RestoMod57 Dana 36 Clutch Packs - where are they sold?

Tore apart my differential and although the clutch packs don't look overly worn, I thought it would be a good idea to put new in there. Anybody know where these are sold?

I've tried several online places but they don't carry D36 parts. Any help is appreciated.

Summitt Racing. But a few years ago when I ordered D36 shims they kept sending me D44 shims, so be carefull in dealing with them.

My second search of Summit was a bust. It makes sense too after I spoke last week with several national suppliers of ring and pinions. They all said the Dana 36 is becoming a dinosaur and manufacturers are either not making parts for D36, or are severely cutting back production runs.

Long story short, Summit does not have clutch packs or spider gear packages for the D36. Be afraid, be very afraid...

I would start by checking with Dana (Spicer) parts distributors. My older books show the clutch pack (disc kit) as Spicer part number 706876X. I doubt that part number has any other application. Many American made 4X4s have Spicer (Dana) axles. People specializing in 4X4s and off roading constantly deal in Spicer (Dana) parts. However, I doubt there is crossover from the trucks to Corvettes. You may be stuck with dealing with one of the Corvette specialists. Good luck.

Surprisingly ,unlike the unique Vette 85-96 D44-HD posi, it appears the D36 -ICA has some interchange .

Fits Dana 35, Dana 28 TTB, Dana 36 ICA, & Chrysler 8.25" REAR JEEP WRANGLER YJ TJ, CHEROKEE XJ, GRAND CHEROKEE ZJ WJ, FORD EXPLORER & RANGER M35 IFS FRONT, SOME AMC EAGLE REAR, CORVETTE W/ DANA 36,

Great info. Obviously I was wrong about the interchange. I suspected the possibility, but I couldn't find it in my Dana books. My part number came from a Spicer axle parts book for Chevy/GM applications. The part number I came up with is a slightly bigger kit than yours. I suspect your part number is the more common and popularly serviced item. Can I ask where you got the part number? Thanks.

All three sources have the same part number: 706962X. I bought from Just Differentials for $60 + shipping. I'll let you know how they compare to my removed stock packs. Thanks again

This is also a good thread with great info....

Mods, when this one plays out, merge it with the Dana36 Guru thread and make it a sticky or an archive...

I don't question that part number is correct. Spicer has (used to at least) a habit of assigning more part numbers than necessary, and at times you had to guess how the buy the item. Based on your experience and the linked web sites, I have no doubt 706962X is the kit that services the D36 clutch pack. With out searching, as vetteoz did, it is hard to know if the part number in the book is the number serviced. Both numbers show in my kit breakdown book. Those will be the correct parts.

Maybe not; at least one site I have seen mentions a 1st design and 2nd design D36 -ICA but gives no detail of the differences.
It would appear that if you do the research, D36 owners can get parts from non Vette sources.

The D44-HD (Vette and Viper )is a one off apparently; was hoping for some interchange also.
D44 crownwheel , D44 pinion with D60 yoke spline
Trac Lok posi carrier 1/4" shorter than regular D44 carrier.
The Spicer 707018X clutches are listed as only fitting a D44-HD

Good pdf file of Spicer part #'s for D44-HD parts here
http://www.rsgear.com/catalogs/Diff/Dana_GM44_2.pdf
Make sure you are looking at the C4 stuff/C3 D44 shown does not interchange in a lot of cases.

No need to shop at the "Vette only" store; any quality diff place should be able to source them from Spicer.

I received the clutch packs from JT's late yesterday. They are dead nuts on. The only difference is the plate retainers (pictured, stock on left). The new ones are longer but the retaining clips are the same dimension as the stockers.

Another interesting thing is the part numbers. JT's website has 706962X. My invoice shows 707165X. And the package for the new packs has 701046X.

I called JT's and spoke with a guy who didn't have a clue why the part numbers are different. He said, "we just know them because they fit D35-ICA and other differentials". I asked him if JT's uses any interchange guide from Spicer, and he didn't know.

Just FYI...

Not only that......Why are so many ready to "swap out" whole components??( i.e. whole transmissions, whole headlight motors.....etc.) When did we turn into such a disposable society?? Fixing the part.....actually fixing the damn thing is so much cheaper and so much more satisfying.

A used D36 is ~$500 and a D44 is ~$1000. I "fixed" mine for $168......'nuff said
