Since I have over 400 hours in the bodywork, 95% of it correcting bodyshop work, what's another 80 hours just to install the headlight buckets???

It's unbelievable how much sloppy workmanship was done on this car AND the amount of body putty that was used to cover it up. But there's a whole lot of C2's out there like this.

The car won't get painted until next spring. I decided to throw the doors on and found more screw-ups and body putty that needs to be removed.

Anyway, the nose section was replaced, the part that has the headlight buckets in it and about a foot of the top of the fenders.

First, this piece was made by North American Rockwell and measuring from the hood to the outer point of the nose where the buckets fit, it's 1/4 inch off side to side, the idiots.
So, what did the bodyshop do? Fix it, of course not, they ground out the 12 bucket mounting holes so large that the mounting bolts will pass right thru or just clamp on 1/4 of their integrated washer.

4 steel mounting plates, 3 holes each, all had to be welded smaller then reground. Plus since the glass is off the correct measurement, the holes will have to be welded again once the bolts are in the correct place and marked.

This takes a long time because it takes 20 minutes to put the buckets in.

After welding & grinding the holes (not counting setting a blanket on fire that covered the radiator core support), the front of the nose had to be reglassed to bring it into dimension and to get the height equal on both sides.

All the putty had to be removed from the top of the nose and the sides of the bucket mounting plates. The body shop used putty to adjust the gaps between the body and the buckets AND still had them too large, they were over 1/4 inch and should be 1/8th. Plus they had the wrong radius in the corners AND they ground the buckets to match, the idiots.

So, reglass all the edges that surround the buckets. Very time consuming.

I've probably had the buckets in and out 25 times.

This is what an original 67 bucket and gaps should look like.
It is solid fiberglass but will get a swipe of glazing putty to cover sanding scratches.
In the pic, it's far from being done, needs to be sanded smooth and the edges touched up.

THEN, the area from the back of the buckets to the hood has to be glassed and sanded smooth (to remove more putty).

This is why concourse quality restorations take 2 years and cost $100k.

At least.

Good lawd! At least you didn't find any lumber underneath the shoddy work, unlike a guy's C4 on CF. If it's any consolation, it's gonna look kick-ass when you're done ;-)

Hell Bill, if I were helping you we coulda had that whole front cap done in half a day with just a couple of trips to the hardware store. Course there would have been a few imperfections but nobody would even see them from more than 15 feet.

That's OK, I didn't want to use a paint roller for the clear coat anyway.

Speaking of finding stuff, besides the putty, I had this little gift from GM under the windshield. They filled the windshield gap with dum-dum and then a black sealant that is a freekin' mess.
The windshield molding clips shown in the pics (the square things)had to be restored cause the repos don't work well.

They're put in with screws, pull em, clean out the sealent with a knife, soak in mineral spirits for 2 days to remove the rest of that black shit, glass bead them and paint all 21 of them.

Yea, you should be able to restore a car in 3 weeks.

Nah, there's a lot of guys in NCRS doing this.

And there's guys in NCRS having this done at the few good restoration shops for that $100k Andy mentioned. Which makes a certain 66 in Fl. look like a bargain.

I read a story in Forza magazine (Ferrari) several years ago... it was about the cost of going from a 90 point Dino to a 100 point Dino.

The costs were staggering... because the problems between the two are quite big... body alignment, paint and body condition, originality of fasteners and hardware, interior and electrical issues...

To do it right was $300k... then again, Ferrari is expensive... but that was to pick up 10 points.

Yea, my buddy that oversees the Pebble Beach cars said just paint can run $50-$75k.

Of course, $300k is chump change compared to a PB winner.

Corvettes are a bit easier but the more original your car is, the better (if you're going that way). A lot of the repo parts are easily spotted by the judges. Luckily, the repo fasteners are pretty good, correct head marks, etc.
You really have to be careful who you buy these bolts from.

I think I'll be under $100 for the bolts, etc that I need. I'm buying them cause it's easier than trying to send them out for cad plating. I thought about doing cad (zinc) here but a decent setup is over $300. I do have the stuff to do the black phosphate on some of the bolts.

And where is most of that $50-$75k spent on a paint job? LABOUR... It's all in the prep and sanding... the work between coats... the post paint polishing and buff outs...

hundreds of hours of labour at $25 an hour (semi-skilled). Two, three, four guys working on the paint...

I have a guy that has a '70 at the shop that I wish could see this thread. HE's a huge dickwad and can't understand why the work on his car is taking so long - he's one of those that want's it way past perfect but expects it for 1982 ford Escort pricing. He wrecked it and should have taken the ins money and ran but hell no, a collision job turned into a full on frame off resto. he thinks he should have had his car back in 6 months. He wanted an LT1 hood - he found one literally out of a trash pile with 7 coats of paint - took more body hours to prep and fit even before the painting could even take place than half the car was worth... every nut and bolt has to be painted, etc.... HUGE loss by the shop on this but it set a system in place where I made books/logsheets/timesheets etc for future projects so this don't happen again.

I admire you and all the rest who choose to invest this much of their time and patience, not to mention money into a car - and do it right. I had no idea what all it took till I seen some of it.

PART 2:

While jacking up the nose with a hydraulic bottle jack placed on the radiator core support and the hood surround (yea, don't ask)...........I heard a band and saw the surround had broken.

Was actually lucky cause I found more bodyshop quality repairs, "Hey, there's a crack here"......"Just grab a handful of fiberglass goop and shove it up in there, Bubba, the customer will never know."

Pics:
The goop that was supposed to be a repair.

What it looked like.

And what a proper glass repair should be.
