stop and see him tomorrow.

Ps...my wife is pissed I bought it so I had to give her a piece of my mind about how this is my only hobby and it makes me happy. I eventually got her to see my perspective.

That's exactly what I told her, and that it makes me happy so deal with it.

Aso, Marcus, she always gets what she wants whether it be clothing, hardwood floors, repainted bedroom, LANDSCAPING ROCKS, etc...

Cool. Do you know what size intake gasket the ports are compared to your present intake?
Are they larger than the head intake ports?

My answer is no. I'd rather be working on my car. But if I can't buy things to work on my car with, I'm stuck doing those other things.

The SR is unported and untouched. I don't know what it is offhand. My heads are ported and gasket matched to a felpro 1205 I believe. I have a gasket set in the garage to double check with. I don't know if I'm going to do any port work. The SR should either match up with or be smaller than the heads. Just port matching that from intake to heads wouldn't really be any gain.

Would the Superram work with the Edelbrock base?
Here's an install I found. Maybe you've seen it.
http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c4/vader86/superram.html
Looks like shallow holes were drilled in the "china wall" to hold the silicone on the last installation of your new base.

Joe - it would work with the edelbrock base. Basically the same thing. But I've got a small oil leak at the intake gaskets anyway and I want to keep it as a package.

Also, I have seen Vader's page a long time ago, thanks for bringing that up again. I've been reading through old SR posts deciding what (if any) mods I'll make for mounting the runners and plenum. I think I might do just allen cap scews and not mess with it that much. Not sure yet.

Intake arrived today. I'm excited but can already tell I have some work to do on it. I'm not 100% happy with the Accel casting on the ports and a few exterior flaws as well. I guess I will have some minor port work to do before powdercoating. I also know I don't like the stock bolt set up with those 12 pt heads, so I'm gonna decide what route I'm gonna go with that.

Finally got my intake back from the powdercoat shop. It was bead blasted. Guy said you can't soda blast aluminum because it will impregnate the metal then you can't paint it correctly.

Anyway, it's very clean but it certainly changed the finish of the aluminum. Very dull with a dry, chalky appearance. I will certainly PC it now since I don't want to polish anything. But I'll be getting it powdercoated elsewhere since they screwed me around for a week. I told the owner if he knocked it from $100 to $75 he could do it but he said no, $100. So I said bye bye.

You have to wash with a vinagar/water solution after soda blasting.

Looks like they used play sand to blast it... which is what I use in mine for steel/cast iron and it does an OK job on alum as well but you get the appearance you have now.... they also never should have blasted it directly into the ports....

When you get back from the power coater it should have been heated up enough (to cure the paint) to expand the metal and get most of it out of the ports.

I reckon you said that you were going to port on it a little anyway so that'll get it out of the ports for sure....

Until you drop it off with the powder coaster be careful touching it with your bare hands because the oil will contaminate the surface and they will have to re-blast it.
Will

Will - I think you are right. I found some sand on the top of the intake, so that's what they used. So the guy lied to me and it wasn't bead blasting. Figures. Another reason I won't be going back to him.

Yes, I'll clean up the ports. I was thinking of either washing it with soap/water or spraying it down with some cleaner when I'm done. Do you think that's a good idea? I'll also be wearing gloves while I port it so that should help.

Cus I'm sooooooooooooo busy, I took a piece of billet I had in the shop (didn't have any cast).
I hit one side with soda and the other with glass @105 psi.
Each was hit for about 10 seconds.

Soda just doesn't clean as well as glass (obviously).
Soda is great for paint removal and can be useful in "restoration" finishes where glass is more aggressive (but less than sand).
The glass left a nice finish on the aluminum.

But, you have to be careful with glass if you're going to paint it, too smooth and the paint won't adhere properly, self etching primer helps.
For p/c the surface can be smoother because the powder melts in.

Like Will said - hot soapy water wash (preferably with Dawn). I use Simple Green first and soapy water while the SG is still wet. Painted a bunch of cast alum this way.

Finally back from the powdercoater, gloss black. Overall it turned out nice, a few imperfections in the surface but those are from the casting, not the PC. I could/should have sanded it a little more but oh well.

I ordered all stainless steel allen head bolts for it and I need a couple little gaskets then I'm pretty much ready to install.

I wonder if the powder coating sealed up any casting flaws

Might want to pressure test it before installing.

I don't know what casting flaws there would be to seal?

I have to make some gaskets for my EGR block off plates and I still have to chase the threads just in case. I also need to make TB gaskets and finish the IAC housing and new top plate for the TB, as well. Lots of little things. I also need to pick up a thermostat and distributor gasket, I won't make those since they are 99 cents and I'd rather just get them premade.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Thanks. I wish it was done already. Have to wait until I have an entire day off with no kids so I can work uninterrupted.

That looks sweet!
When my wife complains about money spent on the Vette I remind her of the big block speed boat I used to own (23' bright red Baja with straigt pipes out the back). It had a 60 gal tank that I filled with gas everytime I would go out. It also depreciated like a rock!
What really pissed her off though is when I painted the logo from the rap group N W A in large letters along the side. I had it parked in our driveway. She was a teacher in the local school at the time and she felt it showed disrespect to minorities. I eventually changed it to the Chevrolet "Heartbeat" logo.
