It's amazing how prior generation tech goes away when something new comes along...

Horse and buggy killed by railroads and cars...

Railroads killed off by freeways and airplanes...

Tape player/recorders killed off by iPods...

CRTs killed off by LEDs...

Really cool stuff!!!

I REMEMBER STEAM LOCO'S VERY WELL. THEY WERE MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN THE DIESEL-ELECTRICS. SUPER COOL!

Gris may well remember Conestoga wagons as they rolled past his sod house.......arr arr......

I love the old trains and did miss the steam engines but did ride on a train with my folks in 59 from NYC to St. Louis and then KC Kansas......with a change over to a smaller train that left us off at a small station in the middle of the night in Manhattan Kansas. That old train station is still there but serves as a museum of sorts I think.....I go by it when I am in town.....I remember it was a warm humid night and Dad had to use the pay phone to call a taxi to take us to the hotel.......

The train we rode from New York was a streamliner but I have lost in the mists of time the name of the train. It had Pullman cars and a fine dining car and a bar car along with the black Porters in their starched white jackets.....and when we got back to our cabin after dinner, where everyone was dressed nicely, it had been transformed into a bed room for us to sleep in......all amazing things for a 9 year old...

The names of the trains back then were very cool.....The Empire Builder, California Zephyr, Western Star, City of New Orleans, The Souther Belle, The Comet, The Santa Fe Super Chief, The Royal Palm and a host of other City trains....like City of Las Angeles and The City of Portland.....These were streamliners with all the amenities of fast comfortable travel......

I like trains......but the golden age of them is gone forever.....replaced by Amtrak........nice!

No totally, you can still ride em, like the Virginia & Truckee RR. In fact, a few years ago, millions were spent to extend the tracks here back to Carson City (the V & T used to haul the gold & silver from Virginia City to the Carson City Mint).

The California Zephyr still runs...........daily.....San Francisco to Chicago. Obviously Amtrak but the observation cars are still in use.

South Station is still a train hub. Used to have the diesel locomotives (post steam) and might still have a couple pulling in from around New England. I think the electrics can be boarded there now. I rode the rails often back in the olden days. Remember lining up pennies on the rail and the train wheels squishing them together.

Yeah...I have always loved that song.....written by Steve Goodman and performed first by him in 71. Arlo heard it and then did it in 72 which was when I first heard it.......

Steve Goodman received a posthumous Grammy for the song in 85 for Willy's version that went to number one on the Billboard hot country singles chart in 85........I think the song is an American classic.......

Wikipedia may have been used in the post.........
