I just wanted to know...up to what year can I do a engine replacement for my 91 L98. I want a LT1 or anything newer if it will fit. I found a 93 coupe here at the local juckyard and the motor is fine. Will it fit and what do I need to do to make it right with out major problems.

IMO your better with another SBC vice a LTX swap but if you're dead set on a more modern swap go LSX.

a lt1 swap would be really stupid imo. unless there is already a lt1 in there. if you have some money and want a really strong engine go with the ls1 with a t56 transmission. they put ls1's in1998-2002 tran ams and camaros. the swap wont be cheap tho

It has almost 200,000 miles on it and it don't have the power that my 93 Cobra has, it's been smoking aliddle plus it's been giving me alot of problems. In the last two days I have put a new map sencer, throttle sencer,EGR vavle, new plugs and wires and the car still runs like crap. I just don't understand why I couldn't just put anewer year motor in. But you guys know more than I do, if I rebuild the L98 and could get 400/450 HP out of it that would be great(350/375 would be ok!). But I would love to know what parts to buy to make that engine have that kind of power.

there is soooo many aftermarket parts that will make that thing run fast. put a supercharger in it you get 100hp
chip adds 50 exhaust 20 intake 30 cam 10 headers 30. most those numbers are guesses but thats about how much it added to my friends 89 toyota pickup

If you pull your engine, and rebuild it, using all or some of your parts,

Block machining, clean, tear down and rebuild is @ $1000. Slap all new sensors on it, have your injectors cleaned or buy new ones, new plug wires, cap rotor, a set of headers, port the heads (maybe) and drive it

if your looking for a later model motor...i've been thinking bout the LQ9 truck motor later on down the road. shortblock is bout the same but iron. a nice set of heads, cam and intake and you can be sum where round 450hp or so depending on cam heads etc. i have not researched it enuff to kno all the facts but there is a lot to consider..like all the brackets and placement of acceseries on the front of the motor. a friend of mine bought a truck motor sold the things he didnt need...bought heads from GM complete...cam from comp cams and a used intake off ebay. says he has 3500 in motor with his labor and making 425-450 hp and the motor only had 12k miles. its got me to thinking a lot about it. you also have to consider harness/headers/mounts and several other lil odds that will add up. trans upgrade to. its just a thought.

There's a lot of work that goes into swapping a L98 and a LT1 or later. If my motor goes, I'll be pulling it and stroking it to a 383. That along with headers, ported heads, gears, new torque converter, and a couple other little things will make a sweet little street car with tons of torque and usable power.

Just my opinion. But opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one and they usually stink.

A 1991 has this thing called the "CCM" - Central Control Module. It integrates the engine and brake controllers and the IP.

You go with any conversion, you are risking the functions. Now, with that said, a 1992 LT1 conversion might go, but I don't see the value in it. You would need all the LT1 stuff - engine, controller, harness AND exhaust.

For that matter, any major upgrades you do, and the exhaust has to go.

We really need to talk... seriously talk. You will get a PM from me.
