One of the biggest reasons why so many C4s rattle and squeek is the heater core replacement. And yes the reason the part number is 000000000001 is because it's the first part down the assembly line. The rest is built around it.

I have a heat core tech article... it has been in "production" for 5 years... and why? Because there are so many steps.
I will forward whatever I have to whomever wants it. |

Hello, Bogus!
I'm interested in getting to my heater core. If you wouldnt mind forwarding your directions, I'd appreciate it. The FSM shows it as 5 steps. It's just that they all say a variant of Remove Part 'A', (see section 3 for the 25 step procedure for that); Remove Part 'B' (see section 6 for the 20 step procedure, etc) My blend door for my AC is immobile, and I think I need to get in there to change the motor. (93 Vert). For the past year I have been training myself to enjoy heat year-round! Thanks Paul |

I was told a 1000 dollars plus parts, 8 years ago. But, one dealership said HELL no. Car is too old, and too many things to break while doing it.

Good thing is I did buy the heater control part that controls the door. Supposedly it was discontinued years ago. But, I may do this job this winter, okay, in Hawaii. I do have a year to get it done

I will be emailing the PDF out shortly to those interested parties.
I did my core using that as a guide... it is still a bitch and it took me a good 8 hours to get the dash apart. I am guessing that $1000 is a good estimate, if not more. I will be blunt as to why the dealership said "hell no" - it's not the plastic bits breaking, there really isn't much of that in there that will break, it's the fact they don't have a trained tech on site, so the guy doing it would lose his shirt. The parts that come off are not all that plastic... the dash pad, the glovebox... much are metal posts and things that hold the structure together. I would also reassemble with some RTV in holes and torque the bolts good, then the dash won't squeak/rattle when done. |

I believe I paid $725 about 2 and a half years ago. I would not go to the dealer for that even if I could. Not at $105 per hour labor rate. It's best to shop a knowledgable old school mechanic that has small hands. I drove the car for 3 years without the benefit of heat. That meant no rainy days (defroster), no cold days below 50*. (I have other cars with heat). Funny thing is the heater doesn't really get too much use fromm me. Probably 5 to 10 times a year tops.

I just priced this last month, at the dealership, for my '92. $1,100.00 total for parts and labor. I also have the pdf that Lani made if anyone wants it. It's complete, step by step, with pictures.

In the meantime take good care of your coolant, and turn the heater on at least once a month to reduce corrosion.
If it has stagnant and untreated water in it, it will find a way through the metal. |
