I agree to a fault. Given most people's resources, the price may be almost fair.

But they just look like the Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges I use in the Chevelle (which can be had relatively cheaply) stuffed in a piece of folded sheet metal. Not necessarily bad.

But if you're serious about this and want to get a little more trick, buy the gauges from Summit. Then bring your Vette down to Virgil's and we'll fashion something out of billet. If the timing is right, Virgil ships to anodizing a couple times a month and we can throw your stuff gratis. You even get your choice of colors, as long as it's black.

Yeah, it's a Ford. But it's a car for the car guys. I thought you might enjoy.

This was a fully functional and running car before being put away for college. Hasn't been driven since 2001.

It was covered and garaged, but neither run nor maintained. So my task is to go through all the soft goods, fluids, etc and ensure it is roadworthy.

A few more pics of it here:

Ah, no... Bob's Big Boy Broiler, on Firestone at Old River.

Oh, sounds like maybe the old location oh Johnie's Broiler, the site of many a movie location (American History X, The Game, Matchstick Men, Heat, many, many others). Haven't been to Downey in half of forever. Didn't realize they did anything with that site.

Nonetheleast, I digress. Beautiful cars!

Simply because in an active system the tweeter is a stand alone driver with it's own dedicated channel. In a passive system, yes the drop off is lessened, but the tweeter is paired with a driver on the same channel. Therefor there isn't anything it needs to be time aligned with that the processor doesn't account for, such as other driver's in the system.

Not all active, electronic crossovers have time alignment correction circuitry; in fact very few do.

Time alignment problems are borne out of transducer location, regardless of filtering method (passive or active) and must be corrected either by "padding" the passive network, or using a DSP in an active system. Or ultimately, correcting speaker placement.

Therefore, placement is still crucial. And as I stated before, active crossovers may actually worsen the effects of poor transducer placement.

The easy fix is to build a stroked big block, put the top down, and open the exhaust cutouts. It removes the want for time alignment, really.

Sorry, I have to beg to differ on a couple of points.
Quote:

Durango_Boy wrote:
If the tweeter is powered directly from the amp, and it's a true active component, location doesn't matter.

Not sure where your reasoning is here. If anything this is less true with a dedicated amp channel and active crossover. Active crossovers tend to have steeper roll-offs (12, 18, or 24 dB per octave), whereas passive crossovers have more shallow slopes (think 6dB or 12dB/octave) lessening the effects of equidistance.

Quote:

Durango_Boy wrote:
For good imaging and true quality sound, you want the tweeter within 12" of the driver it's paired with.

Distance between the individual drivers is not nearly as important time-alignment of the sounds coming from each. That is, if the location of the tweeter is equidistant to that of the midrange/midbass, relative to the listening position, the different frequencies should arrive at the ear at the same time, regardless of the distance between each driver. However, since spatially the brain can detect the direction from which sound emanates, it is still best to keep the distances between drivers minimal.

To the OP:
Tweeters are one piece of audio equipment I will never skimp on. Get a high quality piece with good off-axis response and pair it with midrange or midbass drivers of similar quality and you'll be in aural bliss.

In the C5, I installed 1" Dynaudio domes in each door (where one is pointed at my knee, the other pointed toward the passenger's knee) and listening to the system you'd swear the tweeters (and midranges) were mounted up in the dash at the base of the windshield.

The track is available for rentals, but I'll just try to get out earlier next time.

Since the track operator originally told me there weren't a lot of participants pre-registered, I pretty much lollygagged getting out there.

But we got turned away.
I talked to the guy who runs the track a couple times this week. He said not enough participants signed up for the scheduled brackets so the track would be open for test-and-tune. So come on out and run what I brung.
Well, the place ended up selling out and we got their too late.

Either way, I was a bit disappointed. I'd have made better numbers with the Holley 850 or even a Demon and a Victor Jr intake. But at least I know how to work on the Eddy carb. I'm too busy to take up carburetor tuning these days. Anyway, I made myself feel better by laying some rubber down Imperial Highway on the way back to the office. After all, I don't drive the Dyno printouts to work everyday.

Oh, did I mention there's gonna be a Beatles tribute band?

This was literally two hours ago.
A few specs:
496cid 10:1 forged rotating assembly, roller valve train, Brodix Race Rite oval ports, RPM Air Gap Intake, Edelbrock Thunder Series 800cfm carb; 2800 stall on a TH400, 3.31 12-bolt

I'm going to 1/8th mile drags Saturday (my first ever run), I'll post up those numbers this weekend.

That's not my mohawk.
Resized Image

Pulls 2, 6, and 7 (HP & TQ vs MPH).
Pull 2 was before tuning.
Pull 6 was after tuning running though 3" exhaust and 40-series Flowmasters
Pull 7 was after tuning and cut-outs opened right after the header collectors
Resized Image

Pull 5 (HP & TQ vs RPM).
Resized Image

Run 7 was my final pull, we forgot to graph this pull versus RPM.
The graph showing vs rpm was pull 5.

Yes, I did multiple times, along with the fuel pump being disabled. After replacing the relay, haven't had an issue since (about 6 months now).

BTW, this car does not have a CLB installed. So Matatk's comment about removing the relay for CLB installation might mean you have a different issue altogether if you have the CLB.

Good luck!

It's been a while, and I don't recall exactly how I figured it out. But I encountered this in my brother's (formerly my) C5. There is a relay installed as part of the GM recall (p/n and location varies by model year and revision of recall you had done) that is wired into the circuit such that it sends a signal to the BCM "telling" the BCM that the column is unlocked. This relay is installed electrically in place of the actual column lock and if it fails or starts to fail (as was my case) the BCM will think the column is still locked and will cut the power to the fuel pump.
"Pull key, wait 10 seconds" allows the system to reset itself and try to set the relay to the correct latched/unlatched state.
By the way, said vehicle was also a 98 A4. Faulty relay was "installed" (actually tie-wrapped) to the steering column behind the knee bolster. But I've also read that the relay can sometimes be found in the passenger footwell near the fuse panel.

Hope this helps.

I know a lot of cars - mine included - photograph better than they actually look in real life. But I saw Andy's Vette last night and it looks absolutely fantastic.

If you're anywhere in the continental United States, you must make the road trip out to SoCAL to see it. I believe Andy and Tamiza will serve you some soup or something if you do!

"Completed" is a relative term. This motor just adds to the latest incarnation of the car. I've posted pics before; I'll have to dig them up later. But the car pretty much still looks the same as it did before I yanked the motor.

But pending the arrival of a new transmission, I hope to actually drive this car this weekend.

(Oops, I forgot to order tall valve covers. My GM Performance covers don't clear the roller rockers. I thought I lucked out when my buddy had these old Holley covers laying around. Too bad, they don't fit either.)

A few numbers:
4.31 bore X 4.25 stroke (496 c.i.d.)
10.0:1
Cam duration 243/257 @ .050; lift .570/.554 int/exh

All forged rotating stock. Estimated 607HP / 570 lb.-ft., but I'll be choking it with an Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake for a few weeks. HP/TQ numbers above are estimated for a Victor Jr.
I'm actually considering an RPM Air Gap which (surprisingly to me) should bump those numbers up.

Yeah, it's a my daily driver.

Maybe MS decided to leave that setting off the 120Gb model. I vaguely recall it being there on my old 30Gb Zune. And like I mentioned Wednesday, my software was just updated a couple weeks ago.

All I have under Settings>Music is "shuffle", "repeat", and "Artists." I've looked at all my settings... not there.

It seems to me "short circuting the battery" [sic] would only bypass the battery rendering the laptop without power. I wonder if you need to use the red wire or the blue wire???

Fusible links, the in-line, wire type - (not the fuse-looking widget Kevin posted) - can be had at some of the chain stores (Auto Zone here in SoCAL). Don't ask the clerk, he'll try to point you to a fuse. But the fusible links are in the electrical section right near the fuses, and just look like a piece of wire in the bubble packs.

I have replaced them in the past without ever finding any apparent short or overload condition that caused the initial failure.

Call Mark Savitske at scandc.com.
He's a dealer for SPC and really knows his stuff. Just be prepared to spend a half hour on the phone. Tell him Nelson V. from Team Chevelle sent you (probaby won't give you any special discount, but it'll earn me brownie points).

My thoughts..

Your rear end up to the task?

Also... why forged? More rotating mass that doesn't sound like you will be needing at that compression ratio.

Unless she is gonna get some spray... you know.. while you're in there :D
The 12-bolt posi seems okay but leaks; so it will also soon get a visit. My brother is planning to romp my car down Oceanside Boulevard as soon as it runs. So if I lollygag and end up breaking it after I build the motor, then I'll know for certain it needs work.

As to the forged internals... I don't plan to spray. But I also never planned poke and stroke this motor either. Who knows? I also don't plan to blow it either. But when more of these unplanned events occur, and they will, I'll be ready.

Update 7-31-2008

Didn't get much done last couple weeks except actually making money to pay for my loot. I did do a little wrenching last week, but forgot my camera at my brother's house. So this update is a week late. Hope this will keep your appetites whetted.

Here I am tearing into the old rotating stock. OK, yes I am flexing for the camera:

I also did some suspension work. The adjustable, upper control arms were already run before on the car but failed.

The red sleeves are made out of 1" hex aluminum stock. I had some coilovers in the car and I pre-loaded them incorrectly, leading to failure of one coilover, as well as the hex aluminum (see below). So I made new adjusters for the control arms. New stock is 1-1/8" Chrome-Moly. I had them nickel plated because it was free. Also added some Cherry Red Krylon to the previously rusty cross-shafts.
(The acrylic blocks in the background are my sidework that are helping to fund the goodies.)

Next on my to-do list...
This weekend I intend to finish tearing down the short block so I can send it for boring and decking when the new rotating mass arrives (hopefully next week or so).
Also, planning to hang the suspension back onto the frame.

Lastly, after much hemming and hawing, I finally ordered the new rotating assembly last week. I got:
Callies Dragonslayer Crank with 4.25" stroke
Compstar H-beam rods
SRP Flat-top pistons
Everything forged. Combined with my 115cc combustion chambers in the RaceRite heads, I'm looking at 8.9:1. Very pump gas friendly. Force-feed friendly. Next week, I'll sharpen my pencil and finalize the grind with my camshaft vendor.

To be continued....
