Off to work shortly. Shower, then hit the road!

Got lots of small fires to put out...

It was 80 yesterday, today, back to 70 or so... we might get rain next week, but no promises.

Back to breakfast!!

Morning gang!

Whew... been a busy week... and it ain't letting up... lots going on. Work... planning on doing another refi - rates are so damned low!!

Went to my first car show in a year yesterday. It was fun. I will post up some pics later on. I need to get them off my phone first.

I am a "member" of a lose association of car guys here in LA. We are called the Crazy 8's. It's not so much a club, as a group of friends who cruise together to events. In the last year, the defacto leader/founder had been doing Sunday morning cruises... well, thanks to Bastet's home bakery business, I couldn't go. We did deliveries at the same time. She has since closed the bakery and now my Sundays are free again!

Yesterday morning about a dozen cars cruised in together. The founder dude has a super clean 68 vette roadster, he led the cruise... in the line, we had a Pantera, 4 or 5 Corvettes, a 67 GTO, 64 Nova SS and 3 or 4 late model Mustangs. Trust me, this was NOT a quiet parade. A number of folks waved and two folks stopped and asked were we were heading! Not a bad little car show, eh?

It was fun to get out... at the event, I would give the crowd, that I observed, an A+ for COVID mitigation. Everyone was wearing a mask, save the singer in the band (he gets a pass). Everyone that I spoke to kept distance and everyone used elbow bumps. Collectively, it was impressive... and yes, it was PACKED. I think there was a lot of pent up desire to do something and a nice, sunny, breezy morning was the perfect solution.

I did leave early, I didn't intend to stay long, because my knee was getting tight and I didn't want to risk over exposure.

As for the show itself, very nice. Lots of super clean and super cool cars. I would guess well over 100 cars showed up. There are two lots, plus street side and a back lot. I don't know if the back lot was full, but everything else was! If interested, the location is called the Automobile Driving Museum, in El Segundo, CA. I used to docent there, but bought a house... Perhaps I should try again.

Aloha.

All is well here. Sorry about the deferred cruise... COVID has put the brakes on way too many things.

Rainy and about 50... it wasn't as bad as they had been predicting... at least not down here in LA.

Otherwise, just chugging along!

Welcome back!!!

Sorry about the downtime... GoDaddy moved us to a new server (and it sure is faster!). But they updated the underlying software, which caused the forum software to break.

I called tech support and they reverted the software (a programming language called PHP), and we are back!

I am going update the current software shortly.

Should be a good test. A nice long one to get ready for Sebring next month.

Are they having a corral? I know there is supposed to be one at Sebring, but no GM participation, meaning, no autograph sessions or presentations and such.

quiet morning so far... the wife is watching the French Open (tennis) and we are getting ready to run some errands.

It's been pleasently cool the last few days, but the heat returns tomorrow.

Summer normally ends at the end of October. I can't wait!!!

You may want to do what is (or was?) called a CCC evaluation... This is where dealers are asked to report what they would expect to sell a car for.

It might be the best option here...

Who is your insurance company?

Oh, dude... that so sucks.

I am glad you and the family are ok!!! The house is a big plus, too!

The car can be replaced, but after 13 years, the memories run deep. I sold my C4 after 17 years... it was hard to make the decision, but easy to see it go... it was time.

But this was not your call... that super stinks!!!

If you need any insight, call.

I have a similar Kenwood... I don't remember the exact model number now! It does all that John's does. I use Android Auto with mine to do the nav and music functions.

I also have a box full of components that I need to install, but a bad back and bum knee has really slowed me down.

Morel 3-way front drivers, JL Audio sub, Helix, Focal and Pioneer amps.

John - I also love the Craftsman style.

In Dover, DE, near the hospital, is a Craftsman house - from Sears! It was a kit they sold out of their catalog and was shipped via train! Super cool.

Sadly, I checked google maps, and I think the house is gone... that sucks.

thank's for the update, John!!!

The C8 has a lot of room for storage... the rear trunk will hold a medium sized adult male.

Also, the frunk has quite a bit of room.

The first pic shows the top stowed in the trunk... think how big that top is and how deep the trunk is!

The 2nd pic is of the frunk. Just make sure you tie it down so when the frunk lit flies off...

Great pics, John! Thanks!

Random things:

1. Did the weather hold?

2. That 3900.00 76 for a project, fair deal for a VIN to do something cool with

3. That 79 4spd colour combo is neat! Very different

4. Big crowd?

5. Make it to the Middlesex Diner?

6. I love the Ron Fellows edition

7. The storage space in a C8 is the same as in a C7, just split over two bays - the frunk and trunk

8. When are you all getting a C8?

9. I love Mosport Green!!

10. The Bowling Green C7 is a fave...

11. Carlisle Blue is another fave, just needed a deep red interior

12. I love black rose. The Vette I drove at the Ron Fellows Corvette Driving School was black rose. It had the 3LT interior package, lots of Alcantara with black leather and red stitching! Sexy as hell

13. Did you all buy anything? Being nosy.

As always, John, great pics!!! Thank you for sharing, it almost felt like being there.

MPG has improved a lot... my brothers 67 Vette (L71 427!) got 10... never better!

I suspect that Pontiac would get low teens on the highway, if the engine was in good tune.

I remember all too well... my first car was an AMC Pacer (sigh). It had a 258ci I-6 with a 1 bbl carb. My mom kindly bought this car for me for Christmas 1981, because it was an AMC, which made such great cars as the Rambler some 20 years earlier. I understand the logic, but do some research, please.

That Pacer got shit for gas mileage. For the most part, it was gulping down at the 18-20 MPG range, local highway. Meaning, 40 mph avenues that were called highways. I graduated HS in 1983 and did a convoy drive to FL with my brothers family. He had a nearly new, 1981, Ford Crown Victoria. Plush, lux, and loaded... Nice car... as we drove down, he was getting 25 MPG on the highway, within this comfy cocoon of luxury... and I was getting 15 MPG. In this noisy shit box of an economy car. It just didn't seem fair.

That car made me so damned conflicted, yes, Mom got me a car for Christmas, super generous but it was such a POS... I hated it... and being the "husky" kid, a big round car didn't help my status one damned bit.

To update, my C6 (LS2 MN6) gets nearly 30 MPG on the open highway!

It wasn't so much I found a job, but my old job found me... I got my old job back!

I start on Monday!

As for our lovely weather, it's been hotter than hell... I was in Lakewood - just north of Long Beach - and it was some 101F!!! The thermometer on my C6 hit 107!! Hell, it was over 90 in San Pedro!

Heading to Temecula to visit my nephew... his sister, my niece, is visiting, so, mini-family reunion time.

That's about it!

0120? That's a fine line between Saturday night and Sunday morning... damn...

We are having a heatwave here in SoCal... I think our area may be free of it... coastal regions break first, usually.

It is supposed to be 75 here in SP today, whereas it is supposed to be 105 in Pasadena, 40 miles north. Ouch. Never boring!

Good day all!

It's Wednesday... Trivia night... Supposed to be hella hot here over the next few days. Heat alerts on the weather channel and stuff.

Got a dead fridge to rewire and a dead fan to troubleshoot. I wouldn't bother with the fan, except its one of those expensive Tornado brand fans... and it's not that old.

Mine wasn't too far behind... I ended up going with the K&N solution... we have sooo much fine dust out here, and that leads to more frequent replacement, after 2 or 3 new paper filters, I am making money by using the cleanable K&N!

Why are we where we are? I think the common denominator is education. It has, or the lack thereof, created a class structure.

Toss in misleading information - social media is not the place to get ones news - and a distrust starts to fester. That distrust becomes paranoia and a bad case of us vs them manifests.

It is a shame, a crying shame, that our country is tearing itself apart because people are to damned afraid to discuss topics, they must shout them down.

The bigger picture is the natural swing in culture... for example, in the 1920s, we had flappers and their degenerate kind, replaced by the dour depressed 1930s, then came swing bands and WWII, ladies working and all sorts of unnatural things... replaced by the 1950s, a decade of near perfect normalcy, as long as you were a white person, even better is that white person was male.

Then came the 1960s... the hippie revolution burst onto the scene with the assassination of JFK. Our social innocence was wiped out and people stopped trusting the government... we had Vietnam, the most tragic of wars, 56k US Service men and women died for no good reason, except to maintain French colonial control over Indo-China... a violation of the Atlantic charter - look it up.

That begat the 70s and the Me Generation, with disco... and the youth of America continued being free spirits... as did many of the boomers... But in the early 80s, the neo-conservative movements started to appear... These were old school Republicans who wanted to go back to laissez faire economic policies, which, as we all know, don't work in modern economies... please refer back to the Great Depression and how wonderful a job Hoover did recovering after the 1929 Wall Street Crash.

We are now at the peak of the power of the Neo Conservative revolution, so to speak, and we have now created a far left and a far right that are both spouting bullshit and lies in an attempt to wrest power from the other... leaving the rest of us in the middle wet from all the mutual pissing contests.

Toss in the fact that we are still a bigoted, racist society... oh, and toss in scared... we have a disaster on our hands.

It breaks my heart. It really does.

Since politics has invaded the site, I am making is perfectly clear - four more years of Trump would lead to the end of America as we know it. His administration is corrupt, incompetent and lacks the most basic elements of human compassion.

I don't care about the parties, I never have. I have voted for any number of parties, depending more on the candidate.

I look at performance. I look at the numbers... and the numbers out of the Trump administration are incomprehensible.

This will be my only diatribe on the subject. All I ask is that everyone votes for the future of America... and if that future means four more years of ignorance and messed up conspiracy theories, go for it.

Did anyone see the end of the IMSA race at Road America?

Rain? What is this thing you all call "rain"?

It's been sunny here... that is all.

The coolant temp sensor is DTC16, IIRC... it is important because the ECM must have the engine temp to set the mixture.

As long as the car starts, you are ok... because the CCM has to handshake with the ECM to start... once the engine fails to start, then start worrying.

COVID has avoided us so far!!! Whew...

The weather has been HOT around here for the last few days... today is the first nice day in nearly a week.

Got the Vette back on the road... was replacing the radiator support and did a brake bleed... need to fix an evap purge valve and do a quick tune up... poor car needs a bath, ASAP! It's a mess... dusty and covered in cobwebs.

Greenwood went medieval on the C4 frame... I have seen pictures... they removed the hatch floors and added triangulated reinforcements all in the frame and from the frame up to the halo. In short, they meant bizness...

I am an IT guy... I don't mind computers in cars, I just hate computers in cars where they are nothing but maintenance fails...

Engine controllers, IMHO, are the best thing since sliced bread... thanks to the tech (which came to the street from F1 racing), has given us 700hp V8s that can get 20 mpg on the highway... The 400hp LS2 in my '06 Coupe gets nearly 30 on the open highway!!! The LT1 in the C7, when mated to a 7spd manual, set in eco-mode, will hit nearly 40 MPG on the highway. That's insane. And if it helps us sustain our passions, I am all for it.

Where computers become a pain in the ass is when the OEM stops supporting them. I spoke to Harlan Charles about this a few years back, asking if GM was considering supporting older Corvettes with hard to get parts and he indicated it was on the radar, but I suspect the C8 kinda slowed that plan.

We in Corvette land are not the only ones with this problem... The Ferrari 348, 1990-1994 or so... it has a computer module that manages the climate controls. This component was made for Ferrari, using Ferrari specs, by an outside vendor. The downside? This module fails and you are stuck with an expensive car with no heat or AC! Ferrari doesn't make the part (well, they may now), and won't let the vendor make it, either... As I understand it, there is a dude in San Diego that fixes them... however, my point is that we are not alone.

In general, the computers in a C4 are pretty good. The CCM and EBCM are noted to last forever, and the ECM is good to 150k miles or more... Even tho it is made to deal with engine heat, I don't think it lives as long as it would if it was in a cooler area. Why not put it in the back storage bin? As an aside, if you need an ECM, the 1992 and 1993 Corvette ECM is shared with the 1993 Camaro/Firebird LT1 ECM. There are 120k of them out there... just swap the chips.

Do NOT trust the rebuilders... they don't know what they are doing...

Gloomy so far, but should burn off by noon... Close to the coast in SoCal usually gets lower temps... but we are on the wrong side of a hill and it can get warm...

It actually rained here a few days ago! Had to use the wipers!!! World must be coming to an end or something.

Working on some small fixes to the Vette... oil change, radiator support, things like that...

DTC41 is the comm error... this means the UARTs are failing.

UART - Universal Asynchronous Receive Transmit - are chips that send and receive data from the ECU to the CCM and from the CCM to and from the EBCM (brakes/ASR), the AC system and the radio.

There are two distinct UARTs on both the PCM and the CCM, they merge into 1 wire and split again on after the firewall... this creates a redundancy, if one fails, the other will take over.

I don't have the time now, but I will check the Helm Manual on this schematic for this... it used to be a tan wire, but I don't know the details on a 96.

At this point, I don't think the ground is the main problem... it smells like a failing PCM...
