Do you have to remove the smog pump, resevoir, and alternator to get it off or are there some shortcuts? I read that you have to have a special tool to get the pulley off, any truth to that? Also does the pulley have to come off first to get to the mounting hardware for the power steering pump? Guess I'll just jump in and find out. Thanks for the input.

trying to replace the boot on my sons car. This in an automatic. How do you get the spring loaded push button in the center out? I believe there is a c clip holding the button housing on, is this correct? Thanks.

Was just reading about the 90 compressor that froze up. Was trying to recharge the system, had to jumper the high side to get the compressor to turn when it went up in smoke. Am trying to remove the compressor have one bolt at the seven position another at the three which required removal of the valve cover to get out but seems like there is a third one at six that is partially covered by the pulley assy, what am I missing? Never had this much hassle removing a compressor. Does the pulley assy have to be removed?

Thanks Matatk, I did find the codes in my manual. When you put the tps in you have to measure the voltage to get between .5 and .8. I set it at 1 and reset the ecm, no more check engine lite and runs great. Thanks again

Have a check engine lite on which comes up as 22. My service manual doesnt list them but are they the same as the 84/86? They say low voltage tps. Replaced the throttle sensor, reset the ecm but still came back with a 22 code, any ideas?

Found the brown wire broke on one end coming from the temp switch, the other end was melted to the manifold thought I had found the problem, spliced new wire on but no joy. Finally just ran a new wire from the green/white wire at the relay to the temp switch and now works great. Kicks fan on at 238 till engine cools down to about 205. I don't know how the a/c ties into it but even with a/c running when the engine heats up fan will kick in. Thanks for all the help

Thanks for the info, put a 30A fuse in and works as advertised. I'm suprised at the difference between the fusebox fan fuse (3A) and the fusible link

Finally found that the fused link from the battery to the relay connector kept blowing when the fan comes on. It had a 15 amp fuse in it, replaced it with a 20 amp and it still blew. Anyone know what the correct amperage is? Put a piece of wire in to jumper and the system works as it should but should the fan draw that many amps?

Thanks for the diagram. Someone had tried to fix this before by running a wire from the hot lead on the air compressor directly to the fan. I see that both inputs go through the ecm. Found that the a/c system needs charged, would this cause the ecm to not send a signal to turn on the fan? Replaced the fan relay and checked wiring on connectors but still not getting voltage to the fan. Will recharge the a/c system and see what happens. This seems to be a common problem on the c4 line, either runs all the time or not at all, will keep you posted as to what I find.

Ok working on an 86 that has the same fan problem as my sons 84 but I know that the 86 has a different wiring schematic. Anyone out there have the fan wiring schematic for an 86. Thanks for all the help

Thanks for the info. Got it all off but am wondering about the bypass? What do you have to do? Original problem as told to me was overheating, said the thermostat wasn't opening but the stat looks fine. Will replace but is there a certain temp that I should get? There's also a sensor that bolts to the thermostat housing with two connectors and two air hoses, both of which I found broke. Looks like one goes to the TB and the other to a plastic tube running under the intake manifold, know which one goes where? I also have a low coolant lite, where is the sensor for this?

Ok I give, what is the TB? If it's the chamber running down the center of the engine then yes if I get it off it will be easy to reach the thermostat housing but what are the steps?
Ok had to think about that, you probably mean the throttle body. There's five bolts on each side connecting the intake and then the throttle cables on the front. Anything else that I might need to know? It looks like you could leave the cables on and just lay it over to the side.

Am wondering if anyone has the disassembly instructions for and 86 with the tuned port injection. Need to replace the thermostat. Believe I could possibly get to it but there is a smog sensor that sits directly above one of the bolts that is broke and needs to be replaced also.

Thanks for the info. Installed the new tps, it came with instructions on how to adjust it although the values were a little different. But what a DIFFERENCE!! Took care of the check engine lite but mainly the idle problem, smooth!!

This 84 is my son's car but I have an 82. I've got the gm shop manual for mine (both cars have the same engines technically)and found the throttle position sensor, it's on the rear throttle body. I read a blog that says you may be able to do adjustments but I can't see how and the manual does'nt mention anything. The wiring and connector look good so guess I'll have to go shell out some dinero for a new one, hope it fixes the check engine light will let you know. Thanks again for the codes!

Came up with code 21. Throttle postion sensor. Any idea where this is located. Will check wiring first then replace unless you have some other things I could check.

thanks for the diagram. Just out checking, have a good ground at the washer pump connector but am only getting 2.4 volts. Checked both pumps with a battery charger they work fine. Any ideas on what could be drawing the voltage down? Will check more later see what I can find.

Thanks matatk,
Yes I pushed it down but still no joy. Is there a separate fuse for the pump? I don't think I'm getting 12 volts at the connector. Probably ties in somewhere with another connector that's shorting. Will try a battery charger on the pumps and see if they work with a known good 12 volt source.

Thanks for the input. I was taking measurements today and found that the contacts in the relay connector were shorting together. I won't buy another first year model edition of any car, too many problems. Have found numerus wiring problems on these connectors, mainly from the engine heat. Liquid tape is a lifesaver for bare wires on these connectors. Now onto the next problem, washer reservoir won't work. Found one on ebay, thought the old one was cracked, leaked out as soon as you filled it up, but pump won't work on either one. Can you remove the motor by loosening a nut inside the reservoir? What voltage are you suppose to get on the connector?

Bought my son an 84 vette and as soon as you turn the ignition on the fan starts. Replaced the relay, no joy. Disconnected both the a/c pressure switch and the engine temp switch, fan still runs. Disconnecting the relay does stop the fan. Measure the green/white wire going into the relay and it goes straight to ground, but if I measure the wires from the a/c switch and the temp switch they read open. Is there a difference in the wiring for an 84 compared with later model years? I do have a check engine light on constant that I have to check. Can the ECM cause the fan to run constant? I've seen two different wiring charts for this, one looks like you have to have the grounds from either the a/c switch or temp switch to turn the relay on and power the fan. The other one takes inputs from both switches into the ECM and it sends the signal to the relay to energize the fan. Any help would be great!
