Looks like the road was wet, and the bridge was frozen.

When the road isn't laid directly over a giant heat sink (Earth) it freezes over sooner.

One minute, it was blue skies and clear. Within seconds, a blusterous burst of snow blinded drivers, turning highways across the Kansas City area into demolition derbies Sunday afternoon.

Over a two-hour period, at four locations, more than 100 crunched and mangled vehicles littered the roadways and medians. Ambulances rushed to each scene, transporting dozens of people to at least three hospitals

. . . .

“You could be driving along and think everything is fine and then — boom — you hit a burst of snow,” said meteorologist Pat Cooper of the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill. “Visibility’s almost zero, you brake, and then you get cars piling into each other.”

That must have been the white out that came through here earlier on Sunday. My girls were going to Omaha to see a play and I told them no. They were bummed at the old man until they heard of all the pile ups. Several 15 and 17 car pile ups with a few semi's thrown in. One girl died when a semi rammed into her. Cars stalled for hours while they cleared off the wreckage. Nothing is worth traveling in that!

That is right at the intersection that we take to my daughters house. My wife had just taken off to go shopping when that occurred. Luckily she was going the other direction. My other daughter's(I have two that live in the KC area) in-laws were just leaving and they just missed this as well. He said the first collision happen right behind him. Then all h@*ll broke loose.

Sounds like an excuse for someone texting while driving or otherwise not paying enoug attention. We had some NASTY historical rain down here last month and everyone was doing 25 mph on the interstate but I was still in control of my own destiny... with a death grip on the wheel, squinting with wipers on max, and using every bit of driving talent I had to keep it between the lines.

No way. I remember driving in Arizona one night on the highway. I was doing 80 and all of a sudden there was a dust storm from the desert and visibility went to zero. I literally slowed down to about 5 miles an hour and hoped I didn't get hit from behind. Add in the ice conditions that these guys faced and that makes it worse. I don't know how much driving you do in the winter, but throw in a bunch of icy roads and it sucks.
