When the last bullet-producing lead smelter closes its doors on Dec. 31, it will mark a major victory for those who say lead-based ammunition pollutes the environment, but others warn 'green' bullets will cost more, drive up copper prices and do little to help conservation

There has been legitimate argument that lead shot is bad... but that's small fragmented pellets that can be eaten and such.

A 9mm slug isn't a health hazard in the same way... the bigger problem is the smelting plants. But if they can clean up, that might just fix the problem once and for all.

And yet we can all drive around with lead weights on our wheels. I guess they aren't a problem. I wonder what will replace them.

That is changing. Several states have already banned them including Illinois. It is a huge fine here for a shop if they install a lead wheel weight.

WOW... not a good option at all. That would easily triple the cost of ammo... maybe even more.

We use Mallory (which is a Tungsten alloy) in balancing crankshafts and a single 1" X 1.5" slug cost over $30.00. Thats for the cheap powdered metal shit that chips and occasionally breaks apart when we press it into the crank.

Tungsten we use for "consumables" (the electrode) in the TIG welder... a single 3/32" Tungsten electrode cost $25.00....

When I buy lead projectiles for reloading I buy them by the thousand... 45ACP 185gr SWC bullets cost me right at $100 per 1K and those boxes are HEAVY.

There are all copper projectiles out there but they are super expensive compared to lead or jacketed lead and they take away alot of latitude with reloaders because they are so long for their weight. They eat up case capacity for powder and they have lots of bearing surface area... I have used the 165gr Barnes TSX in my .300 Weatherby Mag but I'm really not a fan of them for most things.

Of course, I don't think there is much to all this closing of the last US smelter.... CHINA will import lead to us, probally cheaper than we can smelt it here.

THE BIG QUESTION IN MY MIND IS "WHY IS THERE SUCH A SHORTAGE OF .22 RIMFIRE?"

YOU CAN FIND .223, YOU CAN FIND 9MM, YOU CAN FIND .40 OR .45 ACP, BUT .22LR IS LIKE HEN'S TEETH. IS IT HORDERS, WOULD BE PROFITEERS, SURVIVALISTS, OR IS THE PROFIT MARGIN JUST HIGHER ON CENTERFIRE AMMO? DON'T THINK THE GOVT IS BUYING UP .22LR.

THIS IS WHAT MOST PEOPLE SHOOT MOST, THE DEMAND IS THERE, SO WHERE ARE THE SHELLS?

Locally in my area I know there are 10-15 "profiteers" buying up every box of 22LR availiable.

At the last gun show, (which is a very small show held at my VFW post) there were 4 people with tables stacked full of 22LR...

One of the guys bragged to a buddy of mine (who is an FFL and had the table next to him) that he has a "group of retirees who go to the local Walmarts, Gander Mtn and Dicks stores every day to buy every box of 22LR on the shelf". I kid you not - This SOB had 2 tables and 22LR ammo stacked chest high covering every inch.

He was selling the 333 box of Winchester for $40 and the 550 Federals or Remington 550's for $55 and the Remington Bucket-O-Bullets for $100.... Everybody knows they are $18, $29 and $59 at Walmart.

If I go and check my local guntrader web sight there are 10-15 ads with people re-selling 22LR for 50% profit.

In time it will pass. These people can't buy it all up forever and from what I saw at the last couple of gunshows regular people have stopped paying panic prices. It's just like the 2008 election all over again but it's on a bigger scale and hence taking longer to self corerct.

Local gun store said they only make 22 rounds are certain times of year.

Which would make sense if they all did it
Which does not make sense.

I'M THINKING YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THE CORRECTION. WE MAY SEE SOME OF THESE FOLKS TRYING TO GET OUT FROM UNDER BEFORE TOO LONG, ESPECIALLY IF THE REPUBS TAKE THE SENATE.

They will either import it or use recycled lead from car batteries, etc.

FYI picked up a 500 round brick of .22lr before going to the range, and some more .380auto

I talked to the range owners, they didnt seem the think the anti-lead thing would have that bad an impact

Just the opposite, there's more demand than ever
