The last time I did this, I didn't use anything on the hose connections. I read a thread that recommended using gasket sealer on the thermostat housing and other connections where the hoses mate. Do you all do that?

I use Armor All, to get 'em on easier, and prevent seizing.

Seizing will make heater core nipples fracture at the joint next time you pull 'em. Very expensive and time consuming.

Get some on the outside of the hose too for the clamp, to seat it square on the hose. Otherwise it could cut into the hose...

Thanks

I don't use any at all. Sometimes to help them slip on I just rub a little coolant on the inside of the hose. Makes it a little easier.

Boy, that is 'old school' from like when I was young and so was dirt. Quality of the hoses back, way back, then wasn't as good and a dose of sealant prvented cold water leaks. No need for it today, regular or silicone hoses seal just fine now days. Should mention if you are using silicone hose be sure to use the proper clamps so as not to cut into the hose.

You want the hoses on dry for the best seal. The rubber actually bonds to the metal lines. It should crack loose later if you twist it off, assuming it's less than 20 years from now.

I agree, I had a boss in a gas station in the 70's that did that, I use dielectric grease on mine just to make sure I can get them off.
