The writers of this article call this a budget build, but at over $ 9000 cost, their budget is clearly different than mine..... but never the less, fairly impressive results for this 383.

I think years ago, to get over 600 HP out of a 383 using off the shelf $ 1495 cylinder heads would have taken 7500 rpm.... but this one came in at 615 HP @ 6700 rpm...... which is what makes this motor impressive in my opinion.

Not much of a street motor though, or at least in my opinion its not. But, everybody has there different idea of streetability.

(Disclaimer: It is not the intent of the poster to be demonstrating how great a particular cylinder head is and he contends, he would have posted this regardless of what brand was on this motor. Comp 287TKR-6 cam (259 264 @.050 .645 .630 106 lsa, numbers are with 1.6 rockers

A little radical but the power is there. Should be good for an easy 10, no?

Cool article

I was thinking about something similar for my build.

I decided to keep the blower so it will be a nice running.

That and I can crank the boost up later if I want.

For go fast trailer cars, thats a middle of the road solid roller cam in aggressiveness, but for the street, I think its too rowdy.... but, to each their own.

Yes, I agree, easy 10's in a C4.... deep 10's.

Thats the nice thing about boost.... helps you stay streetable, but still make the big power. Same as cubes..... unfortunately, neither is free.

Over 600chp with a sbc 427. A very nice build.

Bowtie block with some 210 AFR comp ports, and a solid roller= killer!!

Appears it made around 490rwhp. This shows that it takes a very stout motor to crack 500rwhp.

....and with the HP still climbing on that 427 at 6500, one could go with a little smaller cam to have the HP peak out at 6300 or so rpms and have a KILLER street car with great manners. Would also bring the dynamic compression up a little. Moderate converter, mild gears......Imagine the power under the curve!

its great that they can make big numbers with a solid roller cam. pretty hard task.

Nicely done. Reads a lot like an infomercial, but interesting all the same.

I'm looking at the cams in them. I looked at them as SBC engines that make huge power but have slightly too much cam for what I'd want on the street. I'm considering swapping cams in my 383 before I install it and am looking into different options.

Yes, I would guess that would be quite radical and not really streetable in my book......but nice power.

In my opinion, thats a very nice set-up that guy has especially considering its a baby roller cam, 10.4-1 cr and it brings in over 500 ftlbs as early as 3500 rpm and makes a whopping 585 ftlbs before 5000 rpm.

If I was going to do a roller, this set-up would be on my mind...... he probably only has to adjust lash maybe twice a year, yet makes well over 600 HP. Should idle well considering the general rule is a sr will get around the same driveability of its hyd roller cousin minus 10 degrees.

Cool set-up.

i was under the impression that with a solid roller setups you get a wicked torque curve. nature of the beast?

Why?

In side by side comparisons of them vs a hyd roller, the SR typically make another 10-15 ftlbs of torque up to 5500-6000 rpm, in which then the difference grows due to float.

That is a very stout set-up.

I thought you would like that, and it only has 210 cc heads as well. That setup proves that you don't need a big cylinder head.

Why do solid roller require an adjustment every 6 months? What moves?

I run a similar sized SR cam (248/254 & 0.050", 0.670"+) in my 408CID on the street. While not for everyone, I find it to be quite streetable and makes plenty of down low (~2000 RPM) power to pull away from stationary. I do use shaft rockers, which may be helping to keep everything where it is supposed to be. The engine delivered 480+WHP in n/a form with 9.35SCR and AFR215CPs.

I have checked the lash many times, with it only needing adjustment once (actually twice if you consider after break-in, then after ~6 mos), and have had no need for adjustment in the last several years.
