Here are some pics of the Hydrobooster I prepared and installed in Curt's '74. It was a fantastic installation to compliment his new engine from last summer, exactly one year ago this week.

I'll let him describe the differences he feels when stopping now compared to the old vacuum booster.

Here are the pics.

I'm gonna have to resort to Google, never heard of that. Cool-looking, though!

A Hydrobooster is a hydraulic power brake booster that assists the brakes using power steering hydraulics instead of engine vacuum.

Installing it is a simple matter of removing the vacuum booster, putting the Hydrobooster in it's place, and running pressure and return lines for the power steering fluid. It essentially gets installed after the pump and before the control valve.

Keep in mind C3s did not have the R&P steering yet.

More pics. Removed the seat so I could lay on my back looking up under the dash to get to the impossibly 4 nuts. Took 2 extensions, two wobbles, a deep wall socket, and a ratchet. The headband mounted flashlight helped too so I could see what I was doing.

The beer was the most important aspect of the project.

DB,

Pictures turned out good! I especially like the one of the two Bud Light Limes on the air cleaner. Again, thanks for all your help as usual.........

OMG! The difference is so amazing it's not even funny! I swear all I have to do is think about braking and that car wants to stand on its face. Before I would have to really be careful and brake much earlier as the old vacuum was no where near this responsive. My C4 can’t even come this close to this performance. I would highly recommend this upgrade to anyone who wants some outstanding stopping power especially with a high HP motor. Be sure to wear your seat belt as you can easily kiss the windshield with a small amount of pressure to the brake pedal………………! Good Lord DB, amazing upgrade. Thanks man!!!!!

Looks like a nice upgrade. What is the round-a-bout cost on that?

If you're wondering about a C4 it's not available through me at this time. Simply not enough room considering the vacuum booster in a C4 is pancake thin.

I usually charge $175 plus shipping for a Hydrobooster that is ready to bolt into the car. I don't offer the lines pre-made but I do offer all the information you need to make your own including a parts list, and a step by step installation guide all emailed with the tracking number.

The swap requires 3 major components. The Hydrobooster, a '77 or later master, and the pressure/return lines. In 'some' cases you need new hard lines from the master to the P-valve, and it's always a good idea to have healthy calipers and new flex lines on all four wheels.

The Hydrobooster can be installed in any power or manual brake car with power steering. In manual brake cars a different mounting plate is needed, which I have made here locally for a small additional charge.

Just to be clear, I don't do this as a business, and I don't advertise as such. It's more of a hobby.

Wow, I didn't know you were the one making them!

I'm not looking for the C4 - the C5 brake upgrade is awesome in itself. Just keeping it in the back on my mind for a future c3 project (if it materializes).

No problem at all, just let me know if you have any more questions. Send me your email address and I can send you a ZIP folder information packet with lots of pics and text files and diagrams to save for future reference.

Curt, how many RPOs are we gonna have to add to your car's history now?

RPO-VOR: Vortec Roller 355
RPO-HYB: Hydrobooster

LOL.

Trying to. Just waiting on some paperwork that I have no control over. Hoping it all comes together.

DB - it's the same as my screenname at aol.com.

Thanks for the email, DB - got it all saved.

Curt, if everything works out it will be a 79 project for my dad and me.

Good job on the Hydra boost!!! I still have the unit you sent me, and I picked up the right master cylinder. I still need to get the fittings and lines as per your list. One thing your notes don't point out is how many beers does it take to get the vacuum booster bolts out?

For me it was a simply beer before and a beer after job, but I have done it a few times in various cars and have some experience with the work to beer ratio. LOL.

It sounds like I should add this to my "to do" list as well.

DB, do you use new or rebuilt boosters?

Just let me know. I buy used units for the modification, and I test them to make sure they are of standard to be used. I stay away from high mileage units and if they don't test ok I send them back for another unit.
