I learned long ago that I would never understand fashion cycles. When I was a teen my peers would go out in public wearing plastic clothes that only the strangest of the break dancers would wear. The next crazy was PHC stuff that looked like pajamas. I looked at the websites for the usual suspects that make head units. I really don't understand why there aren't more 1.5 and 2 din models but that aside I don't know why every head unit has to look like the lighting system from a SF bay area disco circa 1977. I like the look of the factory radio. Even Mcintosh has spiced up their faceplates a bit. Do you know of any head units that I might like? Maybe a full on car PC would do the trick since I could set the screen up however I want, LOL cat photos no doubt.

Ebay has a number of indash PC units. I would recommend a touch screen and you must watch out because some require an actual PC in your car. They are cool though cause you can have huge hard drives and play movies, music or even surf the net from you radio

I have a spankin' new Pioneer head unit in my Amigo. Perhaps there is a setting I could use for disco mode, but it is relatively tame the way I have it now. Single DIN though....
But I agree. Damn head units look like somebody is playing Space Invaders! Cheezy grafix, dey haz dem! |

I agree... I don't dig the bling.
We have a cheapo Pioneer in the Jeep and it is very conservative looking. Here is the score with 2DIN heads: THEY SUCK! For the most part, they are large, pricy and lack basic features. I had a Pioneer a few years back that was 2DIN... I can't say I hated it, but I sure didn't like it much. I ultimately replaced it with an Alpine 7998. Sadly, that head isn't available anymore from Alpine, check ebay. It requires an amp, tho. eBay Search on Alpine 7998 It is one of the BEST head units I have ever had or listened to. Just amazing. when I bought mine 5 years ago, I paid about $750 for it. A shit load, eh? But worth every penny. The only problem? No HD radio... that's it. It will do just about everything else. |

The new ones have generally less bling than they used to.
Try Nakamichi, they have oem looking ones. Or a factory takeout. So many of them are double or 1.5 din and have mp3 compatibility. |

I'm gonna install an Eclipse AVN2210P:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-MRHf1Kxl ... em/Main.aspx?i=099AVN2210 It's a little fugly, but the interface is fairly simple, and the detachable GPS appealed to me, since I store my car for half the year (with a car kit you can use it in another vehicle). I got it for $399 over the holidays, figured I couldn't go too wrong. |

Eclipse and Nak are some of the more plain looking head units.
The ones I like though are the older Alpine head units from the 96-00 years. They are solid built units from Japan, not the crappy stuff they sell now. |

I had a JVC KD-SH99, bought it specifically for the clean interface, especially painted black.
