Toshiba is giving up on it's HD format. They won't be sending any more units out after March. 600,000 units have been sold. Ouch for those people. Netflix is discontinuing HD movies. Now we have to wait for the Blu-Rays to come on down which will probably take a while until other manufacturers drive the price down.

Supposedly the final nail in the coffin was Walmart deciding to sell Blu-Ray only.

I seriously doubt Walmart had anything to do with it.

I would say its got alot to do with the Sony name being quite globally popular, especially with younger people, and also older people that have no idea what real quality is.

With most Sony products being made in Malaysia and Thailand and have been for many years, id be very hard pressed to consider them a decent quality piece of equipment.

You can bet your balls if it was Panasonic, Toshiba, and Hitachi that backed Blu-Ray, firstly they wouldve spelt it properly, and secondly, every man and his dog wouldve gone for the Sony backed product anyway cause they want to be with the in crowd. The dumb shmucks that work in the shops selling these items wouldnt know their arse from their elbow on how long things stand the test of time, cause if they did, no one in their right mind would be buying anything Sony and expecting it to last.

Tell us how you really feel case I thought that the blu-rays were the best because they could hold more data among many other reasons. From what I have seen the only reason HD was better was because it was cheaper.

Well, since I have the PS3, I'm pretty happy about the decision. I have had some Sony PS2 units fail after a few years, but other than that, Sony stuff has been good to me.

I will be seriously upset if my PS3 only lasts a couple years. My PS1 lasted forever, and it was used hard.

Here's an article on it:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23218965/

Seems there were a lot of factors, mostly though the fact that the major movie studios will only release their movies on Blu-ray.

I wonder who was behind that????

Figured it was only a matter of time. Last weekend, I bought an LG dual Blu-Ray/HD DVD player to replace the Samsung Blu-Ray player I had (the Blu-Ray laser went out on it). I have some HD DVD's (HD DVD player on my Xbox 360) and it is easier to show my wife how to use 1 component than a bunch of them (have both the 360 and the PS3). Hopefully, this will mean clearance prices on the HD DVD's. I'll pick up as many titles as possible, then.

It is just a wild guess, but my money is on smiling Jack Valenti and the
the legacy he left behind.
