When someone posts a large image, it stretches the page out and makes it difficult for many users to read the thread without scrolling. We will have solutions for this with the new software. But until then, please abide by the following for images larger than 500 pixels or so.

It's extremely simple. Use the [web] tags instead of the Resized Image button instead of the image one, and your post will look similar to this:

[web]http://www.myserver.com/corvettephoto.jpg[/ web]

The result will look something like this:

[web]http://webpages.charter.net/khasting/temp2/sticker2.jpg[/web]

Thank you for your cooperation.

PS: Mods, it would also be beneficial if you guys edited the posts with large photos whenever you stumble across one.

Even though it's said the software here is dated, it does indeed have some unique features that I like. The different options you describe here are among them and I hope they are all retained. This should probably be a sticky for the time being.

Forgive me for my computer illiteracy but on my photobucket account it does not give me the option you listed for a smaller picture.

These are the options I get from photobucket...
Email & IM
Direct Link
HTML Code
IMG Code

Which would be the best one to use for the smaller pictures???

TIA For any help

CentralCoaster, thanks for that tip.

Just so everyone knows, that "web button" option is not available in the quick reply box. But if you Post a regular reply you will see it.

However, the web tags still work in the quick reply box. You will just have to type them in your self.

Use the Direct Link from Photobucket. The web tag CentralCoaster is talking about is a button on the software here. See my post above though, if your using the quick reply feature you won't see that button.

If you use a normal "Post Reply" you will see it as one of the options.
Just click that button and a window will open. Past your photobucket link you copied (The Direct Link) into that window.

If you want to use the Quick Reply window (like I always use), just type the tags in manually. Whenever you want to post a picture type this:
[web]then past your url here (direct link)[/web]

Just an observation,

Those whom post a reply quote to an original post of twenty pics, followed by two or three others like same reply quotes, should be bandwidth throttled down to dial-up speeds for one month.

Another way would be to resize the pic on your computer before you up load it to photobucket.

That is a great discovery, CC. Thanks.

I agree, especially when the poster is this first to respond to the thread...

You would think we knew what they were responding to....Drives me nuts...and invaraibly someone will quote THEM, too.lol

If someone quotes a post with a lot of pics, it doesnt matter a damn what the speed of your internet is. It will still load the page just as fast if the thread is quoted once, or quoted 20 times. It only loads each item once, not once for everytime it appears.

I "get it". I converted a pic of the jack handle locations, last night, right after I read this post. I think I was one of the early readers.

Are you sure? Note the width of the format for this thread, so far, then post one. we'll see.

Well, I see the two top photos are larger than the bottom ones. But I can still see them without scrolling. But I am using a 17" monitor with the resolution set to 1280X1024.

Let me know. I don't wanna be the guy that causes trouble.

Well, not this kind.

Monitor size doesn't matter, only resolution.

On 1280 it stretches mine way more than it needs to. WTF?

And I assume there's still some users on 1024x768 resolution, it'd be nice if it works for them.

I'm gonna edit your post now!

Ok, now it just barely doesn't fit. Looks like 640ish is about our limit. I'll try to maximize the viewable space without scrolling when we switch software.

Can you move all those boxes at the top left of the screen? Maybe put them at the top or bottom of the page? Coz once you scroll down past the Vette Top 100, Survey, User Rankings and such, there is a LOT of empty space on the left side.

I can't yet, but trust me I will try to later. Those are small, yet they hog about 20% of the screen.

Even with all of CC's editing, I cannot read all your post, quoted above,
without panning across the screen. It doesn't fit the new format width,
created by your pictures. The pix stretch the format for all of the thread,
above the pix, the pix and below the pix. I can see that the red car and
the plane are at 800 pixels width. The Corvettes are at 640 pixels. But
because of the 800 pixel pictures, the format is widened for the whole
thread by the 800 pixel pix. Now plain text that is automatically wrapped,
is wrapped to the wider format. Once a thread is stretched, as this thread
is, the only way to limit the width of a post is to hit enter for a hard return
at the end of each line, like I have.

RACE ON!!!

PS. For clarity, it isn't just that I have to pan over to center the text in
order to read the thread. That would be a minor inconvenience. I have to
pan each line to read it. As I read, I have to pan to the right to finish the
line. Then I have to pan back to to the left to read the start of the next
line, then pan back to the right to finish it, then pan back left to start the
next, and so on. It is a royal pain.

I, for one will do what I can

Even 640 pixels is too much for now, but that's partly because of the software which will change soon. I edited the post so those pics above won't stretch it now.

Here's a 500 pixel image...

How does this work for you guys? And what browser/resolution are you running?

On 1024x768 with IE, I can simply scroll to the right once, then I can see the whole thread without panning back and forth.

On 1152x864, it only cuts off a tiny bit.

So I'm gonna say 500 pixels wide is a good benchmark for now, unless you guys tell me otherwise.

Thanks, CC!

I think the 500 pixel option is the best. I usually use my laptop, and even with the ones at the beginning of the thread, I had to scroll over.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. I did put my pics inside of scrollers, but still sized them to 800 wide. I need to remember to keep them under 500.

CC,
I can read a line with out panning, but when I scroll down to the next post, I have to pan back to see who the author is.

That post is not a valid test. The 500 pixel picture may be just fine, but the format is pre-stretched by CSS996's pictures you edited. Even in the scroll boxes (with the web tags) they are still wider than the 500 pixel pic you are trying to judge. The only way you can judge a proper width is if the test object is the widest item in that thread. So far, it isn't.

CFI, I disagree, the scroll boxes resize to whatever the thread width is.

It is deceiving because the software adds about 2" of unnecessary width to the right of the [img] photos. So believe it or not, that 500 pix one of the C6 is stretching it, not the [web] boxes.

Exhibit 1: First pic is stretching thread out 2" further than it needs to.

http://www.c4guru.com/modules.php?nam ... file=viewtopic&t=1458

Exhibit 2: Shrink this window down, it'll go as small as any text-only window will. The software limits the minimum width.

Yeah, I know 640 is too wide currently. I can't use a 1024 resolution without panning on it. I want everything to be user friendly on a 1024x768 screen.

I'll work on getting those 640 images user friendly on the new software. With the current stuff, 500 is the limit. Nobody really has any business posting pics larger than 640 online. That size is usually big enough to get the point across, and small enough to not hog email/bandwidth space.

And if there's actually any users still on 800x600, well, damn, I guess an option to turn images off and replace them with links is the only answer.

I've always wanted a stripped down viewing format that is faster loading and can be viewed at work without getting in trouble. One thing CF didn't have that I thought could be hugely popular. Obviously it'd still have to have places for ads.
