I did extensive grinding on my intake & plenum, then I matched the runner openings to the manifold & plenum using gaskets as a template. I also bought the dent removal kit off ebay for the runners, it smooths them out and opens them up just a tad. I don't have any pics but I must have done something right, the car runs like a raped ape. You have to be REAL careful using a die grinder and carbide burr on aluminum, it works real fast.

I was thinking of buying an intake manifold and giving it a try, but its so inexpensive to have a pro do it (an intake manifold that is) I am not sure if its worth the trouble.

Problem is knowing what to buy, how to use it and too many hours to learn. Unless youre obsessed with learning its cheaper to pay someone.

If you really want to learn, go to a rebuild shop or yard and find a set of junker heads.

But the newer CNC'd castings are so much better than the older stuff. By the time you add up the cost of rebuilding, you're better off with the new stuff.

I've read a few web pages about doing this yourself.

They seem to say that matching ports is not too difficult. Opening the entire port up is MUCH more difficult - keeping flow identical in each port.

I personally think the more expensive the head or intake the less you want to mess with it. Some stock casting with rough cut machining in the pocket area is one thing to smooth out the rough edges. But to try to improve on state of the art cnc high dollar heads is asking for problems. Blending intake ports is much easier than reworking high dollar heads. The closer to the valve you get, the more important it gets.

Thanks Jim. I agree about not grinding on new (expecially CNC stuff). Ive done it and had decent results but it is extremely risky, most times you go backwards for any little gain or worse yet put a hole in something. BTDT.
