One of my goals/plan is to take a Route 66 road trip in my car. I currently could do this in my car, but would prefer this trip after my motor is done. Although a lot of the route has been changed to interstate I still think it would be great. Several historical stops are being recreated. I just really like the idea of how travel used to be. We would take several trips were there wasn't a set destination. The road trip itself was the vacation.

Just follow major chunks of I-40 and you are there.

It is a neat road. Many pieces are still there and it feels properly vintage. We stopped at a place called the Jackrabbit Trading Post. Very cool.

A lot of the original Mother Road still exists in CA to AZ.

Kinda rough in places but I still remember those curves as a kid (1960) riding in Dads 56 Chevy from Detroit to LA. He would never pull over so I could chip off the exposed Turquoise rock from the road construction. And we missed the Giant Squid, Ball of Rubber Bands and other fun stops. So when wifey and I traveled 66 recently, we stopped at every turn in the road!

I drive it every day

I'd like to take an old school road trip like that, though, too. I think it would be cool to stop at little diners and shops along the way. I like site seeing at a leisurely pace.

I drove the '91 to OK. from Chicago in '09 so I was able to explore bits and pieces of the old road on the way, as it paralleled the interstate. Passed some old abandoned stone roadside motel cottages, cemeteries, etc. and a Missouri mule. It was fun. Here's a couple pics. Have fun!

I have done it four times from California to New Mexico where my daughter's family is stationed. Car stopped working every time I saw a sign for a Casino. Made big bucks at Route 66 casino.http://500nations.com/casinos/nmRoute66.asp Click on Casino.. It is close to where my daughter lives.

There still are original chunks of the road in many states. Many places are trying to restore and preserve things related to it. I drove on part of it in NM a couple years ago. In '62 we followed it out to AZ, the year my dad worked on a masters degree at ASU. Sounds like a great trip.

That's kinda like the Lincoln Highway, they even have an association across the country to preserve it.

We've done the whole deal twice, once in 2000 with the big 'ole Chrysler and once in 2005 with the 2003 'vert (I actually wrote a book about that trip and Andy is in it). We're doing it again in 2015, this time a little more slowly than in the past - looking at 250 miles a day or so.

I think that the Lincoln Highway turned into old highway 30 that was a main street through Neb until the Interstate systems came through. Don't quote me on that but I think that is right. I am always on the look out for old highway maps from the 40's and 50's that show the old roads. I even have some Burma Shave signs.......
