I heard the refineries cut back on gas production in order to raise demand, and thus prices.

And there are tankers being held out at sea to further increase demand.

Even if the gas isn't worth more, your money IS worth less.

Price of [anything] is no longer based on cost; it's based on how much the payer has to spend on it.

Healthcare? Not based on cost, but how much the payer has. Healthcare bills get paid by insurance companies, or by the Fed. Both have deep pockets, so the cost always goes up.

Acme carpet cleaners? Mr. Acme charges more when he gets a job for a government facility, cause the government [agency] has more.

Education? College costs are through the roof. Know why? Guess who pays? Rich mom and dad, or the gov't, by low interest loans.

Gas? Who knows. If it's movin' through the pumps, they raise the price, and keep on raisin' it till it slows down (I think they lowered gas last fall to show one 'losing' quarter for the year, and tax benefits). Ever notice diesel always used to be lower than gas? Uh huh... Know why it's higher now? And why it will never go lower than gas again? Who buys diesel? Workers do. We might drive our vettes a little less joyridin', but work, freight, grocery movin' will never stop. Workers have deep (steady income) pockets.

I couldn't imagine bein' a freshman economics major nowadays. Or teacher, for that matter...

Why, if you are in the government or work for the oil company, you don't have to understand economics. You just make it up as you go along. That's what I'd tell my students
