I get a service engine light come on almost exactly at the same point along a certain route, on a highway just starting up a grade---it checks out as a code 32---i do not notice any change in performance and if I stop and shutoff the engine and restart the light remains off for the rest of the trip. Does not come on around town. It's a 91 L-98. Any ideas--anybody know the primary cause of a code 32-EGR??

I had that code on my 96'......purchased a new egr valve on ebay for about $40.00 thru "thepartsladi". Its an easy install, 15-20 minutes tops.

If its EGR, give yourself about 2 hours to be safe. Lots of b.s. stuff to remove to get to it.

Actually you can probably save a lot of time by not removing the runners.

Bad advice. That is the typical, "Shoot the messenger" mentality.
More often than not a code 32 is NOT cured by the replacement of
the EGR valve. Follow the trouble shooting steps in your FSM for a code 32,
and save yourself from throwing money at the problem. It is possible that
in your case you really do need a new EGR, but wouldn't you rather know,
before you waste your time and money?

Is it really necessary to stretch this whole thread with a 1024 pixel wide
picture of an EGR valve?

Normally, I would agree with you. But by 1991, the ECU had gotten smart enough to diagnose the EGR switch.

When the engine is keyed on, the ECU goes through a POST. That test will check for a problem with the switch. If the SES fires with a EGR code, then you know WHY the code has fired. If it happens at start up, it's the switch, if it happens after a drive, then it's the valve.

Now, with all of that said, I should have included an inspection of the vacuum lines, but gee, those are such a bitch to reach on the L98, you have to go through the same process to check them as you do to replace the damned valve!

Nah, you can change all the vacuum lines out without pulling anything apart, I've done in on a few L98s. There's a few HVAC lines and a cruise control line that are a bitch, but otherwise it's easy.

I can only speak from my expereince, so here's what's up with the above.
The SES light would come on after 4-5 minutes of driving at somewhat consistent speed (freeway driving). After clearing the code, driving back and forth the 7 minutes to the office, no SES. Back on the freeway, 4-5 minutes, SES. Having gone through the FSM tests and then some, I found the EGR valve was good (held vacuum for longer than required), the vacuum lines held required vaccum, checked the 2 electrical wires to the EGR vacuum solenoid all the way back to the ECM, finally re-read all the instructions again and found the solenoid did not preform as it was supposed to.
Now the down side is - - find a EGR vacuum solenoid - I have spent hours with the local a/p stores and their warehouses - there is another post regarding this - Standard is still up in the air if they are going to manufacture again, B/W is out of stock on the part number, as is Blue Streak and AC - J&D, if they have a used one, is "somewhere around $125.00".
All that said, re-read the FSM and all the test proceedures before throwing $ and time only to find the valve was ok and it's the ECM or the solenoid or a broken wire that's the culprit.
Good luck

interesting. I thought the 90 ECU was smart enough to find that.

I know the 92 is and I woulda sworn I had read that the 90 did the same thing.

I will check...

At least he'll end up with a new EGR valve, whether he needed it
or not. Let's hear it for throwing money at the problem. Any problem.

What did you do? Lose your right mouse button? (Right click, then select "properties" to check the pixel size). You couldn't SEE how that impossibly and unnecessarily wide picture made you pan across the screen to read a post?

Still searching for the part. Since the SES doesn't come on during the drive to work, I cleared the code and drive on. Hopefully, some mom & pop a/p store has one sitting on a shelf collection dust somewhere.

I think I have a used one. Is it the part that was held to the intake by one of the waterneck bolts? If so, I have one from an '89 L98 vette. I'll take a pic of the part and email it to you. If it is what you are looking for, I'll ship it to you. If it solves your problem then send me a paypal or money order for $25. If it doesn't solve your problem ship it back to me. If it doesn't work (it worked when removed, I think, I had no problems or ses light) just throw it away and let me know it was bad. PM me your email address if you are interested and I'll email you the pics of it.
