Josh What is an acceptable rate of pressure drop when testing the cooling system?

I pressurized the cooling system in my 91 with a coolant system tester. The system dropped from 19 PSI to 12 PSI in one hour. There are no visible leaks. Should I be worried about an internal leak?

Hi Josh,

I don't know the answer (still working on my own ac problem), but Dan directed me to a site with loads of info and a forum with plenty of FAQ's.

Perhaps it might help http://www.ackits.com

As coolant absorbs heat from the engine it expands the coolant thus causing pressure. As the coolant cools pressure will drop. This cooling process has variables: outside temp, humidity, and efficiency of the cooling system The boiling point of the coolant is lowered by pressurizing the system by heating and circulation via the water pump. Hope this helps!

I think your OK! with no visible signs of leaks or smell of coolant.

Generally with the testors, you're looking for a couple psi drop in like 5 min.
If your car had been run at all before the test, the drop in one hour is possible (like Ron said).

The car was stone cold. It had sat overnight, so the temperature of the coolant didn't change throughout the test.

If you have a standard 16psi cap and you pump 19 psi your going to loose psi when cap opens to relieve pressure into the overflow tank. 12 psi is normal for that lenght of time.

My tester will relieve pressure @ 14psi

Doesn't sound right to me. I'd try again but not start above the cap rating.

FWIW the instructions that came with my Stant tester specify a two minute evaluation period....

I put the tester on my daily driver and the same thing happened. For the time being I'm going to treat it as normal.

I left the tester on it over night, and after 24 hours the system still had 6 PSI in it.

Isn't the cap sitting on the garage floor during the test?
