Hi All,
I had my vette out last Friday night. Some punk in a ricer burner was disrespectin Frankie. So we showed him what an American sports car can do and opened up a can of whoop as. on him. But in the process of movin and groovin, I broke the plastic gas pedal mounting bracket on my 86 vette. Why the hell would Chevrolet make that bracket plastic? I was only a few blocks from home and made it back, gas pedal hanging. Maybe the plastic got weak from all those years of firewall heat. I was going to fabricate a bracket from steel or aluminum. Has anyone ever had this happen to their vette? Joe Flash Man |

Happened to me 3 weeks ago.
I was at the track, first run, petal snaped off at 3/4 track! I limped home (2 miles away) and found the break exactly where you describe. Called around and could not find a replacement so decided to try fixing it myself. I couldn't remove the cable (yeah....back spasms galore)so I drilled out the pivot pin and left the petal and lever on the car, removed the (now two-piece) mounting bracket. I drilled and countersunk a hole through the 'post' of the bracked, then epoxyed the pieces together and bolted thru the post into the bracket. After cured, I re-installed it to the firewall and, using the existing (thin wall) pivot bushing, installed the petal lever and added a bolt, flat washers and locking nut to keep it together. So far it's working perfect.....although the pivot bracket remains on my list of 'needed items'. Good luck |

I'd buy a new pedal assembly and get 25 more years out of it. The billet aluminum ones have more slop than the stock one.

Hey Guys,
Pedal installed and working well. Took me all but 15 minutes. I did notice that the plastic mounting bracket was a little thinner than the original one. I am still going to fabricate a metal bracket for a back up. Im not gonna drive my vette like a pussy because of a plastic mounting bracket. BTW. The manual transmission swap is working well. It was a lot of work, but I am having a lot of fun with my vette. I dont beat the crap out of it. But I cant help but get on it every now and then. The car really pulls now. Thanks again for all of you that assisted me. The only problem I have is that when I switch to overdrive, it wont kick down passing gear because the T cable is too long. I couldnt use the 84 cable because I dont have a crossfire and it was too short. So I used my 700R4 t cable. I will figure it out soon. You guys were right. Gotta clutch before switching overdrive on and off or it bangs into gear. Other than that, Im in heaven. lol. Joe Flash man |

Yeap, common problem, I snapped mine about 10 years ago at the track after about 500+ jabs at the gas pedal.... I didn't do anything wrong, just a normal hit.... guess it was time. I was a nifty 90 miles away from home... that was an interesting ride home.
Jimmy'd up an aluminum bracket replacement and haven't had any problems since, and thats a cool 1000+ jabs at it since. So far so good. good luck ! |

I haven't seen the break yet, knock on wood, can you post a pic of the broken pedal assembly?
I curious of where and what you could do to help prevent it. |

...or if the design sucks. I don't install things wrong.
It uses a clevis pin through the square hole of the pedal arm. The clevis pin is by no means a precision-made part, and has slop between it and the pedal, and between the pin and aluminum bracket. At least the stock piece has the pin riveted to the pedal, so there's less slop there. The aluminum piece also moves the pivot 1/2" higher on the early cars which can cause the gas pedal to jam against the dash structure above at full throttle. Seems a tad bit dangerous to me. I'm glad you had luck with yours. I felt bad criticizing it at the time because the guy who was making them was on his deathbed. I contacted him through R-D and they were willing to send me a used stock pedal, but as far as I know, did nothing to fix the design or stop advertising it for early cars. I sent the aluminum piece back to them and repaired my stock pedal assembly with their pin, so it's now worse than before. (You have to drill out your stock rivet to use the pedal with their bracket.) I don't seem them offering it for sale anymore. |
