Got my car back today

There's a body shop in town that I use. The owner and I have an understanding, I'm patient, and he gives me a break. He had my car for about 3 weeks, he had a rush of business right after I took it in. I took it to him, I had 2 new rocker panels, but they were from a bronze car, mine is white. I also had an inner wheel well cover on the passenger side. The passenger side rocker was messed up, and the skirt had a hole that had been patched. I had 2 new outer window sweeps. And I wanted him to look at the lock actuator on the passenger side while he had the door apart for the sweeps. I also asked him to look at the lower bumper in the rear, it has some touch ups, and maybe paint it.

So, basically I supplied the parts, and wanted the rockers painted and replaced, sweeps, and wheel well.

He painted and replaced the rockers. Found some old style clips that were missing on my car. Put in the wheel well. Sweeps are in. For the actuator, he had one, and replaced it. For the rear bumper, he said putting more paint on it would be asking it to crack, and I should address it if I ever want to seriously paint the car, (the paint's good, doubt I will paint it anytime soon).

Total cost? $423. He didn't even charge for the actuator. I know these aren't big things, but I see those things every time I look at the car. When I saw it, he had just washed it, it was beautiful! The darn thing has never looked so good. It's times like this that make up for some of the other stuff you deal with having an old car.

You touch on one of the many problems of the "healthcare" bill. Lawsuits drive doctors out of business, they drive up costs due to doctors practicing defensive medicine. Drugs cost more due to lawsuits for any problems, and on and on. So, you'd think some form of tort reform was in order? Never even mentioned. A huge potential cost savings wasn't even considered.

Some argue that a huge reform had to be crammed through, there was no other way. That's stupid. What about incremental reform? What was the rush? Much of what's going to happen to us, happens in 2012 and beyond. The 2500 page bill could have been broken up into bite size, digestible pieces. Did the government really need to take over the student loan program as part of healthcare reform?

And honestly, how can a legislative body pass a bill they didn't read?! Even Ms. Pelosi didn't know what was in the bill! That's very much like going to a dealer, telling them you want a car and having them say: "You have to buy it before we can show it to you." You don't know if it's an ATV, motorcycle, Corvette, truck or a tank, but you have to buy it to see what you're getting. Pure insanity.

Nothing wrong with that. As long as you realize you're spending it to get exactly what you like.

I do like the early C4 tail much better. Much more angular with the classic round lights.

Ok, that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say, intentionally. Sure G. W. Bush came up with some real stupid stuff, but most of it was just stumbling, the kind of dumb stuff we all say on occassion, a mistake.

Ms. Pelosi meant every word of that. How or why that didn't get turned into a media spectacle is approaching criminal. Ok, that's the preamble.

Now, for your viewing pleasure, finding out what's in it:

http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/05/small ... h_care_tax_change/?hpt=C2

It appears that in an effort to collect more taxes to pay for the healthcare bill, in 2012 a 1099 will be required for just about any transaction a business makes.

Arizona is really catching a bad rap. They're trying to do something with a really bad problem. Now they're catching holy heck from every liberal within 3000 miles. I heard a solution to Arizona's problem today:

Meet illegals at the border. Give them a travel voucher good for one way travel to, San Francisco, Denver, or New York City. When the "guest" selects his or her destination, give them a map with a list of services available to "undocumented workers".

It would be cheaper for Arizona in the long run, and it would allow places that have expressed outrage to welcome some new residents.

Not sure what I think of the potential story. But I do know it's sad that when it's a Democrat, any investigative reporting is done by the likes of the National Enquirer, or Drudgereport. The "mainstream media" won't touch this until/unless they have to.

How many times have you seen someone post something that's easily answered with Google? Go to www.lmgtfy.com put in the search, and send them the generated link. The link leads to a page where it animates the google search, and asks, "Was that so hard?"

Ok, an example:

How many Corvettes were made in 1996?

Link:

http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=How+many+Corvettes+were+made+in+1996

A way to be helpful and a wise guy all at once.
I like it.

"Just wait till you guys get speed cameras!"

Won't be long and they'll be everywhere. If safety was really the motive, there's an easy answer. A series of transponders and cars equipped with the appropriate computers. Make it so a car just can't exceed the broadcast speed, and stops could be enforced by transmitted codes.

And how can our collection of criminals we call a government get away with this stuff? Well, a large percentage of people just don't pay attention. Another segment of the population will buy anthing as long as it's "good for you" or "for the children". Then there are those like me, beaten down, so I accept it, and rather than do anything, I just whine!

IF it's running right. I'm a highly skeptical person, especially when it's a craigslist offering.

$2.2 k for the motor.
Then a tranny rebuild.
Then a swap of the D36 for a D44.
Then ...

I'm finally to the point where I'm spending money on my car for discretionary repairs. Took it to the body shop I use to have the outter window sweeps replaced. Also bought a used passenger side rocker, going to have that painted and replaced.

This is good stuff.

Finished my taxes on Sunday. You know how they say 47% of Americans don't pay taxes? I'm covering for one or two of them. And tax year 2010 is going to be worse for me! I just started playing with stocks, and I learned that if you make a few bucks, Uncle Sam wants them!

Going to be 65* here today. I get to drive my Corvette to our first league round of golf. That makes today a good day!

The seats are fine. When I saw what it was doing, I scrubbed most of it off. If it were really dye, there'd be no scubbing off.

The only thing hurt is my wallet, and Ecklers business. I won't buy from them again.

I dyed my steering wheel and the results are awesome. So, I thought I'd buy some leather dye, since my driver's seat has some wear on the bolster. My interior is flame red, for an 87. Specified that, bought the kit.
First thing I noticed is the kit looks like something a 3rd grader would put together with a chemistry set and his Dad's PC to make the labels. And it worked just about as well.
It's not a dye, it's a paint. And what's worse, the color match is not there, it's about 10 shades off, it's kind of a pink.
The kit is open and used, I have no shot of getting anything back from Ecklers, but I'm warning you guys, if you're looking at dying your seats, stay away from Ecklers. I'm very surprised and disappointed that Ecklers didn't do any quality control on this stuff. I guess Ecklers figures buyer beware. I figure I won't be using Ecklers.

I'm out in front of this one, by accident. I had braided lines put on the car, while some other work was being done. So, they flushed the fluid and put in "high performance" fluid, whatever that is?

Anyway, I'm curious, if you were to flush a car's brake fluid, what would be the method you'd use? The way I'd imagine doing it would use a lot of fluid:

Suck the stuff out of the master, replace with new fluid. Then, go to each wheel, open the bleeder and pump the brakes until you get new fluid coming out?

Given that the transmission has 80k on it, and hasn't been rebuilt, I guess I'll risk it. If it runs properly for 10k more miles then croaks, I'm ok with that. I've been told more than once don't expect more than 100k on a 700r4 without a rebuild.

My spare tire carrier looks a little tired, (pun intended). It's more of a dull blackish then a real black. Two questions:

How hard is it to get that thing off?

And, can it be painted, if so, what paint is good to use?

Thanks.

My transmission pan was leaking, so I took it to the shop I use and had them fix it. They uaed Amsoil transmission fluid. Amazing difference. My overdrive is a little tired, the car has almost 80k on it. Now, I don't even notice an issue. Used to be that it had a dead spot around 38 mph, and you had to kick it down to get acceleration. No more. Not only that, but the shifts are firmer. The car will now reliably chirp the tires going into 2nd at WOT. I didn't expect anything other than a leak fix. I guess sometimes you can catch a break with these cars! I highly recommend Amsoil, ymmv.

I think a good used one would be ok. My driver's side one is used!

It's not that I don't have the money, but why spend it on small stuff when I can save for something else?

I did that. It's just tired. Not much kick when it's activated.

The passenger door lock actuator on my 87 is real tired. It works, sometimes. I was looking at getting a new one, and wow, those things are expensive. On ebay they were $89, but they're aren't any there right now. At Ecklers, it's $92, I think.

I can live with it as it is, but would kind of like to fix it. Any suggestions on a source? And why the heck are they $29 for an 84 and $90 for an 87?

Since it's your boss, only you know if it would be kosher to take it, and turn around and sell it.

I don't know much about the 3000GT, but I always thought they were nice looking cars. I'd look at it, and if it was in good shape, I'd put a new transmission in it and have fun.

Don't use brake clean on them after painting!!

It'll take the brake dust, and the PAINT right off.

Topcoat with clear engine enamel to prevent that.

Wish I had known that when I had them off!

Dale, sorry I was giving you some bad info. I even did a 'google' on changing an 87 mast and what I found was obviously wrong as well. Glad Ray was able to provide the correct way to fix it.

No problem. You were trying to help, I appreciate it.

On the early C4s ('84-'87) the mast is not replaceable from the top as it is on the later ('88-'96) cars. The black bezel will not pop or pry out on these early cars. It is held in by threads and the bezel nut below the body panel. Dale, you'll have to remove the antenna assembly to replace your mast. Easiest method is to jack up driver side rear, remove wheel and inner fender. Should then be able to remove antenna and replace the mast on the bench.

Thanks Ray!

Dale, it is hard to tell from the picture, other than that you are working at the right spot. Will the mast nut socket fit inside the bezel and contact the mast nut? That is what needs to happen.

No. The opening is only big enough for the antenna mast itself to fit though. I think Matt is right, the black thing has to come out, but it's not soft rubber. It's pretty rigid, and doesn't give.

Weird, I can almost remove mine with my fingers. It's pliable rubber. I was gonna say pry up with something plastic but sturdy. If you're gonna pry I'd definitely tape it off and use some towels around the area just in case.

Mine isn't any kind of soft rubber. It feels more like the stuff the seat backs are made of.

Duplicolor brush on kit. Did lots and lots of wirebrushing and brake cleaner as prep.

If it's the same as my 89, it's a rubber piece that is just compressed in there. It has a line-up tab on the underneath side. Should be able to gently pry it out.

A screwdriver? I had a hook and was pulling on it, straight up, and the whole car was coming up, but the black thing didn't give. I was kind of afraid to really yank on it.

Rainy day, pics from inside the garage, so they aren't the best, but it's something to do. I also painted the rotor hats, and bracket black.

As nice as they are, I'd prefer to save the money, and buy a nice 96 LT4. You can get a good one for $15k or less.

Trailblazer must use that. My brother's Trailblazer has had lots of taillight problems. Even a recall, I think.
