Hi
I'm going to be doing some work on the rear wheel wells and brake rotors. Where is the best spot to place the floor jack and where should the floor jacks be placed?

Thanks
Jim

Damn... I need to bring the tech library back.

Then again, the software sucked. So maybe I will do something else.

Check the attached PDF.

To get most floorjacks under the front crossmember, you need to raise the front end of the car up a bit.

The easy way is to use a 6-8 inch piece of 2x6, 2x8, etc.

Cut the 2x8 on a 45 degree to make it easier to drive up on to. And, these tend to slide a bit so if you mount the 2x8 on a longer piece of plywood (like 18 inches), pulling on to the plywood will hold everything in place.

I can post a pic if anyone wants it.

Please post picture. The more information the better. I was dealing with this last week and looking for Andy's PDF.

Is the convertible different than the coupe in this regard? I remember the directions for this guys ZR1 said to put the stands inboard of the seam where you lift the car.

My jack looked like it was bending the crossmember in that first picture as I had it there after getting the car on ramps.

I'll try and get some pics today.

No

I remember the directions for this guys ZR1 said to put the stands inboard of the seam where you lift the car.

That's very incorrect.

My jack looked like it was bending the crossmember in that first picture as I had it there after getting the car on ramps.

OK, per request, here's how to get your C4 up on stands.

First - Equipment.

Get a good jack, spend some money.
The first pic is NOT a good jack.
Note the rubber pad on my orange jack that replaces the steel one. You can get these at HF (maybe) or Summit.

DON't get a cheap "quick pump" jack.

Jack stands- Note the cheap one on the left, it's fine for your 200 lb. boat trailer but nothing else.

Buy 6 TON stands (you're going to be under 3,500 lbs).
The price difference between 3 ton and 6 ton is $7 to $10 bucks a pair. HF has 6 ton on sale for $45 a pair.

The red one on the right is Summit's, nice enough but has curves saddles that fit a rear axle. I fabbed the yellow, steel, flat caps.

Make up some ramps to lift the front end so you can get your jack under the front crossmember. These are 2x8's screwed to some plywood (they're different lenghts cause I'm lazy). The plywood prevents the 2x8's from slipping when you drive up on to them.
Use what screp you have laying around, you could use 2 pieces of 2x4 per ramp since they are screwed to the plywood. The ramp do not have to be as wide as your tires but I'd use 2x8 (7 1/2 in ) minimum.

Pull on to the ramps and set the parking brake.
Then, position your jack pad on the front cross member and jack it to full height.

Front jackstand location.
On the frame beside the pinchweld.
Note that this pinchweld is the factory recommended place to put your jack OR where to put the lift pad when your on a 2 post lift.
Obviously you can't jack the car up here because this is where you put the jackstands.

Lower the car SLOWLY on to the jackstands.
Then move your jack to the factory jack point (the one that says "Jack Location". This is on the pinchweld, put the jack pad on this pinchweld (be very careful that the pad is only on the pinchweld, if your pad is in too far, it will be contacting the fiberglass floorboard.).
DO NOT USE WOOD ON THE FLOORJACK PAD HERE, the pinchweld will split the wood.

Jack the car up high enough to get the rear jackstand under the car. NOTE: when jacking the car up, the frame will come off the front jackstand on the side that you're jacking, this is not a problem.

Put your rear jackstand on the factory recommended location, just behind the "jacking location". Make sure your jackstand pac contacts both pinchwelds (shown with blue tape). Be careful on the left side, there's fuel lines between the pinchwelds but you can still put a stand there.

The other way to jack up the rear is to buy an adapter that fits between the exhaust pipes and contacts the rear end.

Nice instructions, Bill.

As well as being careful with the surrounding fiberglass, in the be careful of the brake lines that run along with jack locations.

I have used the harbor freight aluminum racing jack for over 3 years now with no problems. It's low profile and does a nice job.

Guys who have me 2 colors are always jealous. You know, the 3 colors you see at every stoplight and in every parking lot, always hunkered together like a bunch of antelope hiding from a mountain lion. How boring.

My biggest fear in life is the fear of being mediocre.

I hate jacking my C4 and putting it on jack Stands LOL.

It was on Jack stands for almost 1.5 years during the rebuild and still go's on jack stand every now and then and as many times I done it It still makes me nerves every time I have to do this.

I have to put up on Jack stand again sooon I need to replace the Lock convertor plug on the side of the trans as soon as the new one shows up on the UPS truck I do think because the plug is broken and the wire not staying in thats why my MPG not all that great.

I am getting 22 MPG up on the HWY as long my foot out of it LOL.

Thanks! I raised the back driver side and the front was off the ground a good amount too so I put jack stands on the front and rear.

Do you know what the rear caliper gets torqued to?

Thanks again

In picture number 9, I see the two pieces of tape with that recessed area between them.

Does the jack stand sit/contact the car between the pieces of tape in that recessed area?

Or does the car sit on the jack on one of those flanges (doesn't seem right).

Or does the jack stand bridge the recessed area and the car sits on the stand on both of those flanges that the tape is on? I don't think my jack stand pad is wide enough to meet both flanges bridging that recessed gap??

IT should bridge, sit on both not necessarily exactly on top of the tape but needs to sit on both flanges,

How big are your stand pads, Ralf?

I'm thinking they are about the size of the unit you pictured. Maybe picture 09 just makes it seem larger than the pad. I'm going to have to crawl under there and look when I get off work.

That said, when I use the lift pad at the base hobby shop, does the lift pad then contact those two flanges bridging that gap? I've got to get over to the base to do that.

Yes, absolutely. You do have to be careful of the steel lines there when you're raising the lift.
The front lift pad location is on the flanges shown in pic 7.

Like this (factory recommended pad locations):

About 5 years ago I had my 78 Suburban (a tank!) up on 4 jack stands & the floor jack still under the cross member for extra safety. All I was doing was rotating tires, as soon as I removed the pass side rear tire, the whole damn truck fell to the ground scared the crud outa me, a near miss for sure... Havent been under a car since! My fault I didnt take into account that my drive way has a slight decline......
