Hi,
Bit of background, have owned a '86 z51 coupe last 15 years, recently the intake manifold started leaking, so I started taking it apart to replace it and "while I was in there" you know the story. Anyway this is what I am planning HSR intake Ported 113's 1.6 Roller rockers 1 3/4 LT's 2800 stall 3.07 rear Have not pulled the engine yet so not sure what the bottom end looks like but its done 120k miles so may need a bit of work. I was looking at the one of the cams below, would they suit, its mainly street car (not DD anymore) with odd run down the strip http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=88&sb=2 http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=22&sb=2 Thanks |

In my opinion, no. They can work, but both are huge.
If it were my car, I would look for the following: Int duration @ .050 224 Exhaust duration @ .050 230 Intake lift .550 with the 1.6 rockers Exhaust lift .550 with the 1.6 rockers Lobe seperation 112 I would not go flat tappet cam, and would do a roller conversion. In my opinion, flat tappet cams should be obsolete. Without zinc in the oils, the risk of break in failure is not worth it. |

I agree those cams are pretty healthy for a 350 street car, if it were me I'd wait and see what I'm doing w/the bottom end, and what the heads end up at w/numbers. At that point (depending on rebuild cost of original short block)you may want to consider that crate 383's go for reasonble money these days.

I wouldn't thrown $$$ at those 113's
There's a ton of CNC'ed heads on the market nowadays that will outflow what you can get out of them. |

I agree with the cam recommendations. Plus you will get more from headers in the rpm range you will be using with 1 5/8" primary tube headers rather than the 1 3/4" you mentioned.

I ran an XFI 280 in my 350 for awhile and liked it. It's a little more along the lines of the cams you posted, but not quite as aggressive.
230/236 .571/.565 113 LSA You'll have to work on the guides of a stock 113 head to keep from pushing the valve retainer into the head, but if you are machining the heads anyway it's not too big of a deal. |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the response, I am in Australia so options are more limited than US and generally more expensive. I did think about replacing the heads but seemed to get expensive real quick, same with the roller cam conversion. Re the headers I have only seen 1 3/4" listed here (car is converted to right hand drive) but will have another look. Hopefully I will get the engine out in the next couple of weeks and see what its like. Josh, what was your setup when you ran the XFI 280 ? |
