I like buying tools but I like making them much more especially "Low Usuage" ones.

When I was at Steve's machine shop painting his locomotive engine. I told him I wanted to use his lathe to make a punch cause my lathe has a hiccup right now. The pinch is used to stake the trailing arm bushings in place on a C2/3.

He said, just make the whole thimg while you're at it. I did the punch on the lathe, he programed his CNC mill for the plates, took him a minute and a half.
Made the whole tool in 35 minutes.
The smaller locating pin in one plate is a .001 press fit.

I have to get 2 bolts today.
Total cost - $4

First pic is the $100 tool from the Corvette catalogs.

Wow that's an amazing job. Gary says these tools tend to wear out quickly for repeat users so watch for deformation...maybe check and measure before and after and see if there is any change.

Good to know, but I'll probably only use these once. Doubtful that I'll be buying another C2.

I like making those kinds too, Bill. Just wish we had a decent metal lathe at school.

The only thing the CNC did was layout the hole spacing, you can do that with a ruler. And drill the holes with a drillpress. The punch was done on a lathe which U already got.

List of machine shop tools to ask for for Christmas:

Cold Saw
Plasma Torch
Lathe
Mill
Waterjet

Man the more I think about it the larger the list gets...all the way down to a steam cabinet for parts washing, blast cabinet, heck even a paint booth and walk in over for power coating.

Great work, Bill. To me, the "satisfaction factor" of making my own is even better than the cost savings! I'm sure you feel the same way!

Not that I know of but you do need one to tub out the rear to make room for the 12 inch slicks.

Fiberglass work requires funny suits.

Yeah I need those at times but not really as much.

I am still deciding if I have the patience to TIG, in which case I will need to take some classes.

I find that I can produce better (purddier) welds with a TIG than I can with my MIG (But my MIG is not a GOOD MIG, it's an adequate MIG). It's a 110v Lincoln, 110 so I can take it to the racetrack. But I've never had a weld fail using the 110.
Practicing on a TIG - you get "up to speed" fairly fast.

I just can't justify the cost for a decent one, good used Miller/Lincolns are $1,500.
