After a 2 year hiatus of broken optisparks and black flags, Spectator Racing is back on top!
Last weekend we had 3 races, ending with 2 wins and a DNF. The DNF was by choice, for a change. No more watching the race go by parked in the infield. If you want to waste ten minutes of your life check out the video below. I had a great start, followed by two boneheaded moves (hey, it's been 2 years!), finished with some awesome racing between me and another C4. I actually raced up a class as there was nobody in PTA where I normally run, but it turned out to be a pretty even fight. It was my frist time at the Beaver, so my line is far from perfect. I swear, I don't think I got the last turn (with the water tower) correct more than 3 times the entire 35 minute race. I cut out several uneventful laps in the middle and end, and threw some footage near the end of the race when the ST1 Vipers caught up to me to show what 600 RWHP can do... Anyway, here's the video, enjoy! |

Nice video!
A few questions: 1) How long is the lap? 2) How fast in the straightaways? 3) Did you get out and punch the guys in the porsches with the 7 ft wings? (orange corvette can be included in this) 4) Who stole your dashboard? Overall, very nice! Matthew |

Thanks, I had fun making it A few answers: 1) How long is the lap? Beaverun is a pretty short track, 1.6 miles. 2) How fast in the straightaways? Hard to say as I don't have a speedo. But...I top 4th gear in two places (ZF6). Roughly 110 on the front straight and 120-130 on the back (before the little kink). That kink is brutal, BTW. It looks like there's a lot of room with the fish-eye video. But really I barely make the turn, straighten the car out, and jack on the brakes in time. That's partly why I went wide on that corner so many times. Couldn't get my timing right. 3) Did you get out and punch the guys in the porsches with the 7 ft wings? (orange corvette can be included in this) No ricers here...that's aero that actually works. Did you see how the two red Porsches destroyed me after the straight? Rear grip vs. no rear grip. But yes, I did punch them all. In the face. 4) Who stole your dashboard? Sold it on ebay to pay for food...racing ain't cheap;) |

2) Like Jon said, racecars don't have speedos and racers don't care how fast they go in the straights, straights are for relaxing (even at 140), getting a drink of water, thinking about stragity, talking on the radio, waving at your crew chief. 3) Humm, This is racing. 4) Real racecars don't have dashboards, everything's on the steering wheel. |

Congrats, Jon. No in-car vid is a waste on time. You usually run in the Parents and Teachers Association class? Obnoxious comments: The start: I'm screaming and giving guys the finger when they start that far behind the next car. "Drive Angry" - ya make some of the best passes then. Orange C4 - Not surprising he ran off the track, his lines and brake/throttle suck. There's a shitload of bumps on that front straight, I would have chipped a tooth in the Formula E. |

It's amature road racing, Rich. Here are the rules (click on them) for the 2 best organizations. http://www.nasaproracing.com/racing/ http://www.scca.org/hub.aspx?hub=1 There are classes for "pure" stock cars. You still need a cage though. You can't do many mods in these classes. You can run your street car on the track (but not race) in HPDE's (High Performance Driving Experience). You really do need to do this before racing (and it's required by some). In a HPDE, you usually have an instructor. You need a boat load of seat time to drive like Jon, and to be safe when cars are 2 inches off your fender. |

Bill, thanks for the comments. I was a little rusty, but overall it was a good weekend. Rich (in the orange car) is actually pretty good, but I was pressuring him pretty hard at that point. He started taking a defensive line and overdriving it, which is why I did something right for a change and waited for a mistake. Of course, then he did the same thing to me later on...
I should mention that I was on 275 rears and he was on 315's though Damn, I'm good. |

I will caution you on this course of action. The difference between racing and crack is that crack is cheaper. In all seriousness, though, there's nothing like it. With the possible exception of flying fighter jets (which isn't an option for most of us) I've found nothing as intense and entertaining as racing. I've sky dived, bungie jumped, whitewater rafted class V+ rivers, etc. I quit it all when I found out you can do this stuff with your car. Although when I found out it was legal that killed some of the fun... |

Yea, Rusty, I haven't turned a lap (in competition) in 2 years. We have a PDX only (no TT) in 2 weeks. Instructors get free sessions but, I'll be in my good'ol base suspension C4. At least it'll be track time. |

I thought you were going to rear end that 944. What's his excuse?
I'll have to check up and see what cars are in ST2. Looks like fun competition. |

The Porsche guys like to rear-end each other. That's why they wear their boxers backward; At least every other one does. He was probably presenting to see if I'd oblige... I think SoCal is the largest region in NASA. I bet there are plenty of ST2 cars. Although you're better suited to PTB or C in your car. See if there are any car counts at your local events in those classes. |
