I added this around Christmas time. It gives a nice custom look without looking overdone. Great craftsmanship!
Here's where you can get one. They are a little pricey but they are well worth the look. 1968 - 1977 http://stores.mustalgia.com/Categories.bok?category=C3+CORVETTE Curtis1974 |

They aren't giving them away, but it sure looks like a quality piece.

It looks even better in person, and it only took 5 minutes to install. WELL worth the money.

I agree, it's an external finishing touch. I can't really think of anything else than can be done to the exterior with the exception of new tires, which always changes the way a car sits and looks. |

Yeah, once we get the new steering box put in I was thinking of some Goodyear F1's. Those should keep it on the ground! |

That's really nice.
Unfortunately, I don't think it would look right surrounded by my luggage rack. I actually just replaced my stock lid with a smooth one (no emblem). Never did care for the starburst emblem, and mine showed 30+ years of wear. |

I've never seen one on a car with the rack. You're right, it probably wouldn't look right.

I've always liked them, nostalgic.
I have to ask though, is there a valve under the cap to prevent leakage in an accident? |

Actually it replaces the stock hinge ring and lid, meaning the tank is untouched, and the stock fuel cap still threads on and keeps the fuel in the tank. The stock fuel cap still fits through the opening of the new lid so it can come out for refueling. |

Then, it's very cool. If it was by itself, it would be very scarey. The origionals were outlawed many years ago for racing. |

I put gas in it the first time the other day since installing it and it was a breeze. In fact, before was always tough because it was easy to splash. With the taller neck this dosen't happen. |

Then, it's very cool. I think some bolted right to the tank to replace the fuel door and the threaded on cap. It was a simple pop top and fill. This one has a very tight spring loaded rubber seal so if it was designed to it would keep fuel in the tank. Luckily though it has the much cleaner design to replace the hinge ring and it sits flush with the deck and looks awesome. |

Yep, those ( on the origional racecars ) killed some drivers. It didn't take a massive hit to pop them. |

It appears to me the cap illustrated mounts with a backing ring that sandwiches the fiberglass deck between it and the cap portion. There is no picture of what is under the cap and body.
A member who had a Lemans style cap told me that there was an extended filler neck for 63 Corvettes. This extension had a screw flange on both sides and raised the filler about 3 inches. They were priced around $100. At one time I saw them in a parts catalog, but are no longer listed. He said in mounting his, he used one of these to screw his Lemans cap to. A finish seal was made from some kind of foam or rubber material. It looked very good, but I don't have a picture. The price has always kept me from adding one, but think they look great on C-3 cars. |

I never really liked them at first either but I think it really depends on the car and the style. The ones I had seen were very tall and looked out of place on most street cars. In Curt's case this lid is flawless in it's design, it's not too tall, it installs clean, and it matches everything about his car. The flange at the base of the lid simple sits on top of the lip under the deck surface that the stock hinge ring sits on. There are four stock screws that hold that ring in place. Installation was a simple matter of removing those four screws with a stubby screwdriver and removing the ring and lid together. Then the new lid sits on that lip...not sandwiching anything at all, and the four supplied screws go in the same way the old ones came out, to hold it in place just like the ring. The flange sits on the lip, sitting flush with the top of the deck. The finger depression is the only bad part, and even that doesn't look bad at all. The more I saw them on certain cars I really liked them more and more. I know it wouldn't look good on my particular Vette but for Curt it was perfect. |
