Anyway, I'm just giving Andy a hard time....

Anyone know where I can get an AC Bracket for a 1990 L98?

I'm this> < close to getting this done. Would have been finished today if not for this......

Can anyone help me out?

Man that sucks. Sorry to hear about that. No clue where you could get one quick. Ebay comes to mind for some used stuff.

I have a pair of EM coated headers for my LT4. The folks at Exotic Muscle said that I would have to eliminate the AC brace. They claim it will be OK. I haven't installed them yet but will fabricate something to replace the brace.

Works fine with the L98. I was tightening the screws on the Water pump when this ugly snapping noise happened.

I have taken to using a 1/4 inch drive ratchet as to avoid over tightening certain things. Couldn't do that on this....

Damn, John, that sucks... That bracket doesn't like being tweeked one bit, as you learned.

I agree, www.vette2vette.com is a great start.

IF the 1990 bracket is aluminum, you can get it welded... but I suspect it's pig metal. Pig metal isn't very strong, it's strength is totally engineered into the shape and structure, so if you load it against the expected design parameters, snap it goes.

DropTop - the 1990 AC bracket is totally different than the 1992+ bracket. First off, I know ours is cast aluminum. Secondly, the 1990 put the accessories on both sides of the engine, the AC is on the passengers side, whereas the alternator is on the drivers. The 1992+ design as all the belt driven accessories on the drivers side.

You know what really sucks? That I had that dam thing off four or five times for mock up. No problems.

This was the last time I'd have to deal with the dam thing and SNAP.

for future reference, they sometimes require washers on the head and or block points to make sure the bracket stays level.

I put some washers in since I didn't like how it sat. The issue was it wasn't sitting flat. Rather than disconnect the thing and figure it out, I chose to put a little force behind it and let the nuts pull it down. bad idea.

In my haste, I just realized, I left out the bracket which attaches to the AC bracket. forcing the nut on the water pump too far down. If the bracket was in there it wouldn't have tightened that far, and probably wouldn't have broken.

I'm kicking myself...over and over and over.....dammit.

Take it to a good welder for evaluation before trashing it. You just learned a lesson in the school of hard knocks. It takes many years to graduate. Later! Frank

Graduating? Geez... I must have 843 credits towards graduation... the problem is that the required number of credits is always one more than you have.

I donno about welding the stuff... Pig metal doesn't weld well... Then come the reality - that bracket sits pretty close to the block, if there is a raise due to the weld bead, I am afraid it would throw everything off.

I wonder... would it be practical to get some made from cast aluminum? I bet you could make a living off of that.

I'll be taking advance orders for AL ones tomorrow......

I think it would be pretty expensive.

I'd rather replace than weld it. I have too much time and money into this at this point to depend on a welded joint.

Yes, do that, dont go without the brace. Make sure whatever you put in its place will be at least equal or better than stock.
