No matter where your tastes in racing run, this is one of the great events in motorsports. It's on par with the Indy 500, Le Mans, Monaco, The Knoxville Nationals or Kings Royal in sprint cars, The Indy Nationals in NHRA drag racing. I'm always more than ready for the resumption of racing by this time and the 500 never disappoints in excitement, drama and certainly not in close, competitive racing. Seldom in the modern era has the winner been a foregone conclusion until the flag dropped. [size=18:0447e112fa] ARE YOU READY? [/size:0447e112fa] As the great Dale Earnhardt Sr. once said, "Drop the rag, let's go!"

I am really excited...more or less just to see what Dale Jr. does with his new team. Curious to see if the past couple weeks have been a fluke or not.

I certainly don't think Junior's results so far have been a fluke. But that being said, there are still 500 miles to go. Anything can happen and usually does.

As much as a Chevy man I am this year I'm going with Michael Waltrip.

I'm not real crazy about toyota's but I like Mike and his commentary when he's in the booth is great.

Lets see if the toyota's can hold together this year.

To me the Daytona 500 means spring is just around the corner. I can't wait.

Didn't take long for the Gibbs team to show that Toyota's can compete!

I'll be pulling for Junior though.

You can go to Nascar.com and get the starting lineup. You could also print it so you know who is driving what for who.

Well, NASCAR has certainly come along way from those early Junior Johnson days. It is hard to believe that all started as a competition for moonshine drivers. I heard that Junior Johnson required that his car be equipped with a cigarette lighter.

My feelings about NASCAR is that is has become far too corporate. The whole "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" aspect of stock cars is all but gone. Really, you can't even tell the Chevy's from the Toyota's, they're all basically the same car. But it's still fun to watch and racing is racing.

BTW, when do you think they will change the name to the "Hendrick Cup"?

American cars are #1 with me too but what's an American car anymore? How many parts on the big 3 domestic builders come from foreign sources? With the international nature of all of the major automakers, I just don't care anymore. There's a reason that Toyota is see-sawing with GM as the world's largest auto company and that's because they make great products that people want. But at least most of their vehicles that are sold here are also built here, providing hundreds of thousands of jobs both directly and through their out-sourcing. No amount of wishing will take us back to the good old days of American domination in this field so I just don't worry about it anymore. I've never been a fan of makes in racing anyway, only the drivers and teams. For instance, back in the 80s, my two favorite drivers were DW and Bill Elliott, Chevy and Ford drivers respectively. But even with all of this being said, I admit I was a little bummed when I heard that one of my two current favorites, Tony Stewart, would be in a Toyota this year. But now that I see how they're running, I've gotten over it real fast.
Go Tony, go Junior and there are quite a few others that if they won today would be great too. Lovable Mikey, Kenny Wallace (wouldn't that be cool?) DJ in his last 500, he's a hometown favorite here in Hickory and many others.
If your favorite driver can't win today, who would you like to see win?

I wouldn't mind seeing DJ win in his last 500. But at least he got a win here once.

Another one that's a sentimental favorite is Mark Martin. Mikey has won it twice, so I'd rather see someone else. Kenny Wallace would be ok too. He doesn't shut up now, can you imagine what he would be like if he won?

Once? DJ has won the Daytona 500 three times!
I can't imagine a race fan in the whole world who'd be disappointed if Martin could pull it off too. He's like Harry Gant was. Tough as nails, yet loved and respected by all. One of the true good guys who make this the greatest all-American sport.

I'd love to see Martin win it. Nobody has mentioned Matt Kenseth. All through speedweeks this year and almost every year, he is quiet, flying under the radar. Then in the 500 he comes to the front. Wasn't good last year through speedweeks but was running 3rd on the last lap when the crash happened and took him out. I look for Casey Kahne to do well this race and this year. I also think Ryan Newman is going to have a comeback season.

Man, Chubby Checkers still looks great! How old must he be? I was just a little squirt when the "twist" was first popular. I used to do it for the entertainment of my parents and whomever way back then. That and I did a great Stan Laurel imitation that always cracked everyone up. What the hell, I was just an adorable little shit.....

All sports today, to spur more growth, reach out to an international audience. Japan is a big market and they've had Nascar sponsored races there. Just as they have had football games in England. Toyota is a huge player in the auto market and evolved to meet the challenge. Hell, there was a time when a yankee driver was an outsider. Prolly still is.

And also to just a diversified audience in general, and that's great. And one really has to appreciate the fact that Nascar won't put up with the personal behavior tolerated in other major sports, as long as the criminal in question has exceptional talent. Of all of the major American sports, it's by far the most family-friendly in that respect, refusing to glorify anyone who's not truly worthy of being a hero and role model.
And speaking of family, they just showed a shot of Jeff Gordon's wife and little girl. How adorable was she? After the BS of his first marriage, I'm very happy for Jeff. He now enjoys the only thing that really matters in life. He no doubt has that important perspective on life now that only parenthood can fully allow. God bless him.

50 to go. It's getting down to crunch time. Not too many laps until all true contenders will have to show their hand. Almost time to shit or get off the pot.
I'm tickled that it's been such a clean race to this point. I hope that holds.

No worries, I took a holesaw and drilled holes in it to help with airflow. It will stop any dirt that is larger than the size of the intake valves.

another caution.

Here is my prediction... with 11 or so laps to go... with a couple to go, a big wreck, and Sam Hornish will sneak out the win.

I will look like a genius for getting that right... otherwise, nothing will change.

In all reality, I would not be surprised if Kyle Busch wins this thing.

another caution.

Races get easier to predict the closer to the finish.

All I can say is that Kyle is looking like the 2nd coming of Dale Sr today. I am impressed.
