The end of an era. I finally initiated the project and began the removal of the heart of black beauty for the last 18 years...

Things are behind schedule, two months overseas will do that to you. There are going to be a lot of nice parts popping up for sale over the next few weeks, keep an eye out and look at it as donations to charity, not as paying for 'vette parts

Here are a couple of photos from yesterday.

Great question. I don't know yet...

I really want to do an LS2, but most likely it will be an LS1 for two reasons: they're much easier to find and I think the LS2 will have too much power. And of course and LS6 is never out of the question.

The car will probably be at least 100 lbs lighter after this, and I already have trouble with my pwr/wt ratio for my class.

Oh yeah, that thought keeps crossing my mind...

My buddy had a street F-car and a race F-car. Over the season a few years back he kept needing parts for the track and pilfering them from the street car. One night he took the gf out for dinner and decided to take the hotrod instead of the truck, forgetting he had stolen numerous parts from it over the preceeding months...

The calipers almost fell off when he first hit the brakes, turns out the upper caliper bolts were two of the many parts missing.

I can just see myself going out to drive the blue car next spring and wondering why it won't start and the front end sits up so damn high.

Just looking at the engine I can see a few parts I am interested in.

GL and a custom cam will do wonders over an off the shelf. A good buddy of mine does custom spec for a great price. Pm if interested.

I'm just kind of shooting off of the hip with some stuff I think I remember reading.

Have you thought about the 5.3L LS platform? As I recall, it was available in an aluminum block, and could be built easily to the same power levels as the 5.7L engine. I think it's benefit was high revving and smooth and if it's available with an aluminum block you can shave a ton of weight.

I see a lot of 5.3's but am avoiding it for one main reason - resale. Aside from the obvious reliability and tunability improvents the LSx will give me it will also keep the car relevant.

When it's time to start building the blue car and I have to let this one go I might actually get a decent price. The smaller bore LS's don't carry the same clout as a motor from a newer 'vette. Even if it's actually from a Camaro!

Of course the hope is that I don't ever have to sell her, there's too much of my blood and sweat in there. Which makes it kinda smell bad...

Well, not air cooler, the only good use for Voltswagon stuff is to fill in sink holes.

Introducing....

The new C4 dragstrip package!

The car is not on jackstands, there's just that much clearance in the front now. I think I'll keep it like that.

With the front end off like that, it would be a great time to add brackets for alignment bars.

What are alignment bars?

Square tubing bars on the front and rear to set up string lines. They provide an extremely accurate way to set toe in/out. And you can check to see how square your setup is, i.e. are the front a-arms/spindles equidistant from the centerline of the car (very important when you put the car on the scale platform).

The bars are fairly easy to build (I've built quite a few) and can usually be put on in less than 5 minutes. This is important at the track since toe can get screwed up easily, hit a curb hard, slight wheel to wheel contact, etc.

Cool. So you pretty much build some hidden bracketry that the alignment bar can slip in/out of?

Yep. The way you build the brackets/bars is different for every car.

On my Formula Ford, you have to pull the nose and tail to do it (like the pic). But pulling the nose and tail takes exactly one minute. Other kinds of cars may take 5 min. to install but to be able to start adjusting toe in 5 min. at the track is a huge benefit.

The only thing that takes a while when you build these is getting the marks (grooves in the tubing) for the strings equal left and right to the centerline of the chassis. But you only do it once.

Trick for the string - you use heavy fishing line, it can get tangled up easily. I go to Wallymary & buy 2 of the cheapest fishing reels ($6) and store the alignment string on them.

The other thing to have with this setup is a steering lock that makes sure the rack is at dead center. Easy to make for some cars, harder on others.

BTW, I also build a toe reading gauge fits against the wheel rim. It eliminated holding a ruler to the wheel.

That's the way the car is normally, the nose is just a shell that slides on or off in 5 minutes. It's only held on by two pins and some dzus fasteners...

Not a bad idea to make some bars.

Let me know if you're going to do it Jon.
I can pull mine out of the trailer and take some pics of certain things on them. Plus pics of the one handed toe in reading tool.

Have you considered a iron block? One with vvt could be good for track. Power curve is lil different. Lower compression. simple cam change will net more HP than a ls2. That's if you choose parts wisely. Don't kno how much you have followed my swap.....I should have about 8k in the engine components along and if my math is correct, have the ability to make 700-750 whp.

I watch a lot of ppl just buy parts at random with out studying what the end out come will be.
