In my opinion, one should never spend a life savings on a car unless it's severely needed. If you can comfortably afford it, get it. If you're cashing in everything you have, it's not a smart investment for some fun. You'll never get that money back out of the car.

They are asking $17K for it Pappy? That is probably a bit high. $13k- 13.5k would probably be in the ballpark for a 97 with those miles.

I'm thinking that's on the high side pappy but I'm a cheap sucker and don't like to pay. I haven't looked at Kelly or Edmunds but my wallet would say $13,500 and $15,000 max for the 6 spd. You can get a lot more car for just a few grand more. And don't run yourself broke getting it. Although I've spent all I had several times myself to get what I want.

Hi Pappy good to see you on again.....The C5 is a good car and they continued to make improvements all thru the generation. One big thing you will like is the ease of getting in and out of it. The LS1 is a great engine with good power and that will make you smile...the six speed is solid. It's an evolutionary move up and the C6 a step up from that.

I bought an 02 C5 a couple of years back with all the bells and whistles that had 87K on the clock and paid 14,000 for it. It needed tires so there went a 1000 bucks for Michelin run flats....then I changed out all the fluids just because I felt good doing it. I would get the latest year you can afford but I would deal some on the 97 it's a nice car but 14 or 15K should buy it......

Good to see you back...

I am not a fan of the NADA guides when it comes to putting value to Corvettes.

Take that Vette and stare comparing it to others with like condition and miles. Use Autotrader, craigslist, ebay, and things like that.

$17k is a bit high, but if well cared for, not insane, and the miles are low.

Not a killer deal... but not bad as some I have seen!! Just do some comparisons... see what you find.

You make a valid point pappy. You can pick up a car at 13 and spend a few grand getting it the way you want. Or you can find one the way you want and take it the way it is with no cash outlay after purchase. Again, it boils down to a car is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. No one will bash you one way or the other. You're a smart ol'bird.

Like Andy said, 17k isn't outrageous, and if you got it for that I wouldn't think you got screwed, 97's just won't typically bring the high dollar. I'd shoot him an offer at about 14.5 or 15. that is a good looking car.

Like Marcus said, the C5 is much easier getting in and out of. And the LS1 is a stout engine with way more power than a stock 84 or LT1 for that matter.

My free opinioin is that for $17k you can get a Z06. And that's what I would do. I also saw a 2005 clean title C6 go for $16900 two weeks ago.

If you're ok with salvage cars you can get a Z06 for $13k, two of them sold on Sunday at that price:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321103504086? ... _trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-C ... :MEWAX:IT&forcev4exp=true

However, I am much more willing to buy low and fix up than most people, and I have two engines I can put in if I find the high mileage engine in a "good deal" isn't working to my specs...then I rebuild that engine and put it in the next good deal

Has everything from like 1997-2009 or something stupid like that.
