I have a 96 Corvette automatic, with 115,000 miles. It start and reverse fine. But does not seem to accelerate at all after 20 mph, especially when I press on the gas pedal hard, but when I release the pedal and press it again then the it start picking some speed. However, the RPM is very high for that normal speed. I suspect the car doesnt changing gear. Please help me to fix this problem. Thank you very much!

are you getting any codes? Does the Service Engine Soon light come on?

Where are you located? Autozones will read engine codes for free. Just to make sure.

I wonder if you have a transmission problem brewing, tho...

That's also a sign of a bad fuel filter or fuel delivery problems. Like Andy said, codes are the first place to check. We need a little more info to help give a better diagnosis.

I was thinking the same. Fuel filter/fuel pump.

I was thinking plugged cat, but it wouldn't come back to life after a throttle stab.

ahh, touchet, I didn't read that part correctly. I thought he was saying stabbing it it fell on its face, then partial throttle it would accelerate.

Dear Mekanic,
I will check the fuel pressure. But not sure of what you mean by plugged "cat" is it the catalytic converter? Im truly sorry for this question, since im not the mechanic and don't know much of mechanic's terminology. If it is, what is the best way to fix the plugged cat? Thank you very much

I don't know where you guys are going with these fuel ideas.

It sounds like the trans is slipping up to higher rpm, but when he backs off, it drops into the next gear, allowing him to finally pick up speed. My Ford did when the TV cable came unhooked.

TV cable adjustment?
Low tranny fluid?
Burnt clutches?

You don't have one. Your trans is totally electronic controlled thru the PCM (under hood computer). Aamco advertises a free computer scan for problems, you might want to have them scan it for you. It does sound more like a tranny than an engine problem to me, but over the internet diagnostics are not often reliable.

Yeah, just don't let Aamco work on it.

What inputs does the ECM use to control pressure in the trans?

He doesn't have an ECM either, it is a PCM. I would not suggest Aamco as a repair point, but the free scan does not require any committments.

Now where is PeteK when we need him?

No TV cable, his tranny is electronic. You have the same problems I did, go get a tranny guy to take a look at the car. Bet you have burnt clutch bands and check the fluid level.
