Why does everyone mount a throttle body on the FRONT of the
plenum of a Holley Stealth Ram (HSR)?

Because that is where the hole is?
I don't believe there is enongh room to reverse it
I did give consideration to building a custom top with side mounted TB like the Ford setup

Either reposition the existing OEM/Aftermarket throttle
body, or introduce an additional degree of difficulty ...

Four of these:

Plus a pair of these: one for each cluster of runners

I made a sketch for a similar fabbed plenum I was going to weld up, I would have to see if I still have it,,,,

but bascially I was going to feed each stack with air from one infeed splitting into two feeds with the TB on teh side....

the thought was to have equal length air feed one from each side, with the air coming into the middle of the two intake stacks and then splitting into each stack..with equal length air paths

Intakes are for antoher day, I'm off to rid the world of one more ZF tranny

have no fear,, UNDER-Car is here!

Yes, more like this one but with one TB

- No plenum redesign or fabrication required
- No bell-crank mechanism required for throttle actuation
- No special provision required for TV cable actuation
- No need to redesign Air filter/MAF/Bellows componetry
- No need to adapt IAC operation for aftermarket throttle bodies
- No need to adapt IAC/MAF/TPS harnesses

- Esthetically more pleasing appearance

Oh, and it is generally cheaper to mount the TB there
in front than anywhere else.

The accessories at the front of a stock L98 engine present
some obstacles for unconventional routing of inlet air to
the throttle body.

Also, although not shown above, the master cylinder is
adjacent to the #1 & #3 runners.

Nothing impossible to overcome, just more head-scratchers
to solve along the way to completing such an undertaking ...

Always a better mousetrap to build, doesnt hurt to try new things.

Anyone know how far in to the plenum those runners go?

Was reading a topic on speedtalk about the individual carbs/TB vs a manifold with the plenum and J Sherman swore through tons of testing the manifold with the plenum made more power every time, must be something to it.

The pic of the individual TBs brought that to mind...
They sure look cool though.

On the HSR? Its runners terminate flush with the base of
the plenum.

The reason the tests show more power with a plenum is
explained by the influence of Helmholtz Resonance on
cylinder filling.

Using the aftermarket throttle body on an HSR plenum may
influence the Helmholtz Resonance to whatever extent that
volume of the plenum changes. An individual runner intake
with four of these throttle bodies would be a different
matter.

That would make sense to me if you had some semblance of a balanced firing order. But when you hit the 6,5,7 part of the cycle you're drawing 3 cylinders worth from one end of the intake. Hence the reason for a dual plane intake being the way it is.

I think the runners have to share a large plenum. Of course if the plenum is long and skinny, having the TB on the side helps it feed the entire plenum more evenly, but I don't see that issue with the stealthram.

With individual runners the underhood becomes your plenum, but I could see how it looses wave tuning at part throttle when the butterflies are in the way. Not an issue with the TPI.

As for plenum size changes, It would take a significant decrease in plenum size before anything became noticeable.

I would expect extending the HSR runners up into the plenum a bit with a nicely finished trumpet ends to help a little, assuming the plenum is tall enough to not restrict the height above them.
