I have no idea what it costs to run my shop /month..I'm sure it would be scary. We still offer Woodworking, drafting, welding, auto mech (very scaled back). The State BOE is just as responsible for the deterioration of Vocational type classes as the local BOE. I fight all the time with our admin and counselors that they are pushing for everyone to get a "Regents" diploma. What this is, is baasically a course of study that bypasses the vocational classes. The idea of the "Regents" was that if the student would receive a "regents they would without question be accepted into any of the "Regent" schools (ie Kansas State U, Kansas U, Wichita State U, Fort Hays State U...state run Universities). Well my contention is this, and backed up by facts, You don't have to have a "Regents" diploma to attend a "Regent" school. One way is finish in the top 10% of the class or take the ACT and receive a 22 (36 is perfect)...or last but not least show them that you have the cash...they won't turn you down.

80% of our kids who graduate from our school go on to a state school and a majority don't make it past the first year, and end up in a vocational area or training. And if they have that special "Regents" Diploma, they have not had one course that will help prepare them.

OK I'll get off my soapbox....

Yes, that is too young. Younger than Brad, Tommy and I.

Well, we are still in lockdown today. The escapee apparently has been spotted in town, so we are still under alert. This guy is in jail for attempted murder of one of my former students (shot him in the back) , so he is considered very dangerous.

He overpowered a female jailer last night, beat her up some and took the keys and got out. Still on the loose as of 11 am.

Well, we are in semi-lockdown mode this morning. We have an escapee from the local jail and they are worried that he might try to make his way to the schools. So we are to run with the doors locked today. It's all the talk from the kids.

Me, I have had a little relapse this morning, I don't feel the greatest this morning. Man I wish I could shake this thing.

Matt, I was that way Sunday night. I went to bed but got up and put on some socks....I'm the same way, my feet get cold...I am cold all over.

We have a high percentage of kids that way. I feel for you, Ron. And I know, us old timers are all that's left, if/when we get out, it's only going to get worse.

Well guys we got the furnace fixed....
Wife called about noon and said the repairman was there. She said, He says it sounds like the vent is blocked. We have a 90+ efficiency furnace with a 3" PCV vent out the side of the house, so I'm thinking, "Dang, maybe a bird built a nest over the summer", since we turned it off last March. I call back at the end of my lunch break to find the repairman has had to cut the vent three times to find the obstruction....a tennis ball. I immediately know who is responsible, my five year old grandson.....earlier this summer we caught him throwing pine cones and rocks down the tube for the sprinkler system on-off valve...so many that I had to find something to dig them out so I could turn it on and off....aaaauuuuugh! Kind of funny now, but it got cold Sunday in the house down to about 59*. We are nice and comfortable this evening...$131 lighter in the checkbook.

Friday I was talking to a kid, helping him with drawing a plan for his required project when he calmly looks at me and says "May I go to the bathroom?" Me, "Yea, why?" Him "I think I'm going to throw up." Me, kind of excited "Well, heck yes, go to the bathroom, I don't want you throwing up in here."

When he comes back "Did you throw up?" "Yes, a little. "Did you make it to toilet?" "Yes." "Do you need to go home?" "No, I'll be OK." "Well, if you need to go again....don't ask, just go. You can tell me when you get back"

Not so sure this isn't what I have. For me it's been pretty mild. We have a ton of kids out as well. Our Superintendent has said he won't close school because of H1N1. His reasoning is too many of the kids won't stay home, go out and infect outside (of school) populace and it would spread faster throughout the county. This way the kids who get it bad stay home, and once they get over it they can come back. I can kind of see his thought process, but not sure it will hold water. My wife is also an RN and the county health dept administrator...she says it's nothing to take lightly. The Doctors offices aren't even testing for it anymore, they say "If you are sick, stay home".

I woke up this morning feeling a bit better, slept all night so that helped. This morning I'm a little lack-luster, but I'm not hacking so it's better. Got quite a few kids gone this morning as well.

Going to be a quick week I think, Jv football this evening, regional golf tomorrow, MS Football Thursday and Friday we are headed across the state to our daughters house in KC for the weekend. The weather is supposed to improve throughout the week. It was warmer this morning when I got up than it was all weekend, 36* right now.

Oh and when we went to turn on the furnace Saturday evening (it was the first time this year as our house is very well insulated) it would not come on, so we've been without heat at the house. The wife was supposed to call the repairman this morning.

I'm just going to veg out today.

We actually had a freeze this morning, low of 32* when I got up. TGIF. Kids are crazy today, must be the weather. Our Cross Country meet that we host was canceled for tomorrow. Good it's supposed to be cold wet (possible snow) and windy. I don't regret not having to stand around in that.

I bought a used Corsa Exhaust system for the 01, it got here yesterday...got to plan some time to put it on.

Morning guys.... Glad the rugrat is feeling better. My head cold has me down a bit. I'm still at school, but feeling the effects of the medicine. I have a kid putting some plastic laminate on today and we are using the flammable contact cement (the water borne stuff doesn't hold as well), so the whole shop smells...well lets just say, everyone is in a good mood.

Cool and cloudy here today and through the weekend.

Kind of a dreary day here to day. Tommy, have a good time and think of us who are still working. Don, keep us informed on how it goes. David it's nice to hear that you made the right decision. A move like that has to be a little scary. Matt you got lots of nights yet ahead that you'll be up.

Got to get back to the kids.

Last time I pad $55-60 for 2, 18v. Ryobi battery rebuilds.
They lasted 3 years, still work half ass.

Like I said, for the price of the Rockwell Li-on with batteries for life, I'm basically at the Rockwell price using & rebuilding Ryobis at 10 years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bill, they rebuild the batteries? So, if I took mine in they would rebuild them? They darn sure don't have the replacements on hand for my drill. I did buy a couple of batteries from them for my DeWalt drill at school. I was disappointed with their performance, within a year they were like the original ones.

Remember "cheapness" has to be kept in perspective. A high dollar tool can be "cheap". Maybe not in the initial purchase price, but in the amount of use it might be very cheap.

Several years ago I put a purchase order in for a $139 (corded) drill (a Porter-Cable 3/8" VSR). When my principal (a non tool person) saw the PO he rejected it. When I went in to find out why, the principal told me that he'd seen in the WalMart flyer a drill "exactly" like the one I put in for on my PO for $19.99. Well, they were both 3/8" VSR but it was not a Porter-Cable. He had already sent one of the custodial staff over to pick it up. That drill lasted a month (no exaggeration here), and they would not warrant it because it was used in a school shop. Well in the spring time I got my Porter-Cable drill (mixed it in with a bunch of other stuff) and that drill is still working to this day (20 years later). So which drill was cheaper?

My experience is you don't want a "cheap" one, Jim. Spend a little bit and buy a decent one...DeWalt, Milwaukee, Porter-Cable.

After I got home last night from golfing I had a phone call about a computer issue someone was having and I had a former student come by with jis computer for me to try and fix, which I got. This morning (early about 4) I woke up with a heck of a cough. It hurt like heck when I coughed...burned clear into my lungs. This morning, more of the same, no fever or anything else just coughing up junk.

Hey guys,

It was a crappy day sitting in reading seminars...same ole sh!t. Hope your first day was a good one David. Somebody told me this morning it looked like I needed some coffee to wake up...I told them, NOOOOOOOOO, I wanted to try and sleep through this junk. Tonight was the last night for this season's Men's night golf. Had a good time and they had hot wings to eat. The golfing wasn't too good but the wings were. Hopefully this week will roll right on by. We have a home football game Thursday night (our middle school ...my grandson) and Friday (our high school..I run the clock) and hosting a Cross country meet Saturday (which I pull tags at the finish), and a church meeting Weds night...it's going to be a busy week.

Well, guys I was out of town for the weekend at the nieces' wedding. It was a great time....consumed a few adult beverages and watched quite a few others "overdo" those same beverages. Today we came back home and I find the computer here was infected with some junk, so I spent most of the evening cleaning that up (I got it).

Tomorrow I'll not be on again...I have a reading conference that all of the staff must attend...like Ron I have 151 contract days until retirement. It's days like tomorrow that make it something to look forward to.

Hey Guys. Matt, don't do anything I wouldn't do.
I don't go to casinos...I never win anything, those places love me, because I could keep them open for a week. Now my in-laws, they win all the time.....ahhhh. Tommy, they would sell anything if the models were ugly...but you're right, she's above that.

We have a niece getting married this weekend, so we will be out of town for that.

That is so funny...but so true. I think I'll try to get my wife to watch that...she hates it when I am sitting doing "nothing" (which isn't very often).

That's one nice old table saw! I've only had a couple of kids been slightly cut by the table saw...but then again I don't have those gangbanger types who won't listen.

Teaching 16 year olds how to drive is close to teaching them how to run a table saw.

I got the first full month of school under my belt. Only 152 contract days left. I have to admit I'll miss being around the kids, but I won't miss the politics of education.

I agree, I'm sure he thinks your messing with him. That's too funny. And absolutely no ego trip being a teacher....

Ron, you've really ruined the guy... he doesn't know what to do.

Tell him to buy a new ZR1 that might beat you in a drag race. Or maybe he's just given up. That's just too funny.

Morning guys. Matt, that's just life..seems to kick you several times like that...oh well, be thankful that you can pay for it.

Weather here is just gorgeous. I don't think I've ever played golf in nicer weather than last night. Today is more of the same, only a bit on the windy side.

I have nothing special going on today, lots of kids out sick.

Can't wait for pictures of the 79.

The one of the guy firing the high-powered rifle....what a tool. And the one of the guy doing the free-fall from the box onto the folding chair...god help us if they are still in the gene pool.

They lost 2.9 billion in the market downturn, but they have way more than that.

Big news today here in Kansas is that the KPERS (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System), of which I fall under, is going bankrupt.......Well SHIT, this may be the end of my plan to retire at the end of this school year. I certainly hope that it's just a rumor....KPERS has fired out an email saying "Yes we've lost money, but everything is OK".

OK...like Tommy, I have a shape. In reality I feel like I'm in OK shape for my age. I'm 6'2" and weigh about 210. Can I run a mile? Nah, but it's because of bad knees (HS sports injury). I would really like to get down to 185-190, that's where my Dr. would like to see me.
