Yeah, what he said. I just checked mine because I have the drivetrain out and they're tight as a drum. The car has well over 100k miles. And some of those were fairly "spirited" miles...

I'm not saying yours don't need it, it's worth checking. But don't replace them just to replace them if they're still good.

I have the solution to your problem, a sweet 383 LT1 ready to drop right in

If this isn't resolved by next week I can try to lend a hand, I'm in China right now so "local" is not the case. I will admit, however, that I'm no expert on the extraneous systems such as HVAC and cruise control as I "fix"them by removing them.

Are you sure all cylinders are firing? Down on power and a vibration at speed sounds to me like a misfiring cylinder...

Oh man. I loved the Audi / Peugot rivalry that was going at LeMans.

Maybe Bently will come back. I saw this classic from 2003 in Shanghai last time I was there...

That's the way the car is normally, the nose is just a shell that slides on or off in 5 minutes. It's only held on by two pins and some dzus fasteners...

Not a bad idea to make some bars.

Introducing....

The new C4 dragstrip package!

The car is not on jackstands, there's just that much clearance in the front now. I think I'll keep it like that.

IMO, hell yes. I was "old school" scammed about ten years ago, someone got ahold of my check book and wrote a bunch of checks and cleaned out my account. I received my money back from the bank almost immediately, so almost "no harm, no foul". I asked if they were going to prosecute, and they said it's not even worth the money to prosecute if the stolen amount is less than $10k. IIRC it was about half that.

Anyway, I had the returned checks, with a FINGERPRINT on one of them (remember when banks used to do that?). I took it to the police and they dindn't want anything to do with it. I can't believe I handed them a fraudulent check with a fingerprint and they didn't even look it up.

My point? I still have those checks. I still think about it occasionally and it still makes me angry. I would have then, and still would today pay a good amount of money for those bastards to go to jail, even if for only a few weeks.

I see a lot of 5.3's but am avoiding it for one main reason - resale. Aside from the obvious reliability and tunability improvents the LSx will give me it will also keep the car relevant.

When it's time to start building the blue car and I have to let this one go I might actually get a decent price. The smaller bore LS's don't carry the same clout as a motor from a newer 'vette. Even if it's actually from a Camaro!

Of course the hope is that I don't ever have to sell her, there's too much of my blood and sweat in there. Which makes it kinda smell bad...

Oh yeah, that thought keeps crossing my mind...

My buddy had a street F-car and a race F-car. Over the season a few years back he kept needing parts for the track and pilfering them from the street car. One night he took the gf out for dinner and decided to take the hotrod instead of the truck, forgetting he had stolen numerous parts from it over the preceeding months...

The calipers almost fell off when he first hit the brakes, turns out the upper caliper bolts were two of the many parts missing.

I can just see myself going out to drive the blue car next spring and wondering why it won't start and the front end sits up so damn high.

Great question. I don't know yet...

I really want to do an LS2, but most likely it will be an LS1 for two reasons: they're much easier to find and I think the LS2 will have too much power. And of course and LS6 is never out of the question.

The car will probably be at least 100 lbs lighter after this, and I already have trouble with my pwr/wt ratio for my class.

The end of an era. I finally initiated the project and began the removal of the heart of black beauty for the last 18 years...

Things are behind schedule, two months overseas will do that to you. There are going to be a lot of nice parts popping up for sale over the next few weeks, keep an eye out and look at it as donations to charity, not as paying for 'vette parts

Here are a couple of photos from yesterday.

Some blue machinist's paint for marking things.

I don't punch my rods and main caps, I just scratch it in with a pick. To each his own...

File to fit rings are the way to go for a track motor, but man do they take forever the first time - or 8 times. They still take me forever since I've only done it a handful of times. I'm sure guys like Will can get it right in a tenth the time.

Don't forget the moly grease and assembly lube.

I assume you have an engine stand already?

What went wrong was ESPN royally fucked us. Last year at Sebring, on the Wednesday BEFORE the race, ESPN changed the game. The original plan had it so that we could watch on the web, live, on ESPN360, or, on www.americanlemans.com. On that Wednesday, ESPN killed the simulcast on www.americanlemans.com. Top that off with most ISPs not supporting ESPN360 (bandwidth hog for smaller ISPs), we got boned and boned hard.

Interesting. I didn't know the whole story. I do know that I had a similar experience to you trying to get my service provider to show the races. I tried to get ESPN3 and kept getting the "it's coming to your cable provider" message, tried to watch through my Xbox because that was supposed to be an option, and after a few hours and a few tries I didn't see a second of coverage. The chopped down races that were on network TV were a joke, but I never talked to any non-race fans to see if their attempt to involve casual fans worked. I doubt it, but I can't begin to guess what could make racing interesting to non-racers. That's why I'm not in marketing.

At the end of the day, I stopped caring about ALMS. I wasn't that interested, anyway, since Audi and PSA stopped racing here; I don't care about a bunch of Mazdas. GT racing was getting really good with BMW and Corvette back, but I decided it was an acceptable loss. I like Rolex, all three classes, so that was enough racing to keep me entertained and therefore that's what I watch.

Plus, they brought Speed GT back. It's a little silly right now, but hopefully they'll figure it out and it will be worth watching in 2013.

My guess is that GM / Corvette diteched ALMS when it lost it's TV contract. No sense spending millions on a program that only reaches the masses via posters and 30 second commercials.

DP is still televised LIVE and in it's entirity, even the Daytona 24 (minus a few hours overnight).

All I can say is that I am fully erect...ALthough I hope one of the teams campainging one paints it yellow in the spirit of the C5.R and C6.R.

I root for Suntrust (who wouldn't root for Angellelli?) and they're switching. Life is good.

It also seemed to help if you could "season" the bearings for 1000 miles or so before tracking the car. However that is not possible for lots of us who's cars stopped being street legal years ago.

If you track your C4 on R compound tires you will have bearing problems. There is no cost effective solution out there.

Kevin started the questions five years ago on the CF, nothing has changed. The tapered experiment proved to be a bust, this is one of many failures from folks who hoped it would work and found out it did not. James and Matt C. proved it in a matter of days.

If you track your C4 rear bearings are a wear item. No brand name bearing will save you.

The tenth guy to try making a rebuildable rear bearing (Brian was probably the first) just popped up a few months ago. He succeeded, but guess what? It ended up costing within 10% of a new one. Labor to remove and replace is unchanged, so why bother?

I am a broken record but I speak the truth.

My lord, 36 lb injectors on a 383? I thought 32 was a bit large.

I don't know your whole set up but I doubt that's going to fix it. Did you make any changes to the airflow? Maybe it's getting too much air now. My LT1 ran lean last summer due to a TB swap.

Oil temps might also be an issue. If you are running in the 300• range your oil is thinner, and therefore pressures will drop.

I've NEVER had an oil issue with my 383 in 6 years. I have a Canton pan and accusump. The verdict is out on the accusump, some like it and some say it can cause motor failure if the oil pump is busy filling the sump up after it discharges and can't keep pressure.

I'm selling my whole setup once I get it out of the car. If you are interested in the pan or any parts let me know. Or even a complete longblock. The thing's bulletproof, but I'd put different heads on it since they were repaired this year due to my own stupidity.

The C4 is getting an LS.

Tommy, a few weeks ago you posted an anecdotal example of the "tax the rich" system of proposed government. It involved some buddies who get together for beers and split the bar tab. I was trying to remember the details, but was missing a few points...can you bump that post or repost the story here? I coulnd't find it in the history...

I love cars with all gas and no flash.

As for the cost of museum delivery, did you guys know that you can PAY $5000 to go help build your Camaro engine. Yup, you pay and then help build it.

It's fantastic. They are a self proclaimed "leaderless protest", and they don't know what they are protesting. All I've heard is that they are protesting corporations. Seriously?

While there has been a lot of insane corporate BS, such as CEO's getting bonuses from failing companies, corporations are not, in and of themselves, "evil". I'd like to see statistics on how many Americans are employed by corporations. My guess is over 60%.

If we can't have corporations, do they want everyone to be their own private company? Or is it just the big ones we don't like. What if I become succesful in my private endeavors and am able to hire some people and incorporate. Am I now one of the bad guys becuase I succeeded in achieving the "American Dream?" You remember, right? The thing we used to be so proud of?

Now it's a socialist dream, I guess. I will work and succeed and share with you. Just because.

Check out this video. I tailed a good buddy of mine around the track last weekend to get some video for him. He is an Alfa Romeo freak (although I think he prefers the term "Alfa nut"). He tracks this one (daily driver) while his other one is getting caged. This is a 1970's Alfa something or other on ridiculously bad street tires and stock everything else. He's having a ball in a car that might qualify for mother waddles. In the second lap you could fit a whole 'nother car in between the tires and fenders on some of the left handers.

So before someone asks you to go to the track and you don't becasue you have to upgrade your brakes or your turbo or your whatever, think of this guy and how much fun he's having...

My buddy had the PBR calipers on his '87 Mustang when we used to go to the track years ago. Hard to believe that the C4 brakes were actually considered an UPGRADE!

Sigh...good times.

Thanks to those who went digging through their garages in search of pads.

And HPS on the track? I didn't like them. HP+ were pretty decent, though. Ran them on the M3.

Geez, all you guys argue with me when I tell people C4 brakes are fine for beginners. Now you're telling me I was right?

Say it! Say I was right!

I'm not sure if I've earned it or not, but if anyone has some used track suitable front pads for a stock late model C4 (Lt1 car) that they'd give up for free (I'll pay shipping) please let me know.

A buddy of mine is tracking his car for the first time ever, I'd like to have a decent set of pads for him; but as a newb I don't see the need to make him spend $200 on a set of track pads he may only use once.

Thanks in advance, gurus...

I just dug up this thread because I thought it was for the movie "Drive" that just came out.

That movie was sooo bad I was sure this cheesefest was what I remembered.

Good for a laugh, anyway.

And Bill, yes, you can drive any of my cars as long as it's a sweet chase scene and I get to drive your purple one in pursuit.

Some of you guys are missing a critical point. The common misconception is that it's all the Government, or "the corporations" or (whatever ominous entity of the day) that is doing this. That "they" are pushing more and more of this on us. While some of these things are related, the vast majority of these features, specifically in the area that is dearest to us, car stuff, are dictated by US.

People WANT to have everything done for them. They WANT to be told what movie to see and what theater to see it and what to eat and how to get there. They have very little interest in doing any work or making any decisions for themselves. Most people can't find a new place these days without a Nav system. Even google maps is too much of an inconvenience now.

The OEM's are trying to do one thing: make money. They (we /I) develop systems that will sell cars so we/I get a paycheck. If nobody bought OnStar it would have gone away a long time ago. People like it. So suddenly they want this fancy gadget in their car that tells them what to do, but they don't want there to be any negatives? It's not free for GM to have hundreds of OnStar operators on call 24/7. They pay for it by getting funding from advertisers, etc. OnStar is one of a hundred examples of this.

Ever heard the phrase "you made your bed?" Now we don't want to lie in it, and so it must be some kind of government conspiracy. It can't be *gasp* OUR fault.

Can it?

Bill, just move the house somewhere that it doesn't rain. Would be easier than what you're going through.
