If you haven't noticed, I love my 95 Monte Carlo with 200K... The car is a work horse. But if I had one complaint it would be about the brakes. Its the top model,... the Z34, yet the brakes are just trash. I have run though so many sets of brakes in the past two years that I could have probably bought another car for what I spent replacing them.

In the beginning of 08 I replaced, the front calipers, pads, rotors, sliders, and greased everything. The rear has been an issue too but not so much. The rear has all new hardware, new drums, and new pads.

Since the beginning of 08 I have driven approximately 35K miles. In that time I have replaced the pads, and the rotors 3 times (that's once every 10K miles or so). This is my fourth job now, 1/19/2009. The rotors warp just about every 5k miles, but i deal with it until the pads are shot. Chevy gave this car 2 piston calipers, nice thought/pretty cool, but the car stops about as fast a fully loaded freight train. I have tried all sorts of pads, nothing helps. Its like as hard as I push, the dam thing keeps going.

Ok, so today I pull all the shit apart again because the pads are squeeling like a bitch. This is what I find:
The rotors are shot, warped to hell. On the drivers side the pads are almost down to metal but the wear is very uneven. Turns out one of the two pistons on that side is FROZEN. How does this happen in just one year!?!??!?!?
And now for the icing. The passenger side.... HOW THE HECK DOES THIS HAPPEN??????????????????????????????????

DID I MENTION ITS SNOWING HERE????

That's ridiculous. If they need to be replaced that often, they should be held in place with Velcro.

I am serious when I say I don't understand how this could happen.

What you are looking at here is a sliding caliper. The dual piston side of the caliper has a pad that's been on there 10k or so, and looks brand new. On the other side.... the pad is down to metal. Both pads were obviously put on at the same time. How can this happen in a sliding caliper? It has to exert equal pressure because the caliper physically has to move. In any event, you would think the piston side would look worse, not the opposite side.

Dan, do you lube the slider pins when you do a pad change?

Sure do... Although I also lube the "special" bolts that hold the caliper brackets on and they still seize.

YEAH AS JEFFVETTE SAID MAKE SURE YOU LUBE THE SLIDE PINS AND CALIPER SLIDES ON THE MOUNTING BRACKET. ALSO MAKE SURE THE REAR BRAKES ARE ADJUSTED UP PROPERLY AND THE SELF ADJUSTERS WORK.

Rear brakes are all brand new... every purchasable part has been replaced.

I am usually pretty good about lubing on all accounts

The left caliper is frozen after just one year... autozone junk....

I've seen a few LS1 camaros with rusted slider pins. Braking sucks, and the pads wear as you describe.

Let me know if you want some GM calipers.

I appreciate it Jeff... I am going to try and get Autozone to Warranty the calipers tomorrow.

I wounder how much GM would hurt me for a new set of slider pins?

Yeah but as he said even if the sliders were welded solid, the pad on the piston side would wear out faster. Not the other one.

I agree,

I mean, the sliders are the factory ones,... so after 14 years they could use a replacement anyway. But I find it very strange that the piston side, the side that exerts force is the side that is not worn AT ALL, and the other side is almost to the rivets. This makes NO sense. I am totally baffled by this.

Well, like a true GM trained tech,... I guess I'll have to just throw parts at it until its fixed.

And then you know what Ill do if it doesn't work after I've spent all this money on it....
.
.
.
.
Well,... come on here and complain about it of course!!!

At this point I'd take it to one of the "lifetime warranty" brake places and let them replace the pads and rotors every year.

Well,

Its 5:47pm... still outside working on the brakes... fortunately its not snowing. I did however get Autozone to warranty everything, and that's down to every nut and bolt. Couldn't really ask for more. But the calipers are such junk. They gave me new slides. The slides were miss manufactured and didn't even fit. I had to reuse the old ones.

I swear if I have to do this again anytime soon I will find SOME WAY of fitting a set of C5 Calipers on there!!!!

Well, its 7:39... I'm finally done, and warming up in front of the fireplace.

Brakes seem to work...

First time ever, I have a check engine light. How the heck do you get a check engine light after doing brakes? Worst part is the car is OBD 1.5 and I don't have the scan tool. Ill just wait for it to go away. LOL

Here's a question. My brake lines are shot on the car. I took a look at them today, and they could use a replacement. Not bad enough that i believe it is the cause of my braking problems or lack there of; what I was thinking of doing is buying a set of Stainless Steel Braided brake lines off Ebay. I don't want to spend the high $$ for Russell or Earl on a car with 200K but was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the cheapo Ebay stainless brake lines?? I just want to make sure they are safe.

I would never ever buy brake lines from a questionable source.

Well, not for my own car anyways!

Is the check engine light related to ABS sensors or low brake fluid pressure caused by bleeding or letting the calipers suck air in?

That's very possible.

I just went out and took a ride. New Pads, Rotors, and Calipers. The brakes are better then they have ever been, thankfully. I wonder how long it will last?

During ride I stopped by Autozone and Advance Auto to see if I could borrow a scan tool. Neither had anything that would work. I believe my 95 Monte has the dreaded OBD 1.5 . I would hate to pay GM a "diagnostic fee" to tell me my gas cap is bad, or something stupid. What do I do in this situation. Is their anyway to pull codes?

Is the connector a 12 or 16 pin? If still a 12 pin (before changeover) you might be able to pull codes w/a paperclip, if 16 pin I believe you'd need the scanner....

Matthew,

I have both the OBDI Plug... from the 89 Vette... it's a device that induces the paper clip method.

I also have an OBD II Scanner. Neither seems to work on this car.

I'd have to take a look to be sure. Give me a couple hours and I will blaze the cold and find out.

I tried my OBD I Scan tool and it does not fit.

My OBD II Scan tool slides right over the plug, it just doesn't communicate with the ECU.

Boy did I bumble this one up. I must have my Monte confused with one of my other cars.

Its a 12 pin connector....

Here's the interesting part. There is only two pins in the who 12 pin connector. And when I paper clip them, nothing happens.

Scratching my head now ???

I have a sumpro scanner that has a 90 page manual and it has a button for the check engine light and it has a button to check the ABS for codes. It won't fit my style vette. 90-91 but it does alot of other GM veichles. Yours free if you pay shipping. I have never used it so have no idea if it works or how it works....It does not have a readout. It just makes the lights flash and it has the bookles that tells yout he codes for that specific veichle. Hopeyou get it worked out. FYI, when we used autozone pads on our explorer, they lasted about 6 months then they were shot. We did alot of driving though. Upgraded to Napa and they lasted longer. Just thought I would share that. Don't know anything about brakes but you have my best wishes finding the problem!

Here is the scanner I have but it's for chevys and not fords. It looks identical to that one. By Sunpro.

Hey NCKID,

Thanks for the offer, its much appreciated!!! I actually already have the Acutron Version of that scanner, but thanks for offering it up.

I decided to pull the battery cable for a little while this after noon. Once the light was off, I took the car out for a nice 30 mile ride though my area. No light yet. I figured I would give it a try. If it comes back on in a couple of days I will bite the bullet and take it to the stealership for a diag.

After 30 miles of driving I must say the New CMAX pads autozone offers far exceeded my expectations compared to the other junk they have sold me in the past. They are quite, and they stop quickly and smoothly. It should be interesting to see if I can get more than 6 months out of them.

Do you have the FSM for the car?

It should tell you how to get the codes out.

I've got the oddball OBDII computer running ODBI

I bought a scanner a while back that's been specially programmed to get the codes.

There may be some code out there on the net for getting it with a laptop.

I don't know if its worth the money to buy all the programming and cables for the laptop. The car is a 95 and its got 200K on it.

I took a look at the site you posted. Already saw it. Good information though.

I use all data, which is basically an online form of the FSM. The FSM always tells you to use a scan tool. Of course it does not specify which one. I am thinking the GM TECH I or II probably has fittings to go backwards and forwards. I know the Snap-on Red Brick I used to use had fittings for all makes and models, but I no longer have access to that.

I know autozone will pull OBDII codes.

I don't know if they do the earlier ones.

Time to buy a GM tech a beer.

I called Autozone today. I am surprised they can use a phone properly, I don't know if I want to trust them with a scan tool.
Seriously, I already called to find out. Explained in detail the situation. No such luck. 3 out of the 5 have never heard of the slang OBD 1.5 or the cross over; I was told my car is OBDII. The other two knew what I was referring to, but did not have the tool.

I will keep driving, and keep my fingers crossed. I have friends in the auto industry, I worked in it a couple years ago. But they are all in the wrong places or in the wrong dealerships. Called Audi and Toyota today hoping for a Snap-on Red Brick. Again, no such luck.

Ill keep you guys posted... Tomorrow I plan to fix the leaking cooler lines and put an new filter in the trans.

Well, its been almost a week, and I put about 400 miles on it. No check engine light, so I am pretty sure I am in the clear.

On Saturday I did my yearly transmission fluid flush, changed the filter, and refilled it. Hoping to keep the transaxle going another 30K. I don't have the time or the $$ to dump into it right now.

Plugs and wires are up next weekend. I have the Delco 30K's in there and I'm at about 40K since i changed them.

Hopefully the tank keeps on rollin.
